“Fair Enough”

Hey everyone, Denny here.

“Fair Enough” isn’t really UK or US English, but it’s very commonly used in Australia.

“Fair enough” means “that’s fine” or “OK”. It’s kind of strange when you think about it, but the thing about Australian English is that it tends to shorten a lot of words or play with words in a unique way.

Another thing you can learn is “Yeah, nah.” which means “no”, but “nah, yeah” means “yes”.
Don’t worry about that last part though…that’s confusing for a lot of people, unless you live in Australia!

“Fair Enough”はイギリスやアメリカではそうでもないですが、オーストラリアでは一般的に良く使われています。

“Fair Enough”は、構いませんよ、やOK(しょうがないね)という意味です。

奇妙だと思うかもしれませんが、オーストラリアの英語では多くの単語が省略されたり、面白い言葉遊びをする傾向があります。
他にもあなたにお教えできるのは、

 “Yeah, nah.”、これは “no”を意味します。でも “nah, yeah” は“yes”.を意味します。

あなたがオーストラリアに住む場合を除き、最後の部分についてはそんなに心配しないで下さい、これには沢山の人が混乱しています！

Books, Films and Video Games

G’day everyone, Denny here.

Some of my student’s know that I like books, films and video games, but they really don’t know just how much I know about games and film, especially.

I actually own over 1000 games, both on my PC and across many consoles (a console is a home system, like a PlayStation). I used to be a freelance journalist for a gaming website, so I got a lot of free games to review and write about.

I can give you detailed information on the history of video games and which ones were super important for the development of 3D graphics, especially. When it comes to films, I can give detailed descriptions on why filmmakers use certain lights, camera angles and things like that to express certain themes.

You can ask me about it any time. I’m big on books too, but not as much as games and film.

皆さんごきげんよう、デニーです。

何人かの生徒さんは私が本や映画、そしてビデオゲーム好きだとご存じですが、特にビデオゲームや映画について私がどのくらい知っているかは知らないでしょう。

実は私は、ＰＣやコンソール(プレイステーションの様な家庭用ゲーム機器)に、1000個以上のゲームを所有しています。かつてはフリーランスでゲームサイトのジャーナリストをしていたので、無料で多くのゲームを入手しレビューを書いていました。

特に、ビデオゲームの歴史や3Dグラフィックの発展にとても重要だった作品の情報などを提供できます。
また映画に関しては、なぜ映画製作者は、あるテーマを表現するために特定の照明やカメラアングルを使うのかについて詳しく説明ができます。

もし興味があればいつでも聞いて下さい。
私は本も大好きですが、ゲームや映画ほどではありません。

Spoilt for Choice

Hello there everyone,

Continuing with the theme of choices, I’d like to show you this commonly used English expression “Spoilt for choice” which means that you have a large amount of something to choose from, maybe even to the point where you possibly can’t decide. 

Example
“We had an amazing holiday in Japan. There was so much good food. We were really spoilt for choice and wanted to stay longer so we could  try it all!”

皆さんこんにちは。

引き続き「Choices-選択」をテーマに、広く使われている “Spoilt for choice”という表現を紹介したいと思います。
これは、選ぶことができないほど膨大な選択肢がある、つまり贅沢な悩みという意味を表します。

例えば

“We had an amazing holiday in Japan. There was so much good food. We were really spoilt for choice and wanted to stay longer so we could  try it all!”

This Weekend’s topic
Choices

Hello, there everyone, 

The topic for our classes this weekend in the Akasaska , Nishijin, and Yakuin schools is “Choices”.
In the class we will be talking about our preferences, making choices while shopping, making, accepting, and refusing suggestions for weekend plans, and choosing what to do together. It’s a pretty simple, but very practical class so I look forward to teaching it to you all this weekend!

Time

Hey everyone,

It’s time to talk about time, this week in our lessons in Nishijin, Yakuin, Akasaka and of course online. 

Some of the things we are going to learn different units of time, learn two different ways to tell the time in English, talk about our daily routines and opening times and talk about how we spend our time at different times of the day.

This class was created by Jaimie and covers very useful vocabulary and grammar. Also it’s a lot of fun!

‘Bending the rules’

Hey guys, 

Today I have a really common expression that relates to this week’s topic: ‘rules’.
Here are some example sentences first:

‘You’re normally not allowed to take an exam if you arrive late, but because of the student’s excuse, his teacher bent the rules for him.’

‘The management team all bend the rules to give themselves more vacation time and bigger bonuses.’

In these examples ‘bend the rules’ means that you are not following the rules very well, but you are also not breaking them, so what you are doing is kind of in the middle of good and bad. But ‘bending the rules’ usually suggests that somebody is doing something that they shouldn’t, perhaps in a sneaky or clever way.

Hope this helps guys, I’m going to go and eat some cheesecake. I’m on a diet at the moment, but sometimes it’s fun to bend the rules! 🙂

やぁ皆さん

今日は、今週のトピック「規則」に関連したとても一般的な表現を紹介したいと思います。
まずは例文をいくつか挙げてみます。

‘You’re normally not allowed to take an exam if you arrive late, but because of the student’s excuse, his teacher bent the rules for him.’
もし遅刻した場合、通常は試験を受ける事は許可されません。しかしその生徒の理由によって教師は生徒のために規則を曲げてくれました。

‘The management team all bend the rules to give themselves more vacation time and bigger bonuses.’
マネジメントチームは自身の休暇とより多くのボーナスのために規則を曲げている。

これらの例にある「bend the rules」とは規則にきちんと従っていないが、規則を破ってもいない事を意味しています。つまりあなたのやっていることは、良くも悪くもないという事です。
しかし「bending the rules」は通常、誰かがおそらくずる賢く頭の良い方法で、やるべきではないことを行なっていることを示唆しています。

Hey guys!
This week’s subject is ‘Rules’. 

In life there are many rules that we create or follow, be that at work, home, or as members of the general public. We often use quite specific grammar when talking about rules, for example: ‘We can’t have pets in our building.’ or ‘I have to wear a uniform’. 

In the level 2 classes we’ll also go over some potential situations, such as ‘If you could change an age limit, what would it be?’ The ‘if’ and ‘would’ are the key words to remember in potential sentences, try not to forget them!

やあ皆さん！


今週のサブジェクトは「規則」です。
生活する上で、仕事や家、一般社会の一員として、私達は沢山の規則を作り守らなければいけません。
規則について話す時はかなり具体的な文法を使うことがあります。

例えば、
‘We can’t have pets in our building.- 私達のビルではペットを飼うことはできません’
 ‘I have to wear a uniform – 制服を着なければいけません’

レベル2のレッスンでは、「もし年齢制限を変更できるとしたら、何をしたいですか？」の様な、いくつかの可能性がある状況についても話します。
「If」と「would」は可能性を表す文章の中で、覚えておくべきキーワードです。忘れないようにして下さい！

Hello everyone,
How’re things going at work, home and with your English communication studies?

This week in most of our classes the topic will be “Talking about your past”. We’re going to share about what we did or enjoyed in the ( early, mid, late 70s, 80s 90…,our childhood, teens, 20s etc)  Where did you go to high school, university and what did you study? Did you belong to any clubs? What pop culture did you enjoy in your teens, 20s…? Our first experiences ( our first jobs, trip abroad, car etc)
Any regrets? What should you have or not done in your past?

Grammar point Level 2-3   3rd conditional
I wish I’d / I wish I hadn’t/ I should have/ Shouldn’t have

I wish I’d studied harder at school.
I should have taken the full time job at Microsoft.
I wish I hadn’t been so lazy in my teens.

70、80、90年代の前半、半ば、後半や、子供時代、10代、20代にどんなことをしたり、楽しんだかについて共有しましょう。

どこの高校、大学へ行き、何を学びましたか？
何かクラブ活動に参加しましたか？
10代、20代はどんなポップカルチャーを楽しみましたか？
最初の経験、例えば最初の仕事、海外旅行、車など…。

後悔していることはありますか？過去にやるべきだったこと、またはやらなければ良かったことは何ですか？
文法のポイント
Level 2-3の生徒さんは、3rd conditional（サードコンディショナル ・仮定法過去完了）を使いましょう。
I wish I’d / I wish I hadn’t/ I should have/ Shouldn’t have

I wish I’d studied harder at school.
学校でもっと勉強しておけばなぁ。

I should have taken the full time job at Microsoft.
マイクロソフトのフルタイムの仕事を受けるべきだった。

I wish I hadn’t been so lazy in my teens.
10代の時にあんなに怠けなければなあ。

“How did you come to that conclusion?”

Heya, Denny here.
Today’s English is sort of every day English, but extremely useful.

When in conversation with people about complicated topics, and someone makes a strong claim about something (for example: all swans are white – this is a famous question in philosophy), you can as “How did you come to that conclusion?”.

I wrote about open questions in the past, and this one is a very powerful open question that gives people the opportunity to give you their reasons behind their claim. It’s useful in all situations because it’s asking about the evidence and information behind things.

The News

Hi, Denny here.

If I am perfectly honest, I don’t actually read the news much in my free time. I focus a lot on technology, psychology and ideas, but usually avoid the rest.

It’s not because I don’t like reading about what is happening, but the reality is that with modern technology, you have the entire world’s news in your hand – in the form of a smart phone. It’s amazing, but also dangerous, because it can keep you away from what matters, which is your life and happiness!

Sometimes, news is great. Most of the time though, it distracts us from what’s important. In my case, painting and teaching.

これは素晴らしいことですが、危険なことでもあります。なぜなら、あなたを人生と幸せから遠ざけることも可能だからです！

時々はニュースは素晴らしいものです。しかし多くの場合、重要なことから気をそらしてしまいます。私の場合、絵を描くことと、教えることです。
