England stereotypes
Ah England, stereotypical England. Bad food, worse teeth, and an unrelenting lack of emotion. These are some of the most common stereotypes of England. And like most stereotypes, they are false. In one study on oral hygiene, England was actually ranked 5th in the world, take that 9th-placed America!
What interests me is where did all these stereotypes come from?
Unsurprisingly, many stereotypes of various countries arose in the World Wars.
A global war meant that many people were hearing global news on a much bigger scale than ever before. Nationalism across the globe had never been higher. Rumours and propaganda flowed freely.
War rations, and the low quality of food after the war, are a big reason why many people consider English food bad. Even though now London is often regarded as one of the food capitals of the world.
‘Keep calm and carry on’ is a very famous poster from England in World War II. It might suggest a lack of emotion from the English people when read, but ironically a lot of English people at the time actually hated war posters like this one, and they were not famous at all at the time, anyway.
I always find it interesting to trace back the history of stereotypes to the source, it often reveals many misconceptions. I think some stereotypes may be true, most at least have a hint of truth to them. But all of them, I think, are largely inaccurate. I hope you found it interesting, too!

あぁ、イギリス、ステレオタイプなイギリス！
まずい食事、悪い歯並び、そして断固とした無感情。これらは一般的なイギリスのステレオタイプのいくつかです。そして多くのステレオタイプがそうであるように、これらの多くは間違っています。歯科衛生の面のある調査では、実際にはイギリスでは世界で5位、アメリカは9位にランクインしていました。
私はこれらのステレオタイプはどこからやって来たのかに興味があります。
当然のことながら、様々な国に対する固定観念が世界大戦中に生まれました。地球規模の戦争とは、多くの人々以前には聞いたことが無い位多くの規模で世界中のニュースを耳にする事を意味します。
世界中のナショナリズムは、かつてないほど高まっていました。噂とプロバガンダも自由に溢れかえっていました。
戦時中の配給や、戦後の質の悪い食事は、イギリスの食事は美味しくないと多くの人が考える大きな要因になっています。しかし現在ではロンドンはよく世界の食事のメッカとされます。
‘Keep calm and carry on’ とは第2次世界大戦中の、イギリス発のとても有名なポスターです。 これを読むと、イギリス人は無感情に思えるかもしれません、しかし、皮肉なことに、実際には多くのイギリス人はこの様な戦時中のポスターが嫌っており、当時は全く有名ではありませんでした。
私はいつもステレオタイプの歴史を元に振り返ることを楽しんでいますし、結果、誤解を解くこともあります。
いくつかのステレオタイプは真実で、少なくとも殆どは真実を知るヒントになります。しかし、それらはすべて確実では無いと私は思います。
