Hi there everyone,

This weekend’s lesson topic is about different stages of life so I thought I’d introduce this phrase to you.  “long in the tooth”
Long in the tooth simply means getting old. So for example.

“I always feel really tired after the gym nowadays. I’m getting a bit long in the tooth for kickboxing.”

Hello there everyone!

This weekend in Akasaka, Yakuin, and Nishijin, we will be learning about life stages. We will describe the different stages of life from cradle to grave, talking about what you were like growing up, marriage, parenthood, illness, and getting older. It’s really useful class and one of my favourites to teach.

Hey ya everyone!

Since we are going to be talking about looking for things this weekend in our group lessons around Fukuoka city, a good expression to know is “turning over a new leaf”. It means to change something or to start anew.

After years of being unhappy at work, Helene decided to turn over a new leaf and pursue her dream of being a professional interior designer.

Looking for something

Hi everyone,

Exciting news, I just finished up making the latest Kensington class called “Looking for something”. As every class in Kensington it’s in 3 levels, and it ranges from slightly more basic conversations in Level 1, to more open ended in Level 2 and to pretty philosophical in Level 3. I’m very excited to see how our students will do in this class as it tries to cover a lot of vocabulary introduced before in our curriculum.

If you would like to take this class in a private lesson, please let us know! As a reminder, group students can also take private classes for a very reasonable fee of 4,500yen/class (5,000yen/class on the weekends and after 18:00 on Weekdays!)

ワクワクする様なニュースです！

今ちょうど、最新のケンジントンのレッスン「Looking for Something」を作り終えました。ケンジントンの通常のレッスンと同様に、３つのレベルに分かれています。レベル1では少し基本的な会話、レベル２ではよりオープンな会話、レベル３ではかなり洗練された会話となっています。
このレッスンでは、以前のカリキュラムで紹介した沢山の語彙が網羅されているので、生徒さん達がどのようにレッスンを受けられるか見るのがとても楽しみです。

もし、プライベートレッスンでこの授業を受けてみたい方はお知らせ下さい。

‘Tar with the same brush’

Hey guys. If you ever feel like somebody is making negative assumptions about you, based on people you’re related to or a group you’re associated with, then I have an idiom for you!

“Liam, your sister is so lazy, I wouldn’t be surprised if you were to.”
“Don’t tar me with the same brush, I’m not lazy!”

“Football supporters all get tarred with the same brush when there’s trouble.”

This is a particularly useful phrase for our topic this week (Stereotypes). We can use it whenever we feel someone is being unfairly judged, based on a group they belong to(including nationality), or a person they know.

リアム、君の妹はとても怠け者だから、君もそうだったとしても驚かないよ

一緒にしないで、私は怠け者じゃないよ！

サッカーのサポーターが問題を起こすと、サポーター全員が同じ眼で見られる。

これは、特に今週のトピック「ステレオタイプ」に便利な表現です。所属するグループ（国籍も含めて）や知っている個人に基づいて、誰かが不当な判断をされていると感じたらいつでもこの表現を使うことができますよ。

Stereotypes

Hey guys! 

This week’s subject is ‘Stereotypes’. If you have an opinion about me as a person, e.g. “I think Liam is strange!”, then that’s really just an opinion you hold. But, if you were to say that about a group of people, e.g. “I think British people are strange!”, then that sounds like a stereotype. Especially if the meaning is more negative, stereotypes don’t tend to be positive. 

We’ll be talking all about stereotypes, which are often great conversation starters. And they’ll give us a chance to use plenty of adjectives. Nice!

もしあなたが私という人間について、例えば「リアムは変だと思う！」というような意見を持っているとして、それはあなたが持っている意見に過ぎません。しかし、例えば「イギリス人は変だと思う！」というように、集団についてそう言ったとしたら、それはステレオタイプのように聞こえます。特に、その意味がよりネガティブなものであれば、ステレオタイプはポジティブなものではない傾向があります。

会話のきっかけにもなるステレオタイプについて話しましょう。そして、形容詞をたくさん使うチャンスでもあります。ナイス！

The magic of “about”

Heya, Denny here.

In English, the usage of the word “about” is extremely powerful and can be utilized in almost any context.
When you’re talking about things, you can use it to express information about specific things, just like how I am doing right now, in this sentence.

Some examples “There are many things I like about you”. “Let’s speak about this topic.” “I don’t know what this is about.”

Use it, and use it often. It helps make sentences smoother and more specific!

Famous People and Celebrities


Hi everyone, Denny here.
This week’s topic is about famous people and celebrities. Have you ever met anyone famous before?

I’ve actually met a few people, but not movie stars – rather, I’ve met well known game developers and designers. When I was in my early 20’s, I worked as a freelance journalist for an independent website, and during that time I got to meet a lot of very creative minds that work in the entertainment industry. One such guy was Suda51 – he’s actually a game developer from Japan. He was really cool, because his personality was very stand out.

During lessons, try to talk about people you’ve met, and also talk about the people you admire – as an example, I’m a big admirer of Marion Cotillard. She’s a pretty good actress, but she’s also super gorgeous!

実際に数人の有名人に会った事がありますが、映画スターではありません。
私がお会いしたのは、有名なゲーム開発者やデザイナーです。
私は20台前半の頃、独立系ウェブサイトのフリージャーナリストとして働いていましたが、その間にエンタテイメント業界のクリエイティブな人々と多く出会いました。そのうちの1人、 Suda51氏は日本からやって来たゲーム開発者で、とても個性的でクールでした。

レッスンの中では今までにあなたが出会った人々や、尊敬する人々にについても話してみましょう。例えば、マリオン・コティヤールをとても尊敬しています。彼女は素晴らしい女優であり、とてもゴージャスでした！
