a quick trip home

Hi there! 

Last month I had to make an unscheduled visit to the UK and even though it was a bit of a mad dash I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it (except the 13 hour layover in Helsinki airport that is).  It’s been a few years since I last went back so no big surprises for me this time.The last couple of times I felt like a complete alien in my own country because I hadn’t been back for so long.  There were a couple of things that occurred to me while I was there though. One thing that struck me was the rest of the world really seems to have moved on from covid. There are no restrictions, the number of infections doesn’t appear on the news and most of all nobody is wearing a mask anymore. On my first day back I asked my brother if I should bring one with me when we were going out and  he looked at me like I was crazy and said “What for? ” The other thing was that I am very out of practice at small talk. The Scots are a friendly bunch and due to the amount of time I have spent in Japan I’m a bit taken aback when shop staff or waiters etc strike up a conversation with me. I’m just not sure how to react! 

I had a chance to meet up with friends who I haven’t seen for a long time,some for almost twenty years actually and yes, we partied Scottish style so I was exhausted when I got back and the price of international flights right now is kind of beyond a joke but all in all it was a nice little trip. Can’t wait to go back longer next time round!

急な帰省

こんにちは！

先月、私は予定外のイギリス訪問をしなければなりませんでした。
少し気が狂ったようにバタバタでしたが、私はそれを完全に楽しんだと言わざるを得ません (ヘルシンキ空港での13時間の乗り継ぎを除いて)。
前回帰国してから数年しか経っていないので、今回は大きな驚きはありませんでした。
それまでは、私は長い間帰国していなかったので、自分の国で自分は完全に外国人かのように感じていました。
今回、私が帰省している間、私に起こったことがいくつかありました。
まず私を驚かせたのは、世界の残りの部分が本当にcovidから離れたように見えるということでした。
制限はなく、感染者数はニュースに載らず、何よりももう誰もマスクを着用していません。
帰国した初日、兄弟に出かけるときにマスクを持って行ったほうがいいかと尋ねたところ、彼はまるで私が狂ったかのように目を向けて、「何のために？」と言いました。
次に驚いたことは、私は世間話が苦手になったということです。
スコットランド人はとてもフレンドリーですが、私は日本で過ごした時間が長いため、店のスタッフやウェイターなどが私と会話を始めると少し面食らいます。
どう反応していいのか分からないのです！

長い間会っていなかった友人達と会う機会がありました。20年近く会っていない友人もいました。
そして、もちろん、スコットランド式のパーティーをしたので、戻ったときには疲れ果てていたし、それに今の国際線の料金は冗談じゃないほど高すぎます。
しかし、全体としては素敵なプチ旅行でした。
次回はもっと長く滞在するのが待ちきれません！

「worth（価値がある）」の使い方【日常英会話】

Hello there everyone! 

In this weekend’s classes we will be giving recommendations and one thing my students always seem troubled by is the phrase “worth…” . We use this phrase in both the negative and the positive to give our opinion on a range of things and it is used in combination with a verb. 

Example

“Have you seen the new Top Gun film? I can’t make up my mind whether to go and see it in the cinema or not.” 

“Yeah, I have. It was okay. Worth watching at least but I don’t think it’s worth spending the money to go and see it in the cinema. I’d wait for it to come out on Netflix if I were you.”

Hope that comes in handy.

みなさん、こんにちは！

今週末のクラスではおすすめを提案する練習をしますが、提案する際に私の生徒さんがいつも悩まされているように見えるのは、「worth（価値がある）」という言葉です。
この言葉は否定形と肯定形の両方で使うことができ、さまざまなことについて意見を述べることができます。
また、「worth」は動詞と組み合わせて使用​​されます。

[例文]

Have you seen the new Top Gun film? I can’t make up my mind whether to go and see it in the cinema or not.
(新しいトップガンの映画を見ましたか？映画館に行って見るかどうか決めかねています。)

Yeah, I have. It was okay. Worth watching at least but I don’t think it’s worth spending the money to go and see it in the cinema. I’d wait for it to come out on Netflix if I were you.
(ええ、見ましたよ。悪くなかったです。少なくとも見る価値はありますが、お金を払って映画館に行って見る価値があるとは思いません。私があなただったら、Netflixで公開されるのを待ちます。)

What we are doing in Kensington
Switching our line account

Hello there everyone! I’m pretty sure you have noticed by now but from this month we have changed our line account from our old private account to the new Line business account and hopefully we will have all of you on the new one by the end of this month. This is just an extra reminder because I know that most of you have already registered with the new account but for those of you who have not, please send us your full name to the new one when you have time because we are hoping to phase out the old one as soon as we can. The new account makes it easier for multiple staff to check at the same time and should improve our response time to your requests!

【英検準2級スピーキング対策】正しい英語フレーズを使っているか確認する

Eiken Pre-2 Speaking

Hey there everyone. We have a fair number of students preparing for Eiken pre-2 at the moment and one of the things you need to be aware of is that the speaking section takes a bit of a jump from 3 to pre-2.  You will have to describe some everyday situations in English and a lot of the verbs may  be new to you such as “lay the table” “plant a flower” “get in/ out of a car” and so on so doing a lot of practice of past tests with your teacher is probably best or going through past tests by yourself using a dictionary to make sure you are using the correct English phrase. One thing I have noticed is that younger students try to translate directly from Japanese Into English in this section and that is not the best idea because the verbs or prepositions we use are sometimes very different.

みなさん、こんにちは。
現在、かなりの数の生徒さんが英検準2級の準備をしています。
ここで注意する必要があるのは、準2級のスピーキングセクションは3級と比べて少し難易度が上がるということです。
日常のできごとを英語で説明する必要があり、「lay the table（食卓の用意をする）」「plant a flower（花を植える）」「get in / out of a car（車に乗り込む／車から降りる）」など、あなたにとって初めての動詞が多くあるかもしれません。
そのため、講師と一緒に過去のテストを練習するか、もしくは自分で過去のテストをチェックして、辞書を使いながら自分が正しい英語フレーズを使っているか確認するのがおそらく最善です。
若い生徒さんで、日本語から英語に直訳しようとしている方がいらっしゃることに気づきましたが、日本語と英語では使用する動詞や前置詞が非常に異なることがあるため、直訳はあまり良いアイデアではありません。

Phases/steps of language learning-which step are on or aiming for?

Hello there, taking it easy on Sunday? Here are steps/phases we go through when learning a language. Take a look if you’re interested and maybe check where you’re.

1. Able to speak a little and understand almost nothing

2.Understand more than you speak

3. Become conversational-can hold a conversation

4. Able to speak and listen without translating words in your native language in your mind

5. Thinking completely in the target language as you speak and listen

6. Be able to follow and participate in a conversation among a large group of native speakers- you interject and express a thought, a joke etc in the conversation from time to time.

Which step or phase are you on  and which phase are you aiming for?

My childhood pet

Hello everyone, any big plans for the weekend?  It’s time to tell you a little about myself/culture/country…
Sticking to the week’s theme “Animals and pets”, I’ll tell you about my childhood pet.
I had a pet dog when I was kid.He was a mixed breed dog, so I didn’t know exactly what breed he was.He looked like a lion, so I named him Simba. Simba means lion in Swahili.
I used to walk him and play with him in the park. He used to follow me everywhere.
I taught him some tricks. He was a very loyal dog.
One day, he got run over by a car! I was devastated!
I never had another dog.
Please tell your teacher and classmates about your childhood pet, if you had one.

今日は「私の出身地、私自身」をお話しする日なので、今週のテーマ「Animals and pets（動物とペット）」に関連して、子どもの頃のペットについてお話しします。

子どもの頃、愛犬を飼っていました。
雑種だったので正確な犬種はわかりませんでしたが、見た目がライオンに似ていたので、シンバと名付けました。
シンバとはスワヒリ語でライオンを意味します。
私は彼を散歩させたり、公園で彼と遊んだりしていました。
彼はどこにでも私を追いかけていました。
私は彼にいくつかの技を教えました。とても忠実な犬でした。
しかしある日、彼は車に轢かれました！私は途方に暮れました！
私は別の犬を飼ったことがありません。

子どもの頃にペットを飼っていた場合は、そのことを講師やクラスメートに伝えてみてくださいね。

【TOEICリスニング対策】文脈を理解する。周りの音を手がかりにする。

Understand the context

Greetings everyone, have you had time to enjoy the pleasant weather and beautiful colors of  autumn? Here’s a short tip for the TOEIC test prep-Listening section.
One of the most important things when you’re listening to a dialogue, an announcement etc, is understanding  the context. Understanding the context will help you guess the meaning of unfamiliar words or unclear parts of a sentence. How do you understand the context? The first sentence will contain keywords. And in some cases background noise may help you understand where the dialogue or announcement is taking place.
“Attention, please. Flight number 324 to Sydney Australia, will be boarding soon at  gate number A 11.
You can guess from the keywords/phrases that this is an announcement at an airport.

会話やアナウンスなどを聞いているときに最も重要なことの一つは、文脈を理解することです。
文脈を理解することで、なじみのない単語や文の不明確な部分について意味を推測しやすくなります。
文脈をどのように理解しますか？最初の文にはキーワードが含まれます。
また、場合によっては、会話やアナウンスが行われている場所を理解するのに、周りの音が役に立つ場合があります。 

Attention, please. Flight number 324 to Sydney Australia, will be boarding soon at  gate number A 11
(お知らせいたします。オーストラリア・シドニー行きのフライト324便は、まもなくゲートA11で搭乗を開始します。)

キーワードやフレーズから、空港でのアナウンスであることが推測できます。
