One of the grammar targets of our classes this week is the use of “use it for/to” to convey purpose.

For example,

J: What’s your favourite work app?

T: My favourite app is Slack.

J: I see, what do you use Slack for?

T: I use Slack to communicate with my coworkers and to keep work-related notes Make sure to pre-study our material well and see you in class!

Mobile Phones

Hello everyone, 

This week’s lesson target is to have a natural conversation about mobile phones. During that natural conversation we are going to as always be hitting some Vocab and Grammar targets.

Some of the things we’ll be practicing in our Level 1 and 2 Mobile Phone classes are

  • A general review of our level 1 grammar
  • Practice follow up questions to continue the conversation
  • Learn a lot of phone-related vocabulary

Our level 3 classes as always we’ll be focusing on expressing opinions, expansion and having a very natural conversation about phones.

This class is an excellent class to test what you have learnt in Kensington so far!

Walking on thin ice

Hello again! Freezing isn’t it!

This is one of my favourite expressions, my mum used to say it to me on a daily basis and now I often get the chance to use it on my kids. 

Walking on thin ice means that you are very close to being in trouble for something. 

Example
This is the third time this week you’ve been late for work! You are skating on thin ice Mr Mastoris!

Couch potato/Fit as a Fiddle 

TGIF! (Thank God It’s Friday!)
Hello everyone, how was the week at work? Are you looking forward to the weekend?
For  our everyday English, let’s learn or review two health/diet/exercise related expressions:

Couch potato  A lazy person or someone who likes to spend a lot of time sitting on a couch.

  A:  Morinosuke just watches TV and eats snacks all day!

  B: He is a real couch potato, isn’t he?

Fit as a Fiddle   A fiddle is another word for a violin. If you’re “fit as a fiddle”, you’re in very good   health and in good shape.

  A: I had a health check up yesterday, the doctor said I’m as fit as a fiddle!

  B: Good to hear that, Kaito. Your hard work at the gym is paying off.

みなさんこんにちは。今週の仕事はどうでしたか？週末が待ち遠しいですか？
今日は健康、ダイエット、運動に関連した2つの日常英会話の表現について学びましょう。

Couch potato ：怠け者や多くの時間をソファで過ごすのが好きな人のこと

 A: Morinosuke just watches TV and eats snacks all day!
（もりのすけは1日中ただお菓子をたべながらテレビを観ているよ！）

 B: He is a real couch potato, isn’t he?
（彼は本当に怠け者だよね）

Fit as a Fiddle：Fiddleはバイオリンという意味ですが、「fit as a fiddle」でとても健康的で体調が良いことを表します。

 A: I had a health check up yesterday, the doctor said I’m as fit as a fiddle!
（昨日健康診断を受けたんです、お医者さんにとても健康だと言われました！）

 B: Good to hear that, Kaito. Your hard work at the gym is paying off.（それは良かったね、カイトさん。ジムで一生懸命頑張ったかいがありますね）

Hello there, how’s everything shaping up? Hope you’re keeping warm and healthy in the cold January weather. This week in our classrooms we’ll be talking about Health, diet and exercise.

Let’s prepare to talk about:

  • What’s good or bad for health? Why?

  • Diets/cooking and eating habits
    How often do you cook/eat out? Have you ever been/gone on a diet? What kind?
  • Healthy food we should eat more often and unhealthy food we should avoid or eat less often

New Year’s resolutions

Hey guys, 

Have you all made your New Year’s resolutions? In England, it’s a tradition to set a goal or target for the year, that we will often fail or ignore by February! The most common ones would be to quit smoking, quit drinking or get more exercise.

So, you can ask anyone ‘What’s your New Year’s resolution?’. They might say something like ‘My New Year’s resolution is to read more’, or they might say ‘I didn’t make one’.

You can ask your teacher for the next class, I’m sure all of us have made ambitious and positive resolutions!

皆さんは新年の目標を立てましたか？イングランドでは、その年のゴールや目標を決め流のが伝統です。時々は2月までに失敗したりやめてしまったりする事もあるでしょうけど！

もっともよくあるのは、禁煙、禁酒、もっと運動する、です。

では、誰かに「新年の目標は何ですか？」と聞いてみましょう。彼らは「私の新年の目標はもっと読書をする、です」と言うかもしれないし、「何も決めていません」と言うかもしれません。

次回のレッスンで、講師にも質問してみましょうきっと全員が野望と前向きな目標を立てているに違いありません！

Hello one and all,

This week’s subject is Winter.

We’re gonna talk about winter activities and customs in Japan, and in doing so, we’ll practice how to modify our sentences! We can add extra information with words like ‘usually, sometimes and always’, or changing ‘I  like’ to ‘I can’t stand’. We’ll also use ‘did you’ and ‘have you’ to talk about last winter and this winter, respectively.

その中でどうやって文章を修正するかについても練習しましょう！私達は、「usually(普段は)、sometimes（時々）、 always(いつも)」の様に単語に追加の情報を加えたり、「I like to (私は〜が好きだ)」を「I can’t stand(私は〜が我慢できない)」の様にに置き換える事もできます。
去年の冬と今年の冬にそれぞれについて話す時には「did you」「have you」も使います。

Talk about myself/my hometown/my country
New Year celebrations in Edinburgh

As many of you know, my hometown is Edinburgh – and it’s really famous for its New Year celebrations. We actually call new year “Hogmanay” in Scotland. On December 31st, there is a big street party in the main street in the city. The roads are closed and the street is just filled with people. There are bands playing loud music on the stages and it’s so packed it’s hard to move. Of course, it’s very cold in Scotland at the end of the year. Everyone is usually freezing, and wearing a really big winter jacket, hat, scarf and gloves! However, this doesn’t stop people from celebrating. At midnight we have a big countdown from 10 to 1 – everyone joins in! On the stroke of midnight, we can enjoy one of the biggest fireworks displays in the world from Edinburgh Castle. Then everyone hugs and kisses each other – friends, family and strangers too – and shouts “HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!” After the fireworks, everyone heads inside to the pub. We sing Auld Lang Syne and raise a glass to welcome the new year.

If you ever have the chance to visit Scotland, and can bear the cold weather, I definitely recommend going there for New Year – it’s a party like no other!

私の出身地、私自身～講師の自己紹介
エディンバラでの年越し

多くの方がご存知の通り、私の出身地はエディンバラです。そしてエディンバラは新年のお祝いがとても有名です。実は、スコットランドでは、新年のことを「Hogmanay」と呼んでいます。

12月31日には、街のメイン通りでは大きなストリートパーティーが開催されます。道路では車は通行止めになり、人々で溢れます。ステージではバンドが大きな音で演奏し、ぎゅうぎゅうに混雑して動けないほどです。もちろん、年末のスコットランドはとても寒いです。人々は皆寒さで凍えていて、とて大きな冬用のジャケットを着て、帽子、マフラー、手袋をしています。でも、そんな凍えるほどの寒さですら、人々が新年を祝うのを止めることはできません。深夜には、皆が参加して、10秒前からカウントダウンします！時計の針がちょうど深夜0時を告げると、世界でも最大規模の大きさであるエディンバラ城からの花火を楽しめるのです。
それから人々は友達や家族、見知らぬ人ともハグやキスをして「ハッピーニューイヤー!!!」と叫びます。
花火が終わると人々はパブへ向かいます。私達はAuld Lang Syne(蛍の光)を歌い、グラスを掲げて新年を迎えます。

もしあなたがスコットランドを訪れる機会があって、寒い気候に耐えられるなら、新年に行ってみることを強くお勧めします、その他のパーティーとは全く違うものですよ！

“Happy Holidays” Vs. “Merry Christmas”

“Happy Holidays” Vs. “Merry Christmas”

These two phrases are used a lot in December! Everyone wishes each other well for the holiday period at the end of the year. In the UK, most people greet each other with “Merry Christmas” on Christmas Day. Even strangers passing in the street, or staff talking to customers in shops, will use this phrase. However, in America, did you know that most people don’t say this, and actually usually say “Happy Holidays”? You see, Christmas is a Christian holiday. However, America has a wide range of nationalities and religions – most US citizens aren’t Christian and don’t celebrate Christian traditions. Therefore, in the US and Canada, most people wish each other “Happy Holidays” – because this phrase is much more inclusive. It includes everyone, no matter what nationality or religion people are. Of course, it also includes all the people who don’t associate with any religion too. So, if you are spending any time over in the States at Christmas and New Year, remember to wish everyone “Happy Holidays!”

“ハッピホリデー” Vs “メリークリスマス”

これらの2つのフレーズは12月にとても多く使われます！皆が年末にお互いに良い休暇を過ごせるように願うのです。イギリスではほとんどの人がクリスマス当日には「メリークリスマス」と挨拶し合います。知らない人達同士が道ですれ違う時や、お店のスタッフがお客様に対してでさえ、実際にこのフレーズを使います。

しかしながらアメリカでは、ほとんどの人がこのフレーズを言わず、実際には「ハッピーホリデー」と言うのを知っていますか？見ての通り、クリスマスとはキリスト教の祝日です。しかしアメリカには幅広い国籍と宗教が存在していて、多くの人々はキリスト教徒ではなく、キリスト教の伝統をお祝いしません。そのためアメリカやカナダでは多くの人々がお互いの「ハッピーホリデー」を願うのです。

このフレーズはより包括的で、国籍や宗教に関わらず全ての人々に使えます。もちろんどんな宗教にも属さない人も。

もしあなたがクリスマスや年越しをアメリカで過ごす時には皆の「ハッピーホリデー」を願うことを覚えておいて下さいね！
