Remote Work(リモートワーク・在宅勤務)について思うこと

Remote Work

What does remote work mean? It means employees working from a location other than the company offices. Such a location could be basically anywhere, the employee’s home, shared spaces, a private office or any other space outside the company’s buildings.

In the last 2 years and because of the Covid-19 pandemic, remote work has become part of many people’s lives. In Kensington as in many other schools the pandemic made us switch many of our classes online and we still have a very large number of students taking their classes from the comfort of their homes.
Personally, my feelings about remote work are mixed, I really enjoy doing it for a part of my workday but I don’t like spending all my workday at home in front of a pc. I feel tired at the end of the day and also if that was the case everyday I think my life would just go by without many highlights.

それは、従業員が会社のオフィス以外の場所で働くことを意味します。
場所は、従業員の家、共有スペース、プライベートオフィスなど、基本的にどこでもありえます。

過去２年間で、コロナのパンデミックにより、リモートワークは多くの方の生活の一部となりました。

個人的には、リモートワークに対する私の気持ちはまちまちです。
仕事の一部でそれを行うのはとても楽しいですが、家のパソコンの前で一日中仕事をするのは好きではありません。
一日の終わりには疲れを感じますし、もしそれが毎日なら、私の人生は多くのハイライトなしに過ぎ去ってしまうと思うからです。

Cutting Corners

“Cutting corners” is a useful phrase in business when we refer to removing things or reducing costs when producing content. If someone is “cutting corners” in a project, it means they are removing some stuff in it in order to it to be completed faster, or maybe because they are trying to reduce costs.lk

Cutting corners can be positive or negative, depending on the context, but it basically means – you’re reducing the time it takes for something to be completed, or reducing the amount of content it has. Or quality!

What is the Bottom line?

Hey everyone,

Today’s Business English expression is the “bottom line” and it means the end result of the accounts of the company, how much profit or loss a company has made. As is easy to guess, it’s a very important thing for every company in any sector if any industry.

Ex. How does the minimum salary raise in Fukuoka affect our bottom line?

Ex. The consumption tax increase a while back really hurt our bottom line.

Heya, Denny here.

This isn’t so much about a phrase in English, but more about culture in the English world of business.

In the West and in my experience, negotiating salaries and being more direct with employers is actually quite common and OK to do. In Japan it’s much softer and there is a lot of formality, but with Western companies you can be quite direct about how much you expect to earn at the workplace, and what your needs are.

Just be professional about it all. Instead of saying “I WANT XX AMOUNT OF MONEY”, you can say “I think because of my excellent performance, I have earned a raise.” That provides a reason for why you should get a raise, which means an increase in salary.

Be OK with negotiating and talking about the work. It’s your job, your life and your happiness!

 “I WANT XX AMOUNT OF MONEY”と話す代わりに、 “I think because of my excellent performance, I have earned a raise.” と言ってみましょう。待遇を良くするべき理由を述べることができ、昇給についても含まれています。

交渉したり、仕事について話すことをOKにしましょう。
あなたの仕事、生活、幸せに関することなのです！

Example

Since our topic for this week was “going out” today I would like to introduce a very useful expression for all you business people out there. The expression is “go on a business trip” and it means to go to a place on business.

Ex. Last week I was very busy, I went on a business trip to Oita and Kumamoto. I came back to Fukuoka on Friday night.

Hello everyone, did you have a blessed weekend?

Our Bizspeak expressions this week are “Fat chance” and Catch a break”
Fat Chance actually doesn’t mean a good chance of something happening. It means there’s very little or no chance at all of something happening. For example,  Fat chance of getting a seat on the morning train in Tokyo.

A:  Hey Ryunosuke, do you think we’ll get the Kensington IT system set up contract?
B: Fat chance of that, TKK technologies got it yesterday. 

“Catch a break” or get lucky break  means get lucky or to have a chance/an opportunity that improves your business or life situation dramatically.

A: Hey Ryonosuke, do you think we’ll get the Kensingston IT system set up contract?
B: Hmm… Fat chance of that. TKK technologies got it yesterday.
A: Oh no!  We haven’t signed any deals in the last few months,  It seems we just  can’t catch a break!

Pausing after an offer

Hi, Denny here.

A pretty useful business tactic in the English speaking world is to learn to pause after making a sales offer and not pushing further than that.

For example:
“I can offer you x for y amount of dollars.”
Don’t say anything after this, unless a question is asked.
The reason this is done is because it gives the customer only one option – to accept or not. If they ask for discounts, you can say “Sorry, but that’s the final offer” and maintain a pause. Again, you’re giving the customer the power to choose, but showing no pressure in the offer.

This often leads to them going all in or politely declining. Good news for you either way – because it doesn’t waste time on negotiations!

こうすることで、彼らは全て受け入れるか、丁寧にお断りするかに繋がります。
これは皆さんにとっても良い知らせです、なぜなら交渉する時間を無駄にしないからです！
