Hi Everyone, this weekend’s lessons in Yakuin and Akasaka will be about stereotypes, here are some of the things we will be covering in the lessons.
Level 1
America- American, Britain- British, and so on.
Then we will go over some adjectives to describe people.

We will talk about stereotypes of people from other countries and whether we agree on if they are true or not.
What are some Japanese stereotypes? 日本人のステレオタイプは何ですか。
I think Japanese people are hardworking. 日本人は勤勉だと思います。
Do you think so? そう思いますか。
Yes, I really think so はい、とてもそう思います。
Yes, I think so. はい、そう思います。
No, I don’t really think so.. いいえ、あまりそう思いません。
No, I don’t think so. いいえ、そう思いません。
We will talk about our ideas of people in other countries or what we have heard to be true and we will also talk about some typical stereotypes of men and women.
I’ve heard French people are stylish. フランス人はスタイリッシュと聞いたことあります。
I think that Australians love doing sports. オーストラリア人はスポーツをするのが好きだと思います。
I’ve heard Americans love fast food. アメリカ人はファーストフードがすきと聞いたことがあります。
I think Italians love sports cars. イタリア人はスポーツカーが好きだと思います。
I think women are romantic. 女性はロマンティックだと思います。
I think men are good at doing sports. 男性はスポーツが得意だと思います。
Level 2
We will start off with some general conversation on stereotypes
What do you think are some stereotypes about Japan? 日本についてのステレオタイプはなんだと思いますか。
Do you think they are accurate? それらは正確だと思いますか。
What are some strong stereotypes about other countries? 他の国についての説得力のあるステレオタイプは何ですか。
Have you ever found a stereotype to be true? ステレオタイプは本当だと感じたことがありますか。
Have you ever found a stereotype to be wrong? ステレオタイプは間違えていると感じたことがありますか。
Why do we have stereotypes? なぜステレオタイプがあるのですか。
The same as in level 1 we will use some adjectives to describe people but the vocabulary will be a little tougher.

Next we will move on to talk about what stereotypes we have heard about. We will use “they say..” and “It is said that…” to show how to talk about general beliefs without specifying where the idea comes from. Then we will discuss how much we agree with those ideas.
French people are said to be romantic. フランス人はロマンティックと言われています。
They say German people are serious. ドイツ人はまじめだと言われています。
I think that’s generally true. それは一般的に本当だと思います。
I think that’s often true. それは大抵本当だと思います。
I think that’s not exactly true. それは必ずしも本当だとは思いません。
I think that’s generally untrue. それは一般的に本当ではないと思います。
I’ve heard the Australians love doing sports. オーストラリア人はスポーツするのが好きだと聞きました。
The Americans are said to love fast food. アメリカ人はファーストフードが好きだといわれています。
I’ve heard the Italians love sports cars. イタリア人はスポーツカーが好きだと聞きました。
Finally, we will talk about some stereotypes of men and women and show you how to compare personalities and abilities.
I think women are more romantic than men. 女性は男性よりロマンティックだと思います。
I think men are better at doing sports than women. 男性は女性よりもスポーツが得意だと思います。
Level 3
Level 3 will be very similar in structure to level 2 but we will be doing a lot more free conversation based on these questions.
What do you think are some stereotypes about Japan? 日本のステレオタイプはなんだと思いますか。
How accurate do you think they are? それはどのくらい正確だと思いますか。
Have you ever found a stereotype to be on the mark? ステレオタイプは的を得ていると感じたことがありますか。
Have you ever found a stereotype to be off the mark? ステレオタイプは的を得ていないと感じたことがありますか。
When do you think we start to form stereotypes? ステレオタイプはいつから存在し始めたと思いますか。
Where do you think we get our stereotypes from? ステレオタイプはどこからきたと思いますか。
Do you think it’s possible for a country or race to get rid of its stereotypical image? 国や人種がステレオタイプのイメージを切り捨てることが可能だと思いますか。
What is your image of a stereotypical man? あなたの想像する型どおりの男性像は何ですか。Do you think the stereotypes of men and women are changing? 型どおりの男性・女性は変化していると思いますか。
Do you agree that men make better chefs than women? 男性は女性より料理上手だということに賛成ですか。
Do you think it’s true that women make better homemakers than men? 専業主婦には男性より女性が向いていると言うのが本当だと思いますか。
Again, in level 3 we will be talking about stereotypes that are believed to or thought to be true and how much we agree with that.
he Americans are believed to be somewhat arrogant. アメリカ人は多少傲慢だと信じられています。
Would you say that is true? それは正解だといえますか。
The French are known for being extremely stylish. フランス人は極めてスタイリッシュで知られています。
On the whole, I’d say that isn’t true. 全体として、それは正解とは言えません。
I’d say that is partly true. 部分的には正解と言えます。
No, I wouldn’t really say that. いいえ、そうとはとても言えません。
Yes, I’d say that is quite true. はい、結構正解だといえます。
We will also be talking about your own experiences and expectations of foreign countries, whether you thought they were true or not and how you felt when you realised you had been right all along or terribly mistaken.
When I went to Scotland, I found that they actually all were heavy drinkers. スコットランドに行ったとき、皆大酒飲みだと感じました。
I went to the U.S last year and I was surprised to find that they don’t all love fast food. 去年アメリカに行ったとき、彼らがみんなファーストフード好きではないと感じて驚きました。
Just as I thought… 案の定
I was disappointed to find that.. それを知って残念でした。
It shocked me to learn that… それを学んでショックでした。
