What does “under the weather” mean in English?

Hello everyone,

Are you all enjoying 梅雨? If you don’t know how to say 梅雨 in English please check Jaimie’s blog from last week here.

Now, I’d like to introduce an expression we often use when we are feeling ill or generally unwell. The expressions is “under the weather” and we use it as below

Ex.
T: Hey Jaimie, how are you doing?
J: Hey Tim, I’m a little bit under the weather actually. I have a cough and a headache.
T: I’m very sorry to hear that, shouldn’t you be at home?

梅雨を楽しくお過ごしですか？　もし梅雨を英語でどういったらよいか分からないときは先週のジェイミーのブログをこちらからチェックしてくださいね。

さて、今日は具合が悪かったりなんとなく不調のときに私たちがよく使っている表現をご紹介したいと思います。その表現とは “under the weather”で、次のように使います。

【例】
T:　やぁジェイミー、元気？
J:　やぁティム、実はちょっと調子が悪くて。咳がでるし頭痛もするし。
T:　それは良くないね。家にいたほうがいいんじゃない？

Hello there everyone,

This isn’t technically a blog about food but since we are talking about money this weekend I’d like to show you this food related idiom.

Bread and Butter

This is what we use when we talk about a person’s main source of income.

Taxi drivers get a fair bit of trade from local customers but their bread and butter is pick ups to and from the airport.

食べ物について話そう！ – 「飲み放題・食べ放題」は英語では何というでしょう？

“Tabe-Hodai” “Nomi-Hodai” in English

Hello guys,

A super useful expression in Japanese is adding 放題 to something and making it unlimited. In English we say “all you can ….” or “you can ….. as much/many…. as you want”

So for an example if an Izakaya has a 食べ放題 for 4,500yen in English we would say “It’s all you can eat for 4,500yen” or “you can eat as much as you want for 4,500yen”. 飲み放題 is similar as we say “all you can drink” or “you can drink as much as you want”.

Don’t forget that we at Kensington have a 学び放題 for online group lessons. That would translate to “You can take as many classes as you want for 8,800yen/month”. That’s amazing value!!

こんにちは。

日本語できわめて便利な表現は何かに「放題」を付け加えて上限なしにするものです。英語では私たちは “all you can …” “you can … as much/many … as you want” などと言います。

ですので例えば居酒屋が4500円で食べ放題をやっているとすると、英語で私たちは “It’s all you can eat for 4,500yen (4500円で全部食べられます)”　あるいは “you can eat as much as you want for 4,500yen (4500円で欲しいだけたくさん食べられます)”と言うでしょう。飲み放題も同じように “all you can drink (全部飲めます)”　あるいは “you can drink as much as you want (欲しいだけたくさん飲めます)”と言います。

ケンジントンにもオンライングループレッスンの「学び放題」があることを忘れてはいけませんね。これを英語に訳すと “You can take as many classes as you want for 8,800yen/month (8800円で欲しいだけたくさんのレッスンが受けられます)” になるでしょう。すごくお得ですね！

Protests, demonstrations and riots in English

Hello everyone,

As most of you probably know, the tragic killing of George Floyd sparked anger across the United states and all over the world. Such events in the year of 2020 are unacceptable and we should all stand in solidarity with our black sisters and brothers against racism.

These are some ways to talk about the events in English.

The killing of an unarmed blacked man sparked a wave of demonstrations.
Most demonstrations have been peaceful but there were some riots and looting.
People have been protesting against racism all over the world.
Many celebrities have spoken out against racism.

皆さんこんにちは。

おそらくたいていの方がご存じのように、ジョージ・フロイド氏の悲劇的な殺害は合衆国全土、そして世界中に怒りを引き起こしました。2020年という年にこのような事件が起こることは受け入れがたく、レイシズム（racism 人種差別）に対して黒人のみなさんと一緒に立ち上がるべきでしょう。

この事件を英語で話すには、次のような例をご覧ください。

【例】非武装の黒人男性の殺害はデモの急激な高まりを引き起こしました。
【例】デモ参加者の対部分は平和的態度でしたが、暴動や略奪行為もありました。
【例】人々はレイシズム（racism 人種差別）に対し世界中で抗議しています。
【例】多くの有名人たちがレイシズム（racism 人種差別）について意見を表明しています。

You may be asking yourself how to say this in English and the answer is…
a cash handout

“ Yesterday I applied for the cash handout from the government. It should be in the bank next week!”

食べ物について話そう！ – a full English breakfast

If you ever have the chance to visit the UK I really recommend you go to a place that serves a good full English breakfast. It usually has eggs, bacon, sausages, baked beans in tomato sauce, mushrooms, tomatoes and black pudding ( a kind of blood sausage with oats) and is served with buttered toast and tea. It is totally delicious but be warned it is very filling and extremely unhealthy, it may be the reason the Brits have such short lifespans!

If you do happen to find yourself there it is usually written on the menu as “ Full English”

もしあなたがイギリスを訪れる機会があるとしたら、本物の「フルイングリッシュブレクファスト（full English breakfast）」を出してくれるところに行かれることを心からお勧めします。これにはたいてい卵、ベーコン、ソーセージ、トマトソース煮のベイクトビーンズ、マッシュルーム、トマト、ブラックプディング（オーツ麦に血液を混ぜたソーセージの一種です）が盛られていて、バタつきのトーストと紅茶が添えられます。すばらしく美味しいのですが、とてもおなかいっぱいになりますし、きわめて不健康だとご注意しておきます。イギリス人たちの寿命があんなに短いのはそのせいかもしれませんね！

たまたまそういう場所にいあわせたら、メニューにはたいてい「Full English」と書いてありますから。

日常英会話レッスン – a State of emergencyとは

Hello there everyone,

This isn’t really everyday English but it is good news so I think it’s okay. A lot of my students have been asking me how to say 緊急事態宣言が解除されました in English over the last few days so here goes.

Firstly the 緊急事態宣言　is known as a state of emergency declaration in English and there are many ways to say 解除する in English such as cancel, release and more, but the best way to say it in this case is lift so..

“The state of emergency has been lifted in most of Japan.” is the best way to say this.

日常英会話レッスン – Struggle with something の意味：「～に苦戦中です」

Hello everyone,

Gradually many of you have access to your student files. In those you’ll see sometimes an expression we use when someone has difficulty with something. It’s “struggle with something”.

For example,

Ex. She struggled a little bit with the changing of verb tenses

This means that the student had difficulty with the verb tenses. That changing the verb tenses was a little bit difficult for her.

日常英会話レッスン – 　「～に苦戦中です」英語では？

皆さんこんにちは。
だんだん受講生の皆さんの多くが受講生ファイルにアクセスできるようになってきています。そのファイルの中で、何かに苦労しているときに私たちが使うある表現を目にされることでしょう。それは “struggle with something（何かに対して苦戦している）”というものです。

例えば
【例】彼女は動詞の時制の変化にちょっと苦戦中です。
これはその受講生さんが動詞の時制に苦労している、という意味です。動詞の時制を変化させることは彼女には少し難しかったのですね。
