The whole is greater than the sum of its parts
Today, I’m going to introduce an expression that you may come across from time to time – ‘the whole is greater than the sum of its parts’.
The expression is attributed to the philosopher Aristotle, although it’s actually paraphrased.
This is an expression that is used when something is even better than it is expected to be when all its excellent constituent parts are combined. i.e. the combination leads to some extra magic. Another way of talking about this idea is ‘synergy’.
An excellent example of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts is a band such as The Beatles – every member was extremely talented, but the music they did together is generally considered to be much better than each member’s solo music.
That said, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts is not an expression you will come across very often, as the circumstances required are quite rare.
However, it can be used in scenarios such as the following –
