Monday Business – Cultural fit

Today I’m going to introduce you to a Business English expression that is very important for us here in Kensington. It’s “cultural fit” and it’s a bit difficult to explain but it basically means that employees’ beliefs and behaviors are in alignment with their employer’s core values and company culture.

For example, when we started our school and were interviewing teachers we met a teacher that said that she didn’t want to work Mondays cause she liked long weekends. She was a lovely person but Jaimie and I at that time had one day off every two weeks (or more) so she obviously wasn’t the person we were looking for. She wasn’t a cultural fit.

今日は、ケンジントンで私たちにとってとても重要なビジネス英語表現を紹介します。それは“cultural fit”です。ちょっと説明するのが難しいですが、基本的な意味は、従業員の信念や行いは、雇い主の本質的価値や会社の文化と合致していなければならないということです。

例えば、わたしたちが教室をスタートさせて講師の面接をしていたとき、「月曜日は働きたくない、なぜなら長い週末が好きだから」と言った女性がいました。彼女はとてもいい人でしたが、Jaimieと私はその頃2週間に1日(もっとかもしれません)しか休みがなかったので、彼女は明らかにわたしたちが探している人材ではありませんでした。彼女とは信念が一致しなかったのです。
