英語の勉強法-Baked Eyeballs

Hello everyone, today we are going to talk about baked eyeballs. If you haven’t guessed already, what we are really talking about here is fried eggs, one of my younger students, trying his very best not to speak Japanese in class last week, told me that his favourite thing to eat for breakfast is baked eyeballs.

This is quite a common thing to do, I’ve done it myself, we always try to directly translate words from our own language into the one we are trying to learn especially at the early stages when we don’t really have any other choice. As you can see this can lead to some very confusing, or as in this case, rather amusing mistakes.

So, my advice for today is simply, don’t do that. Looking for a new word , writing it down and memorising it in a sentence is a very important part of learning a new language. I know that we don’t always have time in a conversation to look up every word, but it is better for your studies to try and explain what you mean using whatever words you can to get your point across than directly translating from your own language. The reason for this is that you have to practice the things you already know and it is much more satisfying when you get your point across without relying on your own language to do so.

So my advice is simple, if in doubt, check it out, and don’t directly translate from Japanese to English.

みなさんこんにちは、今日はbaked eyeballsについてお話しします。すでになんのことを言っているのか分からない人、これは目玉焼きのことです。私の若い生徒さんの一人は、先週のレッスンで日本語を使わないようとっても努力していたのですが、彼は朝食のとき、 baked eyeballsを食べるのが好きだといいました。

これは誰でもやってしまうことですよね、私もそうでした。私たちは他に選択肢がない時、学ぼうとしている言葉を早い段階で自分の第一言語から直訳してしまいます。ご覧の通り、これは混乱を招いてしまいます。まあこの場合はおもしろい間違いですが。

ですので私の今日のアドバイスはシンプルです。直訳をやめてください。新しい単語を探して、書き留めてください。そしてそれを覚えてください。新しい単語を学ぶとき、文節で覚えることはとても大事なことです。会話の途中でいつでも単語を調べられるわけではないのは分かっていますが、トライしてみることのほうがあなたの勉強にとって良いことです。そして、あなたの第一言語から直訳するよりも、何でもいいのであなたの言いたいことを表せる言葉を使って説明してみてください。

理由は、すでに知っている単語を練習することは、自分の言語に頼らずに表現できたときに断然自分の自信になるからです。

ということで、私のアドバイスはシンプルです。不確かなら調べること。日本語から英語に直訳しないこと。
