Since our topic this week is TV shows, I’d like to introduce you some very useful adjectives you can use to describe them.

Funny / Hilarious
When we find something very funny, we can say it’s hilarious.

Interesting / Fascinating
When we find something very interesting, we can use the word fascinating.

Exciting/ Thrilling
When we find something very exciting, we use the word thrilling.

Sad/ Tragic
When we find something very sad, we use the word tragic.

Scary / Terrifying
When we find something very scary, we use the word terrifying.

Hello there everyone, since we are using idioms this weekend, I’ll show you a couple of phrases you can use instead of saying I don’t have any ideas.

Nothing comes to mind/ I can’t come up with anything.

For example.

I can’t come up with anything good for my business blog this week.

“Any idea what we can do this weekend since the weather is going to be so bad?”
“ Nope, nothing comes to mind right now.”

日常英会話レッスン – “Find”

This week we are going to talk about “Careers and Companies” and one of the focuses of our level 2 class is using the verb “find”. “Find” has some different meanings that the one we are going to focus on this week is “to think or feel a particular way about someone or something”.

ex. I don’t find him an easy person to get on with.

ex. I find my work very stressful.

ex. I find living in the city so relaxing.

日常英会話レッスン I’m fine thank you and you! Long time no see

Hello there everyone.

I often find that my students have some expression imprinted on their brains from school but don’t use them very naturally, two good examples of these are..
“I’m fine thank you, and you” and “Long time no see”

Both of these expressions are perfectly natural but people seem to want to fire them out at super high speeds making them sound unnatural and very practiced. We also have some alternatives so try to mix it up a bit please.

I’m good thanks, and you?
I’m pretty good thanks, yourself?
I’m fine thanks, how about you?

It’s been so long!
It’s been ages!
I haven’t seen you in so long!
It’s been a while!

Give those a try instead.

たまに教室に来られた際に昔学校で覚えたような挨拶をされることがあります。しかしそれはあまり自然ではないため今回は2つの良い例をご紹介します。

これらの表現はどちらも自然なものですがお決まりの言葉のように聞こえてしまいます。
ですので他にも簡単に使える表現法がありますので少しミックスして使ってみてください。

良い感じですあなたは？　I’m good thanks, and you?
まあまあ良いです。あなたは？　I’m pretty good thanks, yourself?
問題ないです。あなたは？　I’m fine thanks, how about you?

お久しぶりです　It’s been so long!
ずいぶん久しぶりですね　It’s been ages!
ご無沙汰してます　I haven’t seen you in so long!
最後に会ってからずいぶん経ちますね　It’s been a while!

日常英会話レッスン – must

Hello,

“Must” is a modal verb with some different meanings. We are going to use it in our classes this week as in the following example.

Ex.

・I have never been to the Grand Canyon but I’d love to go. It must be so beautiful.

In the sentence above “must” is used to show that something is very likely, probable, or certain to be true.

Other examples

・Jaimie’s been teaching all day – he must be tired.

・There aren’t any markers left – we must have used them all.

・When you got lost in the forest you must have been very frightened.

・”You must know Henry.” “No, I don’t.”

Hello there!

Since we are talking about clauses this weekend I thought I’d show you the difference between so and because. Basically they mean the same thing but how they are used is important.

Because

When we use because, the reason for something comes in the second part of the sentence.

I went to the bank because I had no money.

With so, the reason comes first.

I had no money, so I went to the bank.

If you put them the wrong way round the result is disastrous.

I had no money because I went to the bank.
銀行にいったからお金がなかった。

今回は“so”と“because”の違いをお伝えします。基本的には意味は同じですが使い方で意味が変わることもあります。

・because
これを使うとき、その理由は文末にきます

I went to the bank because I had no money.
(＝私はお金が無かったので銀行に行った)

・so
これは文の最初にきます

I had no money, so I went to the bank.
(＝お金が無かったので、銀行に行った)

使い方を間違えると下記のように全く異なる意味となりますのでご注意ください。

I had no money because I went to the bank.
銀行にいったからお金がなかった。

Today I’d like to introduce a word that we haven’t taught enough of in Kensington. It’s “right” and we put it at the end of sentences to check agreement, approval or confirmation.

Ex. You are going to the party in Tenjin today, right?
Ex. You’ve never been abroad, right?

Hello there everyone, this weekend’s topic in Akasaka, Ropponmatsu, Nishijin, and Yakuin in bucket list.

The reason we call it a bucket list is because “kick the bucket” is an idiom for die, so the bucket list is a list of things we want to do before we die. We also use the phrase “ dying to…” which means something you really want to do.

For example.

“I’m dying to try skydiving one day, it looks like so much fun!”

Hello,

Today I’d like to show you three very easy ways to continue a conversation.

1) How about you?
How about you is an excellent way to ask somebody back the same question.
Ex. What do you like to do in your free time?
I like to go running. How about you?

2) Do you like….?
“Do you like…..” is also an excellent way to continue a conversation.
Ex. What did you do yesterday?
I went to an Italian restaurant. Do you like Italian?

3) Have you ever …..?
Same for “have you ever”
Ex. What are you doing this Golden week?
I’m going to Yame. Have you ever been there?

All these expressions are both very very easy to use and also really useful to ask back and continue a conversation, so please use them!

How about youの意味としては、相手に同じ質問を聞き返すときに使用します。

例えば…
・暇なとき何をするのが好きですか？
・ランニングをするのが好きです。あなたは？

2) Do you like….?
“Do you like…..” の意味としては、こちらも会話を続けるために使える表現法のひとつです。

例えば…
・昨日は何をしましたか？
・昨日はイタリアンレストランに行きました。イタリアンは好きですか？

3) Have you ever …..?
“have you ever”と同じ意味です。

例えば…
・ゴールデンウィークは何しますか？
・八女に行きます。八女に行ったことはありますか？

これらの表現は非常に使いやすく、会話を続ける際にとても役に立ちます。
