How to study English – How to be a more fluent speaker – 1) Make mistakes

Jaimie talked about the importance of making mistakes in his blog before and I’d like to talk a little bit more about it. I have noticed sometimes our students hesitate when speaking, trying to make sure that they use the correct grammatical form. Sometimes students say a sentence that was indeed correct but suddenly pause and try and make sure that he or she wasn’t making a mistake.

At Kensington as you have seen teachers usually circulate the classroom while our students talk in pairs guide the conversation, help out with questions and finally point out any grammar or vocab mistakes to students. This is our job and it is very important for us to weed out possible bad English habits from our students. But from our students’ perspective, if you want to become a more fluent speaker, you shouldn’t mind making grammar mistakes sometimes. Focus on speaking with confidence and without thinking too much instead. Fluent English is about communicating effectively and will usually involve making mistakes too.

Being fluent in a language does not mean being perfect at it. I’m pretty sure all of our students are fluent in Japanese but that doesn’t mean that sometimes you don’t make mistakes when speaking it even if it’s your native language.

So instead of overthinking and pausing, focus on conversation flow, speaking continually with confidence without stops!!

以前のブログで、Jaimieがミスをすることが大事だと話していましたが、もう少し詳しく話したいと思います。気づいたのですが、私の生徒さんはたまに話すことにためらい、正しい文法が使えているか確認しようとします。時々、生徒さんは完璧に話しているのに、突然立ち止まり、間違えてなかったかを確認しようとします。

ケンジントンの先生たちは、みなさんも見た事があるように、いつも教室を動き回って、ペアで会話ができるようサポートしたり疑問に答えたり、文法や語彙の間違いを指摘したりしています。これはわたしたちの仕事で、生徒さんたちの英語の悪いクセを取り除くためにとても重要なことなのです。でも生徒さんの視点で言うと、もしもっと流暢に話せるようになりたいのなら文法の間違いは気にしないことです。色々考えすぎずに自信を持って話す事にフォーカスしてください。

スラスラと話すことは効果的なコミュニケーションを生みますし、ミスをすることに繋がります。流暢に言葉を話すことが完璧なことではありません。もちろん生徒さんたちは流暢に日本語を話すと思いますが、誰でも第一言語でさえ、ミスをしないというわけではないですよね。だから、考えすぎたり何も言えなくなるのではなく、会話にフォーカスし、止まる事なく自信を持って話しましょう！
