The Brits aren’t all that busy!

We have been talking a lot about being busy this week and it’s got me thinking again. Why is it that the Japanese seem to be so busy all the time?

Of course in Britain people work hard too and students also study hard when the time comes but we just have so much more free time and I can’t for the life of me figure out why the Japanese need to do so much work/ study and have so little free time. British kids for the most part get a good education and university levels in the UK are just as good, if not slightly higher than in Japan, so why the need for all the extra study/ cram school/ private tutoring and the like? British kids wouldn’t dream of going to school at the weekends, don’t have school in the holidays, and have never even heard of cram school, so how do they get their education with all this free time?

The same can be said for the workplace. I have worked a number of jobs in the UK and we get the work done but we have loads, and I mean loads of free time. Every weekend off and at least 5 weeks of paid holidays in a year not including public holidays. We have a couple of different sayings in Britain that pertain to this one of them is kind of my personal motto too” Work hard, play hard.” The other is “Work to live, don’t live to work”.I think I have a pretty decent work life balance since I run my own company and can take time off when needs be but I always get a bit jealous when I find my brother is on holiday again , it seem like he is never at work! I suppose I’ve just got used to working in Japan and have forgotten how much free time is important to my fellow Brits!

イギリス人はそれほど忙しくありません

今週は「忙しいこと」についてたくさん話していました。それは、私にもう一度このことを考えさせてくれました。
なぜ日本人はいつも忙しそうなのか？

もちろんイギリスでも人はしかるべき時に一生懸命働いて、学生も一生懸命勉強していますが、余暇がたくさんあるので、日本人がなぜそんなにたくさんの仕事や勉強をしなければならないのか、なぜ余暇がそんなに少ないのか、どうしても分かりません。
イギリスの子どもたちはほとんどの場合、良い教育を受けており、大学のレベルは日本よりもわずかに高くはないにしても同じくらい良いのですが、なぜ追加の勉強／塾／家庭教師などが必要なのでしょうか？
週末に学校に行くとは夢にも思わないイギリスの子どもたちは、休日には学校はなく、塾についても聞いたことがありません。
このような自由な時間がありながら、どのようにして教育を受けているのでしょうか。

職場についても同じことが言えます。
私はイギリスでいくつか仕事をしてきましたが、仕事が終わったら、たくさんの自由時間がありました。
毎週末の休みと、1年間に少なくとも5週間の有給休暇。これは祝日を除きます。
イギリスには、これに関連するいくつかのことわざがありますが、そのうちの一つは私の個人的なモットーでもあります。
「Work hard, play hard（よく働き、よく遊べ）」
もう1つは「Work to live, don’t live to work（生きるために働きなさい。働くために生きてはいけない）」です。
自分の会社を経営しているので、仕事と生活のバランスはかなり良いと思います。
必要なときに休暇を取ることができますが、私の兄弟がまたホリデーを取っているのを見つけたときはいつも少し嫉妬します。
まるで彼は決して仕事をしていないように見えるほどです！
おそらく日本で働くことに慣れたので、イギリス人の仲間にとってどれだけ自由時間が重要かを忘れてしまったんだと思います。
