 How to use “interested in”

One of the targets of our level 1 classes this week is the usage of “interested in”. Students sometimes confuse “interested in” and “interesting”. As with all ed/ing adjectives, the -ed adjective describes a feeling and the -ing adjective an opinion.

  • I’m interested in sports. (That’s a feeling, I feel interested)
  • I think sports are interesting. (That’s an opinion)

There are so many ed/ing adjectives for example, excited / exciting

  • I’m excited about our new school in Josuimachi. (That’s a feeling, I feel excited)
  • Tokyo is an exciting city. (That’s an opinion)

Going back to ”interested in” some usual questions are:

  • What are you interested in?
  • Are you interested in Japanese culture?

今週のレベル1クラスのターゲットは“interested in”の使用です。

生徒の皆さんは時々、“interested in” （興味がある）と “interesting”（興味深い）を混乱して使っていることがあります。

ed / ing (形容詞)は、-ed 形容詞は「気持ち」を、-ing 形容詞は「物事に対する意見」を表現しています。

  • I’m interested in sports. (気持ち)
    I think sports are interesting. (意見)

他にも ed / ing 形容詞はたくさんあります。
例えば、excited （楽しみである）/ exciting（楽しそう）です。

  • I’m excited about our new school in Josuimachi.  (気持ち)
  • Tokyo is an exciting city. (意見)

”interested in”の話に戻って、これを使った質問には以下のようなものがあります。

  • What are you interested in?
    (あなたは何に興味がありますか？)
  • Are you interested in Japanese culture?
    (日本の文化に興味がありますか？)

これらの表現をクラス内で使ってみましょう。

This week’s subject
Culture

This weekend in our Kensington classes, our target will be to have an as natural as possible conversation about culture. Culture is a really big subject and it includes a variety of things we can talk about. We are going to break it down into three categories, mainly food, traditional culture and modern culture.

In the lower level classes we’ll be focusing slightly on some very useful grammar such as present perfect, present simple and “would you like” questions and in the higher level classes will be focusing more on fluency and being able to both talk about our own culture in relative detail but also be able to ask about other people’s cultures too.

There’s so much to talk about and it should be a super fun class!

文化についてというと、とても大きなテーマで、内容も様々あるかと思いますが、今回は主に、食べ物、伝統的文化、現代的文化の3つにカテゴリー分けしていきます。

初級者向けクラスでは、現在完了形や現在形といった日常でよく使う文法や“would you like”を使った質問を会話内で活用することを中心に学びます。
上級者向けクラスではより流暢に話せることや自分たちの文化を詳細とともに説明するだけでなく、多文化について質問できるようになることにもフォーカスして学習します。

Hi there everyone,

Since this weekend’s topic is about events, I’d like to show you a couple of ways to express enthusiasm namely “ can’t wait” and “looking forward to”

Example

There is a big boxing match this weekend. I can’t wait,  I’ve been waiting to see this for ages. 

I’m really looking forward to my summer holiday this year. I have two weeks off and we are heading to the south coast of Spain. It’s going to be amazing.

“ can’t wait” と“looking forward to” の2つを紹介したいと思います。

例

“ can’t wait”
There is a big boxing match this weekend. I can’t wait,  I’ve been waiting to see this for ages.

(今週末、大きなボクシングの試合があります。楽しみで待ちきれません、ずっと観たいと思っていたんです。)

“looking forward to”
I’m really looking forward to my summer holiday this year. I have two weeks off and we are heading to the south coast of Spain. It’s going to be amazing.

worth a visit

TGIF(Thank God It’s Friday!) 

Hello there, hope you’d a great and productive week at work. Any plans for the weekend? Well, not much for me. I’ll probably just chill at home. 

Our everyday English expression is “worth a visit”

We use the expression “worth a visit” to suggest or recommend a good place to visit or to see.

If you go to Oita, Yufuin Onsen is definitely worth a visit. It’s one of the best hot springs in Kyushu and Japan.

 

Related expressions:     worth a try, worth the effort/time/trouble…or  not worth the trouble….

週末は何か予定がありますか？

私は特に予定はなく、家でゆっくりすると思います。

 

さて、日常でよく使う英語の表現をご紹介します。

“worth a visit”

この表現は、訪れたり、見たりすることをお勧めする時に使います。

 

If you go to Oita, Yufuin Onsen is definitely worth a visit. It’s one of the best hot springs in Kyushu and Japan.

（もし大分に行くなら、湯布院は絶対に訪れるべきです。湯布院は九州、そして日本の中で最高の温泉のひとつです）

 

Related expressions : worth a try, worth the effort/time/trouble…or  not worth the trouble….

 

関連表現：  worth a try,（試してみる価値がある） worth the effort/time/trouble…（努力する、時間をかける、苦労するだけの価値がある）or  not worth the trouble….（手間をかける価値はない、必要ない）

Talk about Kyushu

Hello there, it feels warmer in many parts of Kyushu, doesn’t it? Is spring perhaps coming soon in Kyushu? This week, in most of our classrooms, we’re going to talk about the amazing Kyushu.

Let’s be  prepared to

  • talk about our travelling experiences in Kyushu (present perfect ….past) 
  • talk about our travelling habits in Kyushu ( present tense)
  • talk about traveling wants/plans ( Future / I‘d like to)
  • Ask for suggestions with “should I / do you think I should / would you” and “What’s a good / What’s the best”
  • Give suggestions with “I think you should / you could / I’d / I think it’s worth”
  • Ask/Give Directions/info specific to Kyushu

On a practical note, you should be able make a short travel itinerary around Kyushu for a friend visiting Kyushu for the first time.

Please show and tell your teacher(s) and classmates the wonders of Kyushu in class.

実用するには
初めて九州を周る友達のために短い旅程を立ててあげられるといいですね。

Be my valentine

Hey guys, 

‘Will you be my valentine?’ This special holiday has a special way to ask someone out for a date: ‘Will you be my Valentine?’. It’s kind of an older thing to say though, so if you ever want to ask someone out on a date in English, it’s best to say something like: ‘Would you like to go for a drink sometime?’ or ‘Can I take you out for dinner this weekend?’.

“Music to my ears!”

In English, we often say “That’s music to my ears!” We say this when we hear good news, usually that directly benefits us. It means we are very happy to hear the new information. For example, last month my friend Jo asked me if I could help him to move house. You see, I drive a car here in Fukuoka, but I think Jo doesn’t know anyone else with a car! He was a little worried because he doesn’t have a driver’s licence and therefore cannot rent a car. He has a lot of stuff, including some heavy furniture, so he didn’t think he could move apartments by himself. When I gave Jo the good news and told him I had some free time on the weekend and that I could help him move apartments with my car, he was very pleased. He said, “Ross, that is music to my ears! I don’t know what I would have done otherwise.”

So the next time you hear great news, or a friend offers you help that makes your life a little better or easier, you can use this expression to let them know what a difference their help makes.

英語では、通常は自分たちに直接関係するような良いニュースを聞いた時によく「Music to my ears!」と言います。その知らせを聞いてとても幸せだ、という意味です。例えば、先月友人のジョーが私に、引越しの手伝いができるかどうか尋ねました。ご存知の通り、私は福岡で車を運転しています。でもジョーは免許を持っていないのでレンタカーを借りることができず、車を持っている人を誰も知らなかったので少し心配していました。彼の荷物はすごく多くて、中にはすごく重い家具もあるので一人では引越せないと思っていたのです。私がジョーに、週末に空いた時間があって、車で引越しを手伝うことができるという良いニュースを伝えた時、彼はとても喜びました。
「ロス、Music to my ears! 終わらないと思っていたよ！」

次回良いニュースを聞いたり、友達があなたの生活が良くなったり簡単になる手伝いを申し出てくれた時には、この表現を使って彼らのおかげですごく助かったと知らせることができますね。

Music

This week’s subject is “Music” – so we are going to be talking about all our favourite artists, albums and songs. Music is such a big part of life that I think we often forget about it! Whether we’re watching TV, surfing the web, or even shopping in the supermarket, chances are we are listening to music at various points during each day of our lives. The most important aspect of music is perhaps how it influences us, and how it has the power to change the way we feel. This is what we really want to talk about in class. Of course, we can talk about our favourite singers – but why are they our favourite? When do we listen to them, and how does their music make us feel?

For me, I like a wide variety of music. However, recently I’ve been listening a lot to the artist “The Weeknd”. I’m really into British and American pop music. In fact, The Weeknd is actually a Canadian artist, from Toronto, Ontario. He is one of the most famous artists in the world right now, and he is even due to perform at the Superbowl this year. This is perhaps the biggest sporting event of the US calendar, and the half-time show is really important because it’s watched by millions of people all over the world. His genre can be described as pop or R&B. I recommend checking out his song called “Blinding Lights” – it became a Number 1 hit in 34 countries! I often listen to his music, including this song, while I’m cooking at home. It is really upbeat, but also helps me to relax as it reminds me of my university days back in Scotland, when I used to listen to similar kinds of music.

今週のレッスントピックは「音楽」です。大好きなアーティスト、アルバム、曲について話しましょう。

音楽がいかに生活の中で大きな割合を占めているかを、私達は時々忘れてしまいます！テレビを観ている時も、ネットサーフィンをしている時も、スーパーで買い物をしている時でさえも、毎日の生活の中のあらゆる場面で音楽を聞いているのです。

音楽の最も重要な側面は、おそらく、いかに私達に影響を与えるかと、私達の感情を変える力を持っていることでしょう。これについてはレッスンでぜひ話したいです。

もちろん、人気の歌手についても話しましょう、なぜ彼らは人気があるのでしょうか？いつ彼らの音楽を聴いて、彼らの音楽は私達をどんな気分にさせますか？

私は幅広いジャンルの音楽が好きです。でも最近では「The Weeknd」というというアーティストを良く聴いています。私は特にUKとアメリカのPOPミュージックが好きですが、実は彼らはカナダのトロント、オンタリオの出身です。現在では世界で最も有名なアーティストの1人で、今年のスーパーボウルでパフォーマンスをする予定さえあるのです。スーパーボウルは、おそらくアメリカで行われている最も大きいスポーツイベントで、世界中の何百万人もの人々が観る、ハーフタイムショウは本当に重要です。彼のジャンルは、POP、またはR＆Bと言えるでしょう。

「Blinding Lights」という曲をチェックしてみてください。３４もの国でナンバー1ヒットになった曲です！私はよく家で料理をしながらこの曲も含めて、彼の曲を聴きます。かなりアップビートですが、同じ様な種類の音楽をよく聴いていたスコットランドでの大学生時代を思い出させ、リラックスさせてくれます。
