Home is where you make it

Hello there everyone. Since our lesson topic this month is Fukuoka City, I thought I’d introduce this phrase “Home is where you make it.” This means that no matter how far you are from your real  home, family, or country, you can still make a place feel as if it’s your own home. 

I can really relate to this phrase because even though I still feel very much still a Scottish guy and haven’t really learned how to blend in well in Japanese society, I still feel like Fukuoka is my home away from home and I’d probably miss it very much if I left.

みなさん、こんにちは。
今日は、今週のレッスンテーマ「Fukuoka City（福岡市）」にちなんで、「Home is where you make it.（住めば都）」というフレーズをご紹介します。

Home is where you make it.
つまり、今あなたがいる場所が、実際の家や家族や国からどれだけ離れていても、まるで自分の家のように感じることができるという訳です。

私はこのフレーズにかなり共感できます。
なぜなら、私はまだ生粋のスコットランド人だと感じているし、日本社会へ溶け込む方法もあまり学んでいないけれども、福岡はもう一つの私の家だと感じているからです。

もし福岡を去ったら、きっととても恋しく思うでしょう。

This weekend’s topic in our schools in Akasaka, Nishijin, Yakuin and online is one that is pretty close to home. Fukuoka City!!

In class we will be practicing making small talk with a foreign visitor to Fukuoka, talking about the things to do, see, and eat here, and giving recommendations of places to go and how best to get to them.

Give Directions

Hello there, hope you’re having a productive week. The topic  in most of our group classes  will be “Giving directions”. We’re going to practice Asking and Giving directions to a stranger in town or a friend, to  a place of interest.
In this lesson we will 

(1) Learn/review locational phrases (across from the stadium/at the corner of A and B…)

 (2) Using indirect questions instead of direct ones to sound more polite ( direct: Where’s the station? indirect: Do you know/Could you tell me  where the station is?

(3) Learn/review and practice usage of directional phrases (Go down the street, turn right at the convenience store/Make another right after Kensington Kindergarten) 

Task: You’re having a BBQ at your house. Invite your classmate(s) and give directions to your  home (*fiction…not your real address*)

みなさん、こんにちは。実り多い１週間をお過ごしでしょうか。

今日は「Give Directions（道を教える）」というレッスントピックについてご紹介します。
このレッスンでは街の見知らぬ人や友人へ、道を尋ねたり教えたりする練習をします。

（1）場所に関するフレーズを学習／確認します
　　・across from the stadium [スタジアムの向い]
　　・at the corner of A and B… [AとBが交わる角に]）

（2）直接的ではなく間接的に質問をして、より丁寧に聞こえるようにします
　　・直接的：Where’s the station? (駅はどこですか？)
　　・間接的：Do you know/Could you tell me  where the station is? (駅がどこか分かりますか？／駅がどこか教えていただけませんか？)

（3）方向に関するフレーズを学び、確認・練習をします
　　・Go down the street (通りを進んで、この先に)
　　・turn right at the convenience store/Make another right after Kensington Kindergarten ( (コンビニで右に曲がって、ケンジントン幼稚園の直後にまた右に曲がる)

タスク：あなたは家でバーベキューをしています。クラスメートを招待し、自宅への道順を教えてください（*実際の住所でなくて大丈夫です。*）

「Yeah no worries」はカジュアルな「どういたしまして」【日常英会話】

“Yeah no worries”

Happy Friday.

While this term is more an everyday phrase in a particular country – that being Australia – you might hear this one a LOT if you ever go there or if you speak to people much more Australian than I am.

“Yeah no worries” basically means no problem or “my pleasure”. It’s a way to say “you’re welcome” just in a very casual way. No worries means there is no problem – so if you hear it, it means…”no worries”!

ハッピー・フライデー。

「Yeah no worries（どういたしまして）」は特定の国、つまりオーストラリアでは日常的な言葉です。
オーストラリアに行ったことがある場合や、私よりもはるかにオーストラリア人と話す場合は、このフレーズをよく耳にするかもしれません。

「Yeah no worries」とは、基本的には、問題がないこと、または「my pleasure（どういたしまして）」を意味します。
とてもカジュアルに「you’re welcom（どういたしまして）」と言う方法です。
「no worries（心配がない）」ということは「no problem（問題がない）」ということです。
つまり、あなたがそのフレーズを聞いた場合、それは「no worries（問題ありません／どういたしまして）」という意味です。

Dreams for the Future

I’m not really into dreaming very deeply about the future, if I’m honest. I do think about what I want for the future and I make plans always for the long term, but usually I’m very focused on today, tomorrow, and how I can make my life the way I want it to be next week.

I think dreams are very important though! It’s useful to remember what is important to you and to plan for it in the long term – say, in the next 5 or 10 years – but dreams come true when we focus on building towards them now. Incremental steps are much, MUCH more important than only dreaming big!

正直なところ、私は将来について大きな夢を見ることにそこまで興味はありません。
私は将来に何を望んでいるのかを考え、常に長期的な計画を立てていますが、通常は今日や明日に集中していて、また、来週の自分の人生をどのように実現できるかについて重きを置いています。

でも夢をみることはとても大事だと思います！
夢は、自分にとって何が重要かを心に留めておき、長期的（たとえば、今後５年または１０年）な計画を立てるのに有用です。
今、夢を実現することに焦点を当てることができれば、夢は実現します。
しかし、ただ単に大きな夢を見ることよりも、一歩ずつ進むことの方がはるかに重要だと思うのです。

Hey everyone, 

Today, I’d like to introduce you a really natural way to ask for something. It’s ‘….. would be great” and following are some ways to use it. 

Q. Would you like some tea?
A. That would be great!

Q. What would you like to drink?
A. A beer would be great!

Q. Would you like a starter?
A. The bruschettas would be great!

You can also use it to schedule your English lessons.
Ex. Can I make a reservation for Tuesday? About 14:00 would be great!

Hello everyone,

This weekend in our classrooms in Fukuoka city and online we are going to be doing one of my favourite lessons. It’s called “planning a trip” and I really love this class because it simulates a natural discussion with a friend at a cafe or a restaurant while using a lot of useful language and grammar that we have already covered in many classes along our Kensington curriculum.

Some of the things we’ll be doing is Small talk with a friend, ordering at a restaurant, asking and making suggestions and agreeing, disagreeing about different traveling options.

The corona situation in Fukuoka and across the world is steadily improving so it’s a good time to be preparing for a trip!!

Get Itchy Feet

Hello again!

Since this weekend’s topic is about travelling, I thought I’d introduce this phrase to you “get itchy feet”. This means that you get a strong urge to travel somewhere, but it is not only used for that, we also use it to talk about feeling like you want a change. 

Example

I’m really getting itchy feet. It’s been two years since we couldn’t leave the country and I’m dying to travel somewhere nice and warm. 

I really like my job but I’ve been working there for 5 years now. I’m starting to get itchy feet and will probably start looking for something new.
