Setsubun (節分) is an annual Japanese holiday that falls on the last day of winter in the old Japanese calendar. The start of spring is considered to be a time of renewal and rituals and traditions are held to drive away bad fortune for the coming year.
Traditionally on Setsubun people eat roasted soybeans for each year of your life, plus one more for the year ahead. Another tradition that is overshadowing the throwing of the beans for the past 25 years is eating ehomaki on Setsubun.

Seven Gods of Fortune
Ehomaki (恵方巻き) is a type of makizushi (sushi roll). The word “eho” (恵方) means “lucky direction” and “maki” (巻き) means roll.
Seven Gods of Fortune symbolize wealth and happiness in Japan. Ehomaki is prepared by using seven different ingredients, representing these Seven Gods of Fortune. There are no set rules on what ingredients one can use; however, anago and eel kabayaki, egg, and boiled shiitake mushrooms are popular choices.
In the early years of the Meiji Era (1868-1912), merchants in Kansai would ritually face a lucky direction and eat something without interruption to bring in good business. 7-Eleven Hiroshima cleverly spread the idea throughout Japan.
How to eat ehomaki
The most important thing about ehomaki is the unique way in which you eat it:
1. Never cut off the edges of ehomaki, or you may cut off your fortune! Eat it whole!
2. When eating your ehomaki, face in the auspicious direction (ehō) of “Toshitokujin” ( “The God of the New Year ” ). It changes every year, nevertheless is it massively publicized so it is impossible to get it wrong.
3. Eat in silence! It is believed that speaking while eating could let your luck escape.

The rising popularity of ehomaki is an undoubtedly brilliant exercise in branding. It manages to capture Japan’s robust seasonal hype machine and drive limited-time sales. Grab your ehomaki because it is just once a year! Don’t let your luck slips through your … mouth!

節分は、日本の旧暦における冬の最後の日にあたる毎年恒例の伝統行事です。
春の始まりは新しいスタートの時期と考えられ、厄除けの儀式や伝統な習慣が行われます。
昔から、節分の日には 年齢の数だけ炒った大豆を食べ、さらにもう一粒 を食べる習慣があります。
しかし、過去25年間で、この豆まきの習慣を凌ぐほど人気を集めているのが、節分に恵方巻を食べるというものです。
七福神と恵方巻
恵方巻は、巻き寿司の一種 です。
「恵方」は 「縁起の良い方向」 を意味し、「巻き」は 「巻き寿司」 を意味します。
七福神 は、日本において 富や幸福を象徴する神々 です。
恵方巻は、これらの 七福神を表す7種類の具材 を使って作られます。
具材には特に決まりはありませんが、穴子やウナギの蒲焼き、卵、しいたけ などが人気です。
明治時代の初期（1868年〜1912年） には、関西の商人たちが、商売繁盛を願って 「縁起の良い方向を向いて、無言で食べる」 という風習を行っていました。
その後、セブン-イレブン広島 がこの習慣を全国に広めました。
恵方巻の食べ方
恵方巻の最大のポイントは、独特な食べ方 にあります。
① 恵方巻を切らない。
切ることで 運が途切れる と言われているため、丸ごと食べます！
② その年の「恵方」を向いて食べる
「年徳神（としとくじん）」 （新年の神様）がいる方向を向いて食べます。
恵方は毎年変わりますが、広く告知されるので間違えることはありません。
③ 無言で食べる
食べている間に話すと、運が逃げてしまう と言われています。
