How to study- Past tense versus present perfect
Hi there everyone.
Today I’m going to show you a bit of grammar that seems to trouble everyone and that is when to use the past tense and when to use the present perfect.
We use the past tense to talk about a specific time in the past.
Example.
I finished reading the book you lent me yesterday.
I went to Paris last year.
We use the present perfect to talk about something we have done in the past but we don’t give a specific time.
Example
I’ve finished reading the book you lent me.
I’ve been to Paris.
What I often hear from my students is sentences like this one…
I’ve been to Paris last year. X
This is a mistake because you are giving a specific time frame with the present perfect.

今日は、みなさんにとってちょっと難しいなと思っている文法、過去形を使う場合と現在完了形を使う場合について話そうと思います。
過去形は、過去の特定の時間について話す時に使います。
例えば、
昨日、君が貸してくれた本を読み終えたよ。
私は、去年パリに行きました。
現在完了形は、過去の事だけど、時間を特定しないことについて話す時に使います。
例えば、
君が貸してくれた本を読み終えたよ。
私は、パリに行ったことがあります。
生徒さんが話すのを聞いていると、次のように話したりしています。
I’ve been to Paris last year. X
これは、現在完了形で時間の特定をしているので間違った使い方になります。
