日本人が間違えやすい英語 Play
Hello everyone and happy Friday!
Since it is Friday I’m sure all you sociable party animals have plans to play with your friends right?
Wrong!
This is a common mistake that my students make but it’s easily fixed. If you directly translate the word 遊ぶ from Japanese into English it certainly is play but in English the word play is generally reserved for little kids so when you say you played with your friends it comes across as a bit too cute.
Adults will
spend time with friends
meet up with friends
hang out with friends
go out with friends
go drinking, clubbing, with friends
and many many more things of course but the important thing to remember is that we don’t use the verb play with adults.

みなさんこんにちは！金曜日おめでとう！
金曜日ですから、付き合いの良いパーティー好きな皆さんにはきっと友だちと遊ぶ計画があること間違いなしですよね？
・・・いいえ実は、間違いあり、です！
私の生徒さんたちがふつうにやってしまう間違いがここに潜んでいるのですが、でも簡単に直せます。日本語の「遊ぶ」を英語に直訳すると確かに “play” なのですが、英語で “play” はだいたい小さなお子様限定です。ですから皆さんが “played with your friends（おトモダチとお遊びした）”というと、ちょっと可愛すぎてしまいます。
大人でしたら
spend time with friends（友達と過ごす）
meet up with friends（友達と会う）
hang out with friends（友達とぷらぷらする）
go out with friends （友達と出かける）
go drinking, clubbing, with friends（友達と飲みに／クラブに行く）
などもちろん他にももっともっといろいろありますが、大切なのは大人に対して “play” という動詞を使わないということを覚えておいてください。
