【ビジネス英会話】海外企業では「Discuss」と「Ensure」をよく耳にします

“Discuss” and “Ensure”

Both these words are pretty common English words, but you’ll frequently hear them in the corporate world, where language is a little less direct and generally softer.

To “Discuss an issue” means to “talk about a problem”. The former phrase is more business oriented, while the latter is a bit more casual. I use both in any context.

To “Ensure things are running smoothly” means “To make sure everything is OK”. The former is again, very business oriented, and the latter is more relaxed.

Using any of these is fine honestly, but you’ll frequently hear people use these kinds of words in business or corporate settings.

この2つの単語は、かなり一般的な英単語ですが、少し直接的でなく、一般的にソフトな言葉遣いの企業では頻繁に耳にすることができます。

Don’t Hesitate to Speak, Mistakes and All

Whenever you come to my classes, whether it’s in groups or privates, don’t ever hesitate to speak openly and with mistakes. It’s actually extremely important to make mistakes, because once we isolate them, we can correct them and improve from there.

In school, we’re often taught through tests that being wrong is “bad”, so many people are naturally hesitant to try, because they’re afraid to make a mistake and do things perfectly.

This is completely incorrect. You have to try to learn, and you will make mistakes, because mistakes = learning!

グループレッスンであろうとプライベートレッスンであろうと、私のクラスに来るときはいつでもオープンに、また間違うことをためらわずに話してください。
間違うことはとても重要です。
なぜなら間違いを見つけたら、そこから修正して改善できるからです。

学校では間違っていることは「悪いこと」であるとテストで教えられることがよくあります。
そのため、多くの人は物事を完璧に行い間違いを犯すことを恐れているため、自然に挑戦することに躊躇してしまいます。

これは完全に間違っています。
あなたは学ぼうとしなければなりません。そしてあなたは間違いを犯すでしょう。
なぜなら「間違い = 学び」だからです!

The Australian Summer Comes

From this month onward, Australia is going to get real hot, because the seasons are opposite over there – it’s summer there when it’s winter here.

This means the days will get hot, the beaches will get very busy, and the sun will burn you easily if you don’t use sunscreen. It’s also a good time to head to Australia for a holiday, but a strong warning – because of the current global issues, it’s very expensive!

If you do go however, I recommend checking out Sydney and the beaches there. It’s great at this time of year.

“Get a health check”

Health in daily conversation, especially when booking appointments, can be a bit tricky for second language learners, so here are some useful phrases if you ever need to do something health wise in English:

  • – I’d like to do some bloodwork – this is a way to say you want a blood test done.
  • – I’d like a general check up – this is just a general routine health check, includes many things!
  • – Can I get an X-ray on my ____? – This is requesting an x-ray for a specific part of your body.

There are many others, but these are some basic ones that you can use for common requests.

Fashion and Beauty

Hi Everyone,

This week’s subject is fashion and beauty, which for me is…not exactly an easy subject!

Fashion wise, I take care of myself and go for a simple, casual style – but according to many of my friends, I look great in formal wear. I really don’t like formal wear however, so I stick to my usual well fitted shirts, long sleeves, shorts, pants and dark colours, especially purple.

When it comes to beauty care, I just focus on eating good food, getting lots of sun, sleeping well and drinking a lot of water. I don’t think you need much else!

【ビジネス英会話】go on a business trip（出張に行く）の使い方

Go on a business trip

Hey guys, 

When we want to say 出張する in English we say “go on a business trip”. 

Ex. I usually have to go on business trips on the weekends. 

Ex. Last week was so busy, I went on a business trip around Kyushu. 

A variation of the expression above is “be on a business trip” and is used when someone is on a business trip at the time of speaking. 

Ex. Mr. Nakagawa is not here, he is on a business trip in Fukuoka at the moment. 

Aside from business, we can use the expression “go on a … trip” for other things as well. Ex. go on a fishing trip, go on a school trip, go on a company trip etc… Take note that “going on a business trip” and “going on a company trip” are different things.

英語で「出張する」と言いたいときは「go on a business trip」と言います。

[例文]
 I usually have to go on business trips on the weekends.
(私はたいてい週末に出張に行かなければなりません。)

Last week was so busy, I went on a business trip around Kyushu.
(先週はとても忙しかったです。出張で九州をまわってきました。)

上記の他の言い方として「be on a business trip」があります。
これは、誰かが出張中である場合に使用されます。

[例文]
Mr. Nakagawa is not here, he is on a business trip in Fukuoka at the moment.
(ナカガワさんは不在です。現在、福岡に出張中です。)

「go on a … trip」という表現はビジネス以外にも使えます。

[例]
「go on a fishing trip (釣り旅行に行く)」「go on a school trip (修学旅行に行く)」「go on a company trip (社員旅行に行く)」など

「going on a business trip (出張に行く)」と「going on a company trip (社員旅行に行く)」は別物ですのでご注意ください。

Set a time to study

Hey guys, 

I know that I’m sounding like a broken record here but the most important step you have to make during language acquisition is making time to study the language on a hopefully daily basis. That means that you need to build a studying habit and the first step in building a habit is to set a clearly defined time for it.

A good time to start any habit is first thing in the morning, for example you can leave your textbook next to your bed and give it a read after you’ve gotten up.
Another good time is on your way to work if you are using public transport, or during your lunch break.

For me personally, mornings are the best time to build any habit but that may be different for each person. What’s very important though is to have a clearly set time for your studies.

私が壊れたレコードのように何度も同じことを言っていることは分かっていますが、言語学習中に行わなければならない最も重要なステップは、言語を勉強する時間を作ることです。できれば毎日が望ましいです。
つまり、勉強の習慣を作る必要があり、習慣を作るための最初のステップは、明確に定義された時間を設定することです。

習慣を始めるのに適した時間は、朝一番です。
たとえば、教科書をベッドの横に置いておけば、起きてから読むことができます。

もう一つの良い時間は、公共交通機関で移動しているとき、または昼休み中です。

個人的には、朝が習慣を作るのに最適な時間ですが、それは人によって異なるかもしれません。
しかし、とても重要なことは、勉強の時間を明確に設定することです。

going out for lunch or dinner

Hey guys, 

Since our topic for today is “Going out”, it’s a good chance for me to talk about my going out habits. In truth I’m not so big on going out and mostly prefer a quiet night home with my family to drinking out.

Usually when I do go out, I mostly go out with my family to have dinner. My kids are not especially adventurous when it comes to food so we tend to go to the same few places for dinner. They include our favourite Chinese restaurant in Takamiya, our favourite Yakiniku restaurant in Hirao, our favourite Italian restaurant in Sakurazaka and our favourite French restaurant in Yakuin (The French restaurant we use for special occasions, wedding anniversaries or my wife’s birthday)

When I go out for lunch, I usually eat something quick and simple around our schools, mostly soba at a small soba restaurant in Takasago. 

Do you have any good recommendations for family-friendly restaurants in the Yakuin or Hirao area? If so please let me know!

今日のテーマは「Going Out（外出）」なので、私の外出習慣について話す良い機会です。
実のところ、私は外出があまり好きではなく、飲みに行くよりも家族と一緒に静かな夜を家で過ごすことを好むことが多いです。

外出するときはたいてい家族と一緒に夕食を食べに出かけるときです。
私の子どもたちは食べ物に関しては特に冒険的ではないので、夕食にはいくつかの同じ場所に行く傾向があります。
高宮にあるお気に入りの中華料理店、平尾のお気に入りの焼肉店、桜坂のお気に入りのイタリアンレストラン、薬院のお気に入りのフランス料理店 (特別な日、結婚記念日、または妻の誕生日に行くお店) によく行きます。

ランチに出かけるときは、たいてい学校の近くで手早く簡単なものを食べます。
よく行くのは、高砂にある小さなそば屋さんです。

There are so many expressions using the word “go” in English and they come in many different patterns. One of them is “go on a …” 

Here are some expressions commonly used,
Go on a date, go on a trip, go on a diet, go on a picnic, go on a business trip, go on a hike etc……

Ex. I’m going on a date this weekend with my girlfriend. Do you know any good places in Tenjin?

Ex. Mr. Sonoda went on a business trip to Fukuoka for 3 days. He is looking for a good location for an English school.
