This weekend in the Akasaka and in the Yakuin classrooms we will be talking about World Heritage sites. Most of our students are interested in travelling and this is a fantastic change to share our travelling experiences and recommend some great places to our fellow students!
This is how our classes will unfold this week
Level 1:
We’ll start with some general conversation about travelling
Do you like travelling? 旅行は好きですか？
Which countries have you been to? どの国に行ったことがありますか？
I’ve been to Thailand, Korea and China. タイ、韓国、中国に行ったことがあります。
Which is your favourite country and why? どの国が一番好きですか？なぜですか？
Then we will use want to to talk about which world heritage sites we want to go to in the future.
Which world heritage sites do you want to go to? どの世界遺産を訪れたいですか？
I want to go to the Taj Mahal. タージマハールに行きたいです。
Do you want to go to the Grand Canyon? グランドキャニオンに行きたいですか？
Yes, I really want to go there. はい、本当に行きたいです。
No, I don’t really want to go there. いいえ、あまり行きたくありません。
We’ll also answer why or why don’t we want to go somewhere with
It looks really beautiful. とても美しそうです。
I’m not really interested in it. あまり興味がありません。
Then we will use the present perfect and past tense to talk about which world heritage sites we have been to up to now and ask and answer follow up questions
Which world heritage sites have you been to? どの世界遺産を訪れたことがありますか？
I’ve been to the Pyramids in Egypt and to the Statue of Liberty. エジプトのピラミッドと、自由の女神を訪れたことがあります。
Have you ever been to the Forbidden Palace? 紫禁城(しきんじょう)に行ったことがありますか？
No, I’ve never been there. いいえ、一度もありません。
Yes, I’ve been there. はい、行ったことがあります。
When did you go there? いつ行きましたか？
How long did you stay there? そこにどのくらい滞在しましたか。
We’ll also practice how to answer the how was it question as in
How was it? どうでしたか？
It was really nice. How about you? Have you ever been there? とてもよかったですよ。あなたはどうですか？行ったことはありますか？
It was great. すてきでした。
It was OK. まあまあでした。
It was terrible. ひどかったです。
and finally talk about specific world heritage sites in Japan.
Level 2
The Level 2 class is similar to Level 1 with slightly more advanced grammar and vocabulary but as always students have much more freedom with the conversation and are expected to continue it for longer. Also at the end of the class, students will do a role play about Japanese world heritage sites with one student assuming the role of a foreign visitor and the other giving him travel recommendations.
Level 3
In the level 3 class in addition to talking generally about travelling to world heritages sites we’ll also learn some good adjectives to use when describing them such as:
picturesque 絵のように美しい
bustling にぎやかな
captivating 魅惑的な、心をとらえるような
rustic ひなびた
ancient 古代の、古色蒼然とした
charming(for a place) (場所が)素晴らしい、魅力的な
cosmopolitan 国際的な、洗練された
touristy (通例悪い意味で)観光客の、旅行者向けの、観光地化された
The level 3 class will also end with some pair role plays.

Level2はLevel1と似ていますが、少し難しい文法と単語を使っていきましょう。しかし大事なことはいかに自由に会話を長く続けることです。そしてレッスンの最後は生徒さまが観光客と案内係になり、生徒様同士でのロールプレイをしましょう。
Level 3
Level3では世界遺産の話に加え、次のような形容詞も使っていきましょう。
