Focus on basic competency first
Hello everyone,
We many times get students from companies where a high TOEIC score is required.
Usually the target is around 800 which is according to the TOEIC administrator a level equivalent to B2 on the CEFR.
A B2 user can communicate easily and spontaneously in a clear and detailed manner. This is not yet an experienced speaker, but a B2 user is able to understand and be understood in most situations.
Many times our students though are nowhere the B2 level, sometimes they are A2 or even A1 on the CEFR. (A2 and A1 refer to only basic use of English) and are given no tools to improve their general English competency other than taking TOEIC classes.
The problem with that is that taking TOEIC classes will do very little to build up your English level if you are a very basic user of English. A very simple analogy would be trying to do high school math without knowing junior high school math. The result is of course a very likely failure to get the target score regardless of how much one tries and a lot of stress.
I would advise the companies requiring such scores to focus on building up the general fluency of their staff first and then focus on building them up to a more advanced speaker with a target of 800 in TOEIC. ケンジントン英会話には、高いTOEICのスコアが求められる企業から来られる生徒さんが多くいらっしゃいます。
通常、ターゲットはだいたい800点で、TOEICの管理者(IIBC)によると、CEFRのB2に相当するレベルです。
B2レベルの方は、明確かつ詳細な方法で、容易に、また自発的にコミュニケーションをとることができます。
まだ経験豊富な英語話者ということではありませんが、B2の方はほとんどの状況で英語の理解が可能です。
ケンジントン英会話の生徒さんはB2レベルではない方が多いです。A2またはA1の方もいます。(CEFRのA2とA1は基本的な英語のみを使える方を指します。)
そして彼らはTOEICのレッスンを受講する以外に一般的な英語能力を向上させるためのツールは与えられていません。
問題は、もしあなたが基本的な英語だけ使える方である場合、TOEICのレッスンを受講しても英語レベルを上げるのにほとんど効果がないということです。
分かりやすい例えとしては、中学校の数学を知らずに高校の数学をやろうとするようなものです。
もちろん、その結果は、どれだけトライして、多くのストレスがあっても、目標スコアを取得できない可能性が非常に高くなります。
そのようなスコアを必要とする企業様には、まずスタッフの基本的な英語の流暢さを構築することに焦点を当て、その次にTOEICで800点を目標とするより高度な英語話者になってもらうことに重きを置くことをお勧めします。
