Hello there everyone! This week’s phrase is “Make yourself at home”. We use this when we are inviting someone in to our home to make them feel welcome and comfortable. 7

For example

“Hi Bill, come on in and make yourself at home. Would you like something to drink?”

日常英会話レッスン – A blockbuster film

Hello everyone,

A blockbuster originally meant a very powerful bomb that would be able to destroy a whole block of streets during World War 2. It’s meaning is far less sinister these days, nowadays we use it to talk about films, books, or other products that are a great commercial success.

Ex.

The Lord of the Rings books were adapted on film in three blockbuster movies.

The new Disney film is surely going to be a blockbuster.

A blockbusterとは、もともと、第二次世界大戦中に街路のブロック全体を破壊できるとても強力な爆弾を意味しました。

My high school year one teacher was a total alcoholic and all the students would be walking on eggshells around him in the mornings until his hangover wore off.

日常英会話レッスン – Easy on the

Hello everyone,

Since our topic this week in our Fukuoka schools is fast food, I’ll introduce you to an informal expression we use quite usually at fast food restaurants. It’s “easy on the …” and it means “don’t take or use too much of something”.

For example:

“Easy on the mustard, please.” means “please don’t put too much mustard.”

“Easy on the cheese man!” means “please don’t eat too much of the cheese!”

Ex. After I gave him my number, he made a habit of calling me every day after work.
Ex. I make a habit of checking line messages from our students every day when I wake up.

Hello there, since we are in full summer mode, here is a nice expression for you.

“ A little ray of sunshine” means someone who is bright and happy and somehow always makes people feel good.

Example.

“My daughter is a little ray of sunshine in our house in the mornings. The rest of us are so grumpy, but she is always singing and dancing around”

We very often use it sarcastically.

I just CAN’T WAIT to see Jaimie in the Akasaka school on Sundays, he’s a little ray of sunshine, SO fresh and chatty and FULL of positivity!

Hi everyone,

Since we are going to be talking about social media this weekend, I’ll introduce you a word we hear very often on social media sites and forums. It’s “troll” and it means someone that makes a deliberately offensive or provocative online post.

Online users many times hide behind their anonymity to insult others and to start arguments. I have no idea why anyone would spend his time that way other than they are probably living very sad lives.

When you encounter a troll we usually say “Don’t feed the trolls.” which means do not reply to them, as this is what they want.

So “don’t feed the trolls” people!

もしあなたがトロールに遭遇するとき、私たちは通常 “トロールに餌を与えないでください”と言います。

Hi there!

This weekend’s topic is cinema so here are some expressions we use when talking about a film’s success.

a box office hit= very successful in the cinema

“Titanic” was one of the biggest box office hits of the nineties.

a box office flop= unsuccessful at the cinema

Despite its huge budget, the film was a box office flop and left the production company with a massive deficit.

straight to dvd= not expected to be successful in cinemas and only released on dvd

The “ American Pie” franchise has now given up on cinema releases and just makes films that go straight to dvd.

例）フランチャイズ社の「American Pie」は映画を出すことを諦め、そのままDVDにする映画を作成している。

日常英会話レッスン – black sheep of the family

Hello everyone,

Our topic this week is family so today we are going to introduce you to a very usual idiom we use when talking about a somewhat unsuccessful member of a family. It’s “the black sheep” and it means someone who embarrasses a group or family because the person is different or has gotten into trouble.

Who’s the black sheep of your family? I think that the black sheep of my family is my brother, he’s a nice person but he has a very short temper and ends up doing or saying really embarrassing stuff. But who knows, he may be saying the same thing about me 🙂
