Christmas and New Years

This week’s subject is Christmas and New Years. We’re going to be talking about all the things we love about the holiday season. First, we’re going to talk about the various traditions that are popular in both western and Japanese culture at this time of year. Also, we’re going to share our habits and routines – so remember to come to class prepared to talk about what you usually do over the holidays. Where do you usually go? What do you usually eat? Do you decorate your house? Do you usually exchange cards and gifts? 

We’re also going to talk about how we used to celebrate Christmas and New Year when we were younger, and our favourite experiences and presents. 

Western and Japanese holidays at this time of year are so different, so let’s have fun comparing them and learning about each other’s holiday traditions!

今週のトピックはクリスマスとニューイヤーです。私達が大好きなこの休暇時期の、すべての事について話しましょう。

まず最初に、この時期の日本とヨーロッパ、それぞれのの文化における色々な伝統について話しましょう。習慣やルーティーンについてもシェアしますので、普段あなたがこの休暇中にやる事について、レッスンの中で話す準備をお忘れなく。通常はどこへ出かけますか？何を食べますか？部屋の飾り付けをしますか？カードやプレゼント交換をしますか？

stick to something

“To stick to something” means to do something that you promised or decided you would do, or that you believe you should do. It’s one of the expressions we’ll be using in the level 2 classes this weekend.

It’s common for many people to decide to go on a diet or start a new exercise regimen in the beginning of the new year but it’s also sadly very common for many not to stick to their diets or exercise regimens for long!

For me, as I’ve gotten older I’ve become better and better at sticking to what I’ve decided!

“To stick to something” とは、あなたが約束したり、やると決めた事、またはやるべきだと思っていることを実践する、という意味です。これは今週末のレベル2のレッスンの中で使われる表現のうちの1つです。

多くの人々が、新年の始めにダイエットや新しいエクササイズを始める事を決断しますが、悲しいことに彼らのダイエットやエクササイズが長くは続かないのもまた、とてもよくある事です！

私はと言うと、年を重ねるにつれて決断した事の実践できるようになって来ています。

Looking back on the year

Hello everyone,

The end of the year is approaching and now is as good a time as any to look back on the year and see what we have accomplished so far! This happens to also be the subject of our classes this weekend in Kensington so please reflect and prepare yourselves to share your experiences in class!

For level 1 and 2 students, Looking back on the year is a great class to review seasonal vocabulary and distinguish between the past simple and present perfect!

Make the most of it

Hello again,

In my blog yesterday I mentioned making the most of the year. We use the phrase “make the most of it” when we are trying to make something good out of an unpleasant situation.

For Example

“How was your holiday in Scotland?”
“Well the weather was awful, it rained non stop! We met a lot of nice people on our travels though and even though we didn’t get much fishing done we were able to make the most of it.”

“How was school?”
“Awful, I have so much homework to do this term!”
“Well, you better make the most of it now because it’ll only get harder from now on. “

Hope that comes in handy.

今日もよろしく。

昨日の私のブログで、この1年の中で最善を尽くすこと、について触れました。私達は、あまり望ましくない状況で良い結果を生み出そうとする時に 「make the most of it　最善をつくす」というフレーズを使います。

例えば

“How was your holiday in Scotland?”
（スコットランドでの休日はどうだった？）
“Well the weather was awful, it rained non stop! We met a lot of nice people on our travels though so even though we didn’t get much fishing done, we were able to make the most of it.”
（うーん、ひどい天気でずっと雨だったんだ！釣りはあまりできなかったけど、旅行中たくさんの素敵な人々に出会えたし、できる限り楽しんだよ。）

“How was school?”
(学校はどう？)
“Awful, I have so much homework to do this term!”
(ひどいもんだよ、今期はすごく宿題が多いんだ！)
“Well, you better make the most of it now because it’ll only get harder from now on. “
(そうなんだ、今できるだけ頑張っておくといいよ、なぜなら今からどんどん難しくなっていくだけだからね。)

Best of the year

Hello there everyone,

This weekend’s topic is one of my favourite classes because it gives us a chance to go through all the high points of the year, and although this year hasn’t been the most amazing in recent history I’m sure that if we look back at this year I’m sure we can find some high points to discuss!

In this class we will be mostly using the past tense and superlatives to talk about the best films we saw, restaurants we went to, places we visited, times we had and much much more. Sounds like a fun class to me!

dressed to kill / Vertically challenged

(TGIF- Thank God It’s Friday!)
Hello there, how was your week at the workplace? Are you looking forward to the weekend?

In our everyday English blog today, let’s look at 2 fashion/beauty/appearance related idioms:

  • dressed to kill … When someone is dressed to kill, they’re wearing fashionable, glamorous clothes intended to attract attention.

A: Moriko came to the party last night dressed to kill, wasn’t she?

B: Yeah. Everyone  noticed her gorgeous outfit.

  • Vertically challenged …This is humoristic way to refer to someone who’s short.

A: I can’t reach that shampoo bottle on the top shelve. Can you  give me a hand, Morinosuke.

B: I can see you’re a little vertically challenged, aren’t you?

Note: Please don’t use it to refer to someone who is very short due to some medical condition. It may be offensive.

みなさんこんにちは、今週はお仕事どうでしたか？週末が待ち遠しいですか？

今日の日常英会話ブログでは、ファッション/美容/外見に関する2つのイディオムをご紹介します。

  • kill …誰かの気を引いたり、魅了する為におしdressed to ゃれで豪華な服で着飾ること。

A: Moriko came to the party last night dressed to kill, wasn’t she?

    (昨晩のパーティーにモリ子はすごく着飾って来たでしょ？)

B: Yeah. Everyone  noticed her gorgeous outfit.
    (うん、みんな彼女のゴージャスな服装に注目していたよ）kill …誰かの気を引いたり、魅了する為におしdressed to ゃれで豪華な服で着飾ること。

  • Vertically challenged …背が低い人のことを表すユーモラな表現。

A: I can’t reach that shampoo bottle on the top shelve. Can              you give me a hand, Morinosuke.
（一番上の棚のシャンプーのボトルに届かないんだ、もりのすけ、手伝ってくれる？)
B: I can see you’re a little vertically challenged, aren’t you？
（君はちょっと背が低いんだね）

注意：この表現は、病気の症状などによって身長が低い方には使わないで下さい。失礼になるかもしれません。

This week’s subject is…“Fashion and Beauty” 

“Fashion and Beauty” It’s a brand new subject. We’re excited to unwrap it this week!
In this class we’re going to talk about

Getting ready-beauty and fashion routines we go through as we get ready for work /school/outing and how long it takes.  For example,  I usually get up at around 6:30 on weekdays, take a shower, shave and brush my teeth. I have breakfast, brush my hair and get dressed…

Fashion styles and clothing items–  What’s your favorite fashion style?   Well,  generally speaking, I dress casually. I like to wear something that feels comfortable.

Fashion tips- Please come to class ready to share some fashion tips and tricks with your classmates and or teachers.

I usually wear black leggings because…   You should….
Beauty products/trends and treatments

Language notes: wear,  put on, take off, dress (wear Vs dress)
As always, please do some preparation before the class.

Hey guys!

Here is a common idiom based on this week’s lesson:
 ‘Ok guys, let’s call it a day’.
It basically means ‘let’s finish for the day’, and we say it now and then when wrapping up activities, or work.

How to make most of your lessons

This week’s topic is “Possessions” – and it’s a great topic to talk about your own life. I recommend before class to do some brainstorming and think of your favourite possessions in your life. You don’t need to talk about big, expensive possessions like houses and cars. Try to think about the small things that make you happy every day. Perhaps it’s your favourite mug, or a family photo by your bed. Whatever it is, try to explain to your teacher what it is that you love so much about your favourite things.

For example, the favourite thing in my kitchen is my huge Starbucks mug! Usually in Japan, glasses, cups and mugs are quite small and, for me, a little inconvenient. It’s quite hard to find very big mugs in Japan. Luckily, I found a really big mug in Starbucks last year – so I bought it immediately! I love to drink a big cup of tea or coffee in the morning, and my mug is perfect for this. I usually don’t like big brands, but I think the black Starbucks logo on my mug looks quite cool. I think it cost about 1500 yen, and it really helps me to wake up in the morning!

I recommend thinking of the important possessions in your life, both big and small. Also, be sure to ask your teacher about their favourite possessions and join the discussion!

例えば私のキッチンの中のお気に入りは、とても大きなスターバックスのマグカップです！普段日本では、グラスやカップ、マグカップはとても小さくて、それは私にとって少し不便なのです。日本で大きいマグカップを探すのは結構大変です。でもラッキーなことに、私は昨年、スターバックスで本当に大きなマグカップを発見して即購入しました。私は朝、大きなマグカップで紅茶やコーヒーを飲むのが好きで、このマグカップは完璧なサイズでした。通常私はビッグブランドは好きではないのですが、このマグカップのスターバックスの黒のロゴはかなりイケてると思います。1500円の価値はあるし、このカップは私が朝起きることへの手助けにもなっているのです！
