Talk about myself/my hometown/my country
Chelmsford
I am from the city of Chelmsford. I have told this to many students and it’s often meant with understandable, visible confusion, as it is quite difficult to pronounce for students.
It must sound odd to students, and it should, because it is a little odd. Or at least the first part is. ‘Chelmsford’ is actually a mix of two words ‘Ceolmaer’ and ‘Ford’. ‘Ceolmaer’ was probably the name of an important tribal chief or king a long time ago.
The second part, ‘ford’ is a crossable part of a river not so commonly used now in English, since bridges are everywhere. But it is very common in place names in England, some people might be familiar with the city ‘Oxford’ in England, which shares half of the same meaning as my home city.
So if you see or hear of a city that ends in ‘-ford’ in England, chances are that it was near a river.
