Hi there, are you having a lovely Friday? Our everyday English this week is a slang “Tell me about it!” It means I totally agree and understand what you’re talking about. 

Akane: The new software is difficult to use, Morinosuke.
Morinosuke: Tell me about it!  Everyone is having trouble with it.

Agreeing and Disagreeing

How’s your week going everyone? Hope you’re keeping warm in the cold mid January days. Agreeing and Disagreeing, will be the topic in most of our classes this week. In this class will practice

  • giving short responses in agreement or disagreement to a statement ( me too, so do I, me neither, neither do I …)
  • making  comparisons using er.ier, more(cheaper, tastier, more expensive)  and superlative( est, iest, most (cheapest, the tastiest, the most expensive) 
  •  a number of ways to show agreement and disagreement ( I agree, Exactly! That’s right. Absolutely! I think so too.  Yeah, maybe, I know what you mean but….Hmm I’m not sure about that, Really? Seriously?)

皆さん、今週はいかがお過ごしですか？1月半ばの寒い日々ですが,暖かくして過ごされていますか？
今週、多くのレッスンのトピックは、「Agreeing and Disagreeing　賛成と反対」です。レッスンでは以下の様な練習を行います。

・状況に対しての賛成または反対の短い返答をする
 　( me too, so do I, me neither, neither do I …)

・er.ier, moreを使用しての比較と、最上級。
　(cheaper, tastier, more expensive)

Here is a nice jolly idiom for you to put you in a festive mood!
To “light up like a Christmas tree” means to look or seem very happy about something and be all smiles.

J.“Oh really? I’m glad to hear that.”

Christmas and New Year

Hello again!

I honestly can’t believe that I’m writing this again, Christmas really seems to come around more and more quickly every year! I wonder if you feel the same…? 

The topic for this weekend is Christmas and New Year at our schools in Yakuin, Nishijin, Akasaka, and online. 

We will be talking about Christmas and new year traditions, how you usually spend time at the end of the year, what you did last year, and how you plan on spending the holiday season this year. In the higher level classes we will be discussing some of the differences between Christmas and new year in Japan and overseas and how the celebration has changed over time. 

Sounds pretty good to me!

「Sometime」は便利な表現

“Sometime”

The word “sometime” can be applied in many different contexts when using English, so it’s a useful word to take into account and learn!

For example, you can say “let’s meet up sometime” as a way to say that you want to meet in the future, but you’re unsure when – basically, you haven’t confirmed your schedule yet. You can also modify it to describe things you sometimes do. “I play games sometimes” or “I sometimes make pancakes for breakfast” means that it is an action you do infrequently.

Sometime can be a applied in so many ways, like many English words, so it’s a handy one to take into account. You should use it..sometime!

教育について考える

Education

Hi, Denny here.

Education is a big deal to me and is basically my primary career choice as of this moment. I usually focus on fundamental aspects of it though and from a philosophical perspective – after all, philosophy is my greatest passion!

I usually think about how we form language and why we do it, then consider how we can teach better understanding those things. I wrote a very small book about it a few years ago which is available on Amazon. It’s only in English and very complex, but it defines language from a different perspective – it’s not a tool for communication primarily, but a tool of cognition. Try to think of things without language. Apart from visual thought, you can’t!

It’s fascinating stuff, and a lot of that thought I apply to my lessons.

What does “so far” mean?

Hey everyone,

When my students hear the expression “so far” most of them usually think it has something to do with distance. In fact it doesn’t, it is related to time and it simply means “until now”.

Ex. What is the best restaurant you have been to in Fukuoka so far?
Ex. So far the best English school I worked for in Fukuoka is of course Kensington Eikaiwa.
