To expand one’s horizon(s) means to increase the range of one’s knowledge, understanding, or experience. 

One of the major benefits of studying and living abroad is to broaden or expand our horizons.

Life Stages

Hi Everyone,

Everyone goes through life stages, and everyone has different experiences – that’s why sharing stories and talking is so enriching. We can learn a whole lot from other people’s lives, just as long as we be humble and open to it.

For example, in my mid 20’s, I learned a lot about health, nutrition, physical fitness and weight lifting. I learned all about it by myself, as well as more efficient social skills. This phase of my life transformed me into a very different person. I became much more confident, relaxed, stronger and a lot healthier. It was a good foundation for my thirties, because now I have excellent health, few problems and keep myself from getting unhealthy very easily.

Sometimes though, I can be a little too strict.

みなさん、こんにちは。

誰もがライフステージを歩き、誰もがさまざまな経験をします。
そのため、ストーリーを共有したり話したりすることはとても充実感があります。
謙虚に、かつオープンである限り、他の人々の生活から多くのことを学ぶことができます。

たとえば、20代半ばに私は、健康、栄養、体力、ウェイトリフティングについて多くのことを学びました。
それらは独学し、また重要なソーシャルスキルも身につけました。
このフェーズで、私はとても変わりました。
前よりもはるかに自信を持ち、リラックスし、強く、そしてずっと健康になりました。
これは30代の自分にとっては良い基盤でした。
今では健康状態が良く、問題は少なく、不健康になりにくいからです。

ときどき、少し厳格すぎることがありますが。

Hello everyone,

This week in our group lessons around Fukuoka and online we are going to practice how to express our opinions on a variety of subjects. This is one of the most important subjects in the Kensington curriculum and since expressing opinion and learning how to provide reasoning and expand is such an integral part of our students journey towards fluency, we use parts of this lesson in a very large number of different Kensington subjects. 

Please come prepared and express a lot of opinions in our classes!

A: Hey, Morinosuke. I heard that your sister is going to study in Newzealand.
B: Yup. She’s all set. She’s leaving the day after tomorrow.

Hello there, hope your week is going well. In some of our classes this week, we’ll be talking about “Getting Ready” -for what?  for work (morning routine), bed (bedtime routine), a trip, a class or test, an important event etc
Please come to class ready to talk with your teacher or classmates about your morning routine, bedtime routine, how you prepare for a trip, an important event ….
Sequencers: First then / next / after that / Finally
We use sequencers to describe a process,  give instructions or tell a story.
When I get up,  I say a short prayer, then I take a shower…

こんにちは。今週はいかがお過ごしですか。
今週のいくつかのクラスでは、「Getting Ready（準備）」について話します。

何のための準備？：仕事（朝のルーティーン）、ベッド（寝る時のルーティーン）、旅行、クラスまたはテスト、重要なイベントなど。

朝のルーティーン、寝る時のルーティーン、旅行の準備方法、重要なイベントについて、講師やクラスメートと話す準備をして来てください。

順番を表現する言葉：
First (まず・初めに) … then (それから・次に) …
next (それから・次に) …
after that (そのあと)
Finally (最後に) …

英語ではこれらの言葉を使って、プロセスを説明したり、指示をしたり、ストーリーを話したりします。

When I get up,  I say a short prayer, then I take a shower…
(起きたら短いお祈りをして、それからシャワーを浴びて …)

“beat around the bush”

Today’s phrase is “Beat around the bush”. What does that mean?

Well, I could give a very long explanation of what it means, but I won’t beat around the bush – I’ll just tell you what it means directly.

That’s what it means, in the negative sense. To not beat around the bush is to be direct and make your point quickly. To beat around the bush means to not express your point quickly – you’re talking too much or not staying on topic.

Here are example ways to use this phrase:

“Let’s not beat around the bush”
“Stop beating around the bush”
“You keep beating around the bush!”

It’s a strange phrase, but a fun one to use – and sometimes you’ll hear it used by native speakers or in film.

At The Restaurant

This week’s topic is about being at a restaurant. 

We’ve all been to restaurants, but going to restaurants in different countries can be a bit of a challenge because of all the accents, pronunciation, language differences, etc. The lesson is meant to roleplay the experience of being at a restaurant, but one of the best things you can take from it is to keep it simple! Use your basic subject, verb object rulesets, keep your English efficient, and also use gesturing. If you don’t know what someone says too, you can ask them to speak slower, or simply revert back to..gesturing!

Sometimes you will just encounter language barriers, there’s no doubt about it. There are so many different kinds of accents and dialects in English, so just enjoy the experience of it and try to learn something new.

このレッスンでは、レストランでの会話をロールプレイすることを目的としていますが、このレッスンから得られる最高のものの一つは「シンプルに話すこと」です！
基本的なSVO型のルールを使って、効率的に英語を話し、ジェスチャーも使いましょう。
誰かが何を言っているのかわからない場合は、ゆっくり話すように頼むか、単にまたジェスチャーを使うこともできます。

Hello everyone,

the corona pandemic is slowly but surely moving on to the rear window and things are returning pretty much to normal except from the fact that we all have to wear masks most of the time.

The English expression I would like to introduce today is “get the booster” and it means to be vaccinated with the 3rd dose of the Covid vaccine. In English we usually just call it the booster. 

Ex. I’m planning to get the booster in June before my trip to Okinawa.

英語では通常、それを「booster」と呼びます。
