今週末のレッスン内容–ホームステイ
Hi again. Today I want to talk a little about what I will be teaching this weekend in Akasaka.
The topic for our classes this week is “Homestay” and with 2 of my students heading off to Canada for a year this summer, the timing couldn’t be better.
What will be focusing on mainly, especially in the level 1 and 2 classes, will be how to ask permission and also how to respond politely to a request in both the affirmative and the negative.
Level 1
Can I use the computer? コンピューターを使っていいですか？
May I use the computer? コンピューターを使っても宜しいですか？
Is it okay if I use the computer? コンピューターを使っても大丈夫ですか？
Of course. もちろん。
Sure. もちろん。／どうぞ。
No problem. 問題ないです。
Go ahead. どうぞ。
Sorry, not just now. すみません、今はちょっと。
Can you do it later (please)? 後でしてもらえませんか？
For level 2 we will of course, be starting of with a discussion as usual and then more of the same from level one but will be introducing the use of “ Would you mind if I … plus past tense to form a question.
Level 2
Have you ever done a homestay? 今までにホームステイをしたことはありますか？
What were some of the good and bad points? いい面と悪い面はなんでしたか。
What do you think some of the good and bad points might be? いい面と悪い面はなんだと思いますか。
What did you worry about before going? 行く前に心配だったことは何ですか。
What would you worry about before going? 行く前に心配なことはなんだと思いますか。
Would you open up your home for travelers from overseas? 海外からの旅行者にあなたの家を提供したいと思いますか。
Could I use the computer please? コンピューターを使わせてもらえませんか？
May I use the computer please? コンピューターを使っても宜しいですか？
Would you mind if I used the computer? コンピューターを使わせていただいても構いませんか？
Not at all. 構いませんよ。

And finally, for level 3, we will be going into a much deeper discussion on the merits and demerits of home stays and we will be using negative interrogatives to ask questions.

Why do you think homestays are so popular amongst Japanese travelers? ホームステイが日本の旅行者にとても人気なのはなぜだと思いますか。
Have you ever experienced a homestay in another country? 外国にホームスティの経験がありますか。
What were some of the best and worst things about it ? いい面と悪い面はなんでしたか。
What do you think some of the advantages and disadvantages may be? メリットとデメリットはなんだと思いますか。
What were your concerns before going? 行く前の心配事はなんでしたか。
What would your biggest worries be if you were going to do a homestay? ホームスティに行くとしたら、何が一番の心配事と思いますか。
Can you imagine any culture differences that may cause problems between a host family and a foreign visitor? ホストファミリーと外国人客の間で文化の違いによる問題が起こることを想像できますか。

主な内容は、許可を得る方法とどのようなリクエストにも丁寧に答える方法です。
Level 1

レベル２はもちろんいつも通りディスカッションから始まり、レベル１と似ていますが、“ Would you mind if I …”や過去形を使って質問をしていきましょう。
