“A picture is worth a thousand words.”

“A picture is worth a thousand words.”

In English we say “A picture is worth a thousand words.” This means that difficult or complex ideas can often easily be shown with just one picture. We hope each photo we share helps to brainstorm lots of ideas to talk about. Pictures help us to talk about many small details we often overlook or forget. Also, they help others to get a good feeling of a person, possession or place.

When I see a new photo, I also want to know about all the things I can’t see in a photo! For example, I often want to ask about whatever happened before or after the photo was taken. I want to know the background of the people in the photos, and why they are doing what they are doing. What’s missing? Why is it not there? Is this normal? How did the people in the photo feel at that time? Sometimes the picture can answer all these questions, and sometimes we need another thousand words to discuss everything! Either way, photos are great conversation starters, and a great tool to improve our English language skills.

英語で“A picture is worth a thousand words.”、これは、1枚の絵は千の言葉の価値がある、つまり「複雑で難しいアイデアは1000の言葉で説明するよりも1枚の絵を見せた方が伝わりやすい」という意味です。私達がシェアする１枚１枚の写真からたくさんの話題がひらめくといいですね。写真は、普段見逃したり、忘れてしまいがちなとても些細なことを話すのに役立ちますし、人や物、場所についての良い感情を与えることもできます。

私は新しい写真を見ると、写真を見ただけではわからないことまで知りたくなります！その写真を撮る前後に何が起こったのか、時々聞いてみたくなります。その写真に写っている人々のバックグラウンドについてや、彼らがやっていることの理由を知りたいと思うのです。何を失ったのか？なぜそこに無いのか？それは普通のことなのか？この写真の人々はその時どんな気持ちだったのか？

写真の中に答えを見つける時もありますし、何千もの言葉を使って話し合わなければいけない時もあります。どちらにしても、写真はすばらしい会話のきっかけであり、英語のスキルを上達させる素晴らしいツールなのです。

This week’s subject – Possessions

This week’s subject is “Possessions” – so we are going to be talking about all our favourite things, and why we like them so much! To do this, we need to think about why we decided to buy our favourite items (and not just any similar item). Is it the brand, the style, the colour, the design – why do you love your possessions? We also need to think about where and when we bought them, and how much they cost. Lastly, we need lots of great adjectives to describe our things, and to let others know how we feel about them.

Like many people, my favourite possessions are those given to me as a present by others. Recently, my brother gave me a big pair of Bluetooth headphones. He bought them on Amazon and sent them to me as a Christmas gift. In Japan, it’s important to be quiet at home – and my headphones definitely help with this! I use them regularly to watch football matches, films and to listen to music. They look heavy, but they’re actually quite light so they are comfortable to wear. I don’t care about what they look like, or brand names; what’s important to me is that they sound good, and luckily they do!

今週のレッスントピックは「持ち物」です。大好きなものについて、それらをとても好きな理由について話しましょう！　そのためには、どうしてこれらのものを買う決断をしたのか（そして、どうして似ているその他のものではダメなのか）について考える必要があります。ブランド、スタイル、色、それともデザインーどうしてあなたはこれらの物が好きなのでしょう？

それらを、いつ、どこで買って、最後に値段についても考えないといけません。たくさんのすばらしい形容詞を使ってあなたの持ち物について説明をして、他の人にそれらについてどう感じているかを教えてあげてください。

多くの人々と同様に、私のお気に入りの持ち物は人からプレゼントされた物です。最近では私の兄が大きなブルートゥースのヘッドフォンをくれました。彼はそれをアマゾンで買い、クリスマスプレゼントとして私に送ってくれました。日本では家では静かにすることが重要ですーだからこのヘッドフォンはとても役に立っています！私はサッカーや映画を観る時、音楽を聴く時はいつもこのヘッドフォンを使っています。見た目は重そうですが、実際にはとても軽いのでつけていて快適です。私は見た目やブランドネームにはこだわりません、重要なのは音がいいことで、幸運にもこのヘッドフォンの音は良かったです！

Everyday English – a one trick pony

Hello everyone,

Since our topic for this week is animals and pets, I’d like to introduce you to an animal related idiom. It’s “one trick pony” and it means that someone or something is only good for one particular purpose, or at doing one particular thing.

So for example 

Ex. Product A is great but we don’t want to be a one trick pony, we have got to be able to create something new and original.

Ex. Kensington is definitely not a one trick pony, we can teach adults and kids for a wide variety of targets at a very high level.

“one trick pony”
(ひとつの分野、ひとつのことでしか特別なスキルや能力を発揮できない人やものごと。)

例えば

Product A is great but we don’t want to be a one trick pony, we have got to be able to create something new and original.
(製品Aは素晴らしい、でも売り出しポイントがひとつだけではダメだ。私達は新しくて独創的なものを作り出さなければ。)

 Kensington is definitely not a one trick pony, we can teach adults and kids for a wide variety of targets at a very high level.

This week’s subject – Animals and Pets

This week’s subject is Animals and Pets, and well…. we’ll be talking about animals and pets. The conversation we’ll be quite different across the levels with the level 1 class to focus on some really useful grammar such as “when I was / when you were”,  “there is/are” and  second conditionals.

In level 2 classes we’ll do the above but also have a more expanded conversation about animals plus some pretty tough questions about animal ethics. In the level 3 classes we’ll focus on those tough questions and help our students express and expand their opinions while also learning some advanced vocab about animal idioms, animal sounds and animal groups!

今週は「動物とペット」というサブジェクトについて話しましょう。
会話の内容は、レベルによって異なります。

レベル１のクラスでは、 “when I was / when you were”,  “there is/are” のような、とても便利ないくつかの文法と、セカンドコンディショナル (仮定法過去)に注目します。

レベル２のクラスでは、上記の内容に加え、動物と動物の権利に関しての難しい質問についても会話を広げましょう。

レベル３のクラスでは、これらの難しい質問に焦点を当て、生徒さんの表現や意見を広げるお手伝いをします。会話を通して、動物に関するイディオム、動物の鳴き声や動物の属性など上級者向けのボキャブラリーについても学んで行きましょう！

Don’t count your chickens until they’ve hatched

Hello there everyone,

We are giving advice in this weekend’s classes so here is a phrase we use to give people advice. This means don’t make plans for money/ things you expect to happen in the future until they have actually occurred. 

Example

“I hear we are getting a huge bonus this winter. I’m buying myself a new car.”

“Don’t count your chickens till they’ve hatched.” They told us the same thing last year but in the end we only got half the amount!”

Hope that comes in handy.

やぁみなさん、こんにちは。

私たちは週末のレッスンでアドバイスについて学びました。そこで今日はアドバイスをする時に使えるフレーズをお伝えします。

Don’t count your chickens until they’ve hatched.

これは、将来のお金や物事など、期待していることが本当に起こるまではあれこれと計画するな、という意味です。

例
“I hear we are getting a huge bonus this winter. I’m buying myself a new car.”
（今年の冬はボーナスがたくさん出るって聞いたから、新しい車を買うつもりだよ。）

Hi there, TGIF! (Thank God It’s Friday!)
Any plans for the weekend? Are you planning to get out of town and enjoy the great outdoors somewhere?

In our everyday English blog we’re going to look at two expressions

  • as big as all outdoors

This phrase means very large.
A: Have you seen the CEO’s new yacht?
B: No, I haven’t. What is it like?
A: It’s as big as all outdoors! 

  • get away from it all

It means to go to a different place usually far away from  your workplace, city or stressful environment.
We love living in the city but sometimes we  need to get away from it all and go to the mountains and enjoy the great outdoors.
My idea of getting away from it all is going fishing with my son on the Hudson river.

  • as big as all outdoors　「途方もなく大きい」

Go to a different place usually far away from  your workplace, city or stressful environment.
　(職場や都会などのストレスがたまる場所から遠く離れて、どこか違う場所へ行こう。)

My idea of getting away from it all is going fishing with my son on the Hudson river.
　(私の日常の煩わしさから逃れる方法は、息子と一緒にハドソン川で釣りをすることだ)

私たちは街に住むのが好きです、でもたまには日常の煩わしさから離れて、山にでも行って、素晴らしい自然を楽しむ必要があると思いませんか。

Hello everyone, how’s it going?

“The Great Outdoors” is our topic this week!
Do you enjoy spending some time in the great outdoors? I certainly do.
In this lesson, we talk about outdoor activities and places where we can do those activities for example go rafting or kayaking on the river/go fishing at the lake…
We’ll also learn names of places of natural beauty e.g. waterfalls, volcanic mountains, valleys and others and tell our classmates or teachers about the most fascinating/beautiful/breathtaking places we’ve been to.
(Share stories about our outdoor experiences)
And what next…What outdoor activities would we like to try or places of natural beauty we’d love to visit in the future.

Present perfect …..past tense
Have you ever been on a Safari?
Yes, I have. I went on a Safari in South Africa and Namibia a few years ago.

Those were the days / The good old days

Do you ever find yourself looking back at a time in the past with fond memories, wishing you were there instead of here? Well, I have two idioms you can use to sum all that up:

‘I remember playing football in the park, those were the days’
– We remember that great time of playing football and we kind of wish that we could do it again in the same way-

‘Do you remember the good old days when Freddos cost 10p’
– ‘Freddos’ is a small chocolate bar in the U.K which is fated to cause controversy whenever its price is inevitably increased. –

Whenever it does increase in price some people will reminisce on a simpler time when things weren’t so expensive.
I hope you enjoy using those idioms.

Those were the days / The good old days

みなさんは、甘い思い出のつまった過去を振り返って、ここではなく「そこ」にいれたら、、なんて考えることはありませんか？そこで、それを全部まとめるのに使える２つの慣用句をご紹介します。

「公園でサッカーをしていたのを思い出すな、（ those were the days＝）それがあの頃だったんだ」
ーサッカーをしていた素晴らしい時を思い出し、また同じ様にそれができたら良いのに、と思っていることを表す文ー

「Freddosが10ペンスだった、あの古き良き日々（the good old days)を覚えているかい？」ーFreddosは、イギリスで売っている小さなチョコレートバーですが、その値段が仕方なく上げられると、必ず論争が起こるのです。人によっては、その価格が上がる度に、もっとシンプルで、物がそんなに高くなかった時代のことを思い出すでしょう。

この慣用句を楽しく使っていただければと思います。
