How to study English – Don’t be a perfectionist

Hello everyone, Two weeks ago I wrote how we need to be smart about what vocabulary we choose to learn when studying a foreign language (in this case English). The reason for that is that we all live pretty busy lifestyles and maybe have somewhat limited time to spend on language learning.

I have encountered students that have tried to learn every single word and understand every single grammar in an article or in a textbook. My advice to that (as to any other part of life) is: “Don’t be a perfectionist, don’t try and learn and understand 100%.” The amount of effort required to do that in not worth the results.

Your goal as a student is not to become a native speaker of English, that is a very very hard task. It’s an almost impossible task. Your goal is to effectively communicate your thoughts and opinions and to understand others at different degrees depending on your level and hopefully one day become fluent in English.

Becoming fluent and becoming a native speaker are two very different things. Be smart, be efficient, don’t be a perfectionist.

みなさんこんにちは。2週間前、外国語を学ぶとき(この場合は英語)にはどの語彙を勉強するか、きちんと選ぶことが大事だということをブログで書きました。私たちは本当に忙しい毎日を送っていて、言語を勉強する時間は限られているからです。

私は、全ての単語を一つずつ覚えようとしたり、記事やテキスト内の全ての文法を理解しようとしている生徒さんに会ったことがありますが、私のアドバイスは(人生のあらゆる場面において言えますが)「完璧主義者にならないで。100%理解しようとしないで」ということです。努力した全てのことが結果に結びつく訳ではありません。

英語を学ぶみなさんのゴールは、ネイティブスピーカーになることではありません。それはとっても難しいことですし、ほぼ不可能に近いことです。みなさんのゴールは、自分が思うように自分の意見を言えたり、人の言っていることを理解できたり、今のあなたのレベルに合った効果的なコミュニケーションを取れるようになることです。そして、ゆくゆくは流暢に英語を話せるようになるよう努力することです。

英語を流暢に話せたり、ネイティブ並みになるのはどちらも本当に難しいことです。賢く、効率良く。完璧主義者にはならないで。
