英語を勉強する方法。- How to be a more fluent speaker – 3) Emphasizing the most important words in an English sentence and using pausing as part of your speech.

Today I would like to talk about two things that you can do to sound more natural when speaking English.

1)Emphasizing the correct words in the sentence

2)Pausing between phrases

If you want to sound natural in English you’ve got to emphasize what you think the most important words in the sentence are. Also pausing very shortly at the correct place is a very good way to command attention from your listener.

For example the sentence “I think Kensington is the best school in Fukuoka because it maximizes our students speaking time and thus speeds up their conversation improvement.” Should sound more like

“I think Kensington is the (Pause) BEST school in Fukuoka because it (Pause) MAXIMISES our students SPEAKING TIME and thus (Pause) SPEEDS UP their CONVERSATIONAL IMPROVEMENT.” The word in Caps should be spoken with extra stress and when there is a (Pause) we should pause for about half a second to build up anticipation from the listener.

今日は、英語を話すときにもっと発音がよくなるように２つのことをお話します。

1)文中の大事な言葉を強調する

2)単語間の間隔を空ける

もし、あなたがもっと英語を自然に発音できるようになりたいなら、その文章の中であなたが思う一番大事な言葉を、強調していうことです。そして適切な場所でとても短く間を空けることは、聞いてる人の注意を引くにはとてもいい方法です。

例えば、

“I think Kensington is the best school in Fukuoka because it maximizes our students speaking time and thus speeds up their conversation improvement.”

と言いたいときは、

大文字の箇所はより強調し、(Pause)のところは少し間を空ける事で聞いている人の期待を膨らませます。
