Hello everyone, how’s your week going? It’s December and as everyone knows…Xmas and the New year’s holidays are fast approaching! So, the subject in most of our classes this week will be Christmas and New Year’s.
Please prepare to share with you classmates and teachers how you usually celebrate Xmas and the new year’s holidays, Xmas in your childhood and plans for this Xmas and new year’s holidays.
Language/grammar note:
 Adverbs of frequency (always, usually, often,.. occasionally, hardly ever…)
I hardly ever go to church on Xmas.
I often go to the community mochitsuki held on December 27th every year at an elementary school.
used to/still/anymore
When I was a kid, I used to go to church on Xmas. But now I don’t go to church anymore. Some of my siblings still do.

【使える単語やフレーズ】

●頻度の副詞：「always（いつも）」「usually（通常）」「often（しばしば、よく）」「occasionally（時折）」「hardly ever（めったに…しない）」

I hardly ever go to church on Xmas.
(私はめったにクリスマスに教会に行くことはありません。)

I often go to the community mochitsuki held on December 27th every year at an elementary school.
(毎年12月27日に小学校で行われる地域の餅つきによく行きます。)

When I was a kid, I used to go to church on Xmas. But now I don’t go to church anymore. Some of my siblings still do.

Doing good and doing well

Hi,
Doing good and doing well sound similar, but actually mean different things.

When we say “I’m doing good”, it means you are doing something that we can say is a good thing. However, when we say “I’m doing well”, it means that you are good/healthy/fine.

A good way to remember this is:
Superman does good. You’re doing well.

「doing good」と「doing well」は似ているように聞こえますが、実際には異なることを意味します。

「I’m doing good」とは、人が良いことだと言えることをあなたがしているということです。
しかし、「I’m doing well」とは、あなたがgood（大丈夫、元気）／healthy（健康）／fine（大丈夫、元気）であることを意味します。

これを覚える良い方法はこちらです。

Looking Back on the Year

Hi,
For me, it’s interesting looking back on the year of 2022. I finally settled into living in the city, as before I lived in Asakura for five years. I also achieved many of my basic goals like writing on my blog, regular exercise, healthy eating and some financial goals too – in fact, I exceeded them!

I think it was a good year for me, but for the world it was a turbulent year. Economically we’re moving into harder times because of the pandemic and the Russian conflict, and I think people are generally much more worried now about a lot of things.

Personally, I’m fine and I think the future will be fine. My thinking is always about what I can do to make my life the best it can be, not what the world is like, because that is out of my control. I hope you think the same.

こんにちは。
私にとって2022年を振り返るのは興味深いことです。
朝倉に5年間住んでいた時と同じように、ようやく福岡に落ち着きました。
また、ブログを書くこと、定期的な運動、健康的な食事、いくつかの経済的目標など基本的な目標の多くも達成しました。
実際にはそれらを超えました!

私にとっては良い年だったと思いますが世界にとっては激動の年でした。
経済的にはパンデミックとロシアの紛争により困難な時期に移行しており、人々は多くのことについてとても心配していると思います。

個人的には問題はなく、将来も大丈夫だと思います。
私は世界がどうなっているかではなく、自分の人生を最高のものにするために何ができるかについて常に考えています。あなたもそうだといいな。

How to use “not the best of”

Hello everyone,
Our topic for this week is “Best of the Year” so I would like to share with you an expression using the word “best”.

It’s “not the best of (noun)” and it’s a soft and natural way of saying that something is not good. For example: “That’s not the best of ideas”. Please be careful to use the noun in its plural form. “That’s not the best of ideas” (we say ideas NOT idea).

Ex. I didn’t have the best of weeks last week. My cat died and I fractured my arm. I really miss my cat 🙁

not the best of + 名詞

これは、何かが良くないことを柔らかく自然に伝える言い方です。
例えば、That’s not the best of ideas. (それはあまり良いアイディア[最高のアイディア]ではありません。)

名詞を複数形で言うことにご注意ください。
That’s not the best of ideas.
「idea」ではなく「ideas」を使います。

[例文]

I really love our subject for this week. I think it’s because I love making lists of things and I especially love making lists of my favourite things! There are many questions to think about and I always find that this class works best when the students have come prepared with things to talk about. Example, the best book you read this year or the best movie you watched this year, the best place you travelled to this year and so on!!!
It’s a perfect opportunity for you to talk about your favourite things.

「worth（価値がある）」の使い方【日常英会話】

worth / not worth

Hello there everyone! 

In this weekend’s classes we will be giving recommendations and one thing my students always seem troubled by is the phrase “worth…” . We use this phrase in both the negative and the positive to give our opinion on a range of things and it is used in combination with a verb. 

Example

“Have you seen the new Top Gun film? I can’t make up my mind whether to go and see it in the cinema or not.” 

“Yeah, I have. It was okay. Worth watching at least but I don’t think it’s worth spending the money to go and see it in the cinema. I’d wait for it to come out on Netflix if I were you.”

今週末のクラスではおすすめを提案する練習をしますが、提案する際に私の生徒さんがいつも悩まされているように見えるのは、「worth（価値がある）」という言葉です。
この言葉は否定形と肯定形の両方で使うことができ、さまざまなことについて意見を述べることができます。
また、「worth」は動詞と組み合わせて使用​​されます。

[例文]

Have you seen the new Top Gun film? I can’t make up my mind whether to go and see it in the cinema or not.
(新しいトップガンの映画を見ましたか？映画館に行って見るかどうか決めかねています。)

Yeah, I have. It was okay. Worth watching at least but I don’t think it’s worth spending the money to go and see it in the cinema. I’d wait for it to come out on Netflix if I were you.
(ええ、見ましたよ。悪くなかったです。少なくとも見る価値はありますが、お金を払って映画館に行って見る価値があるとは思いません。私があなただったら、Netflixで公開されるのを待ちます。)

“Get a health check”

Health in daily conversation, especially when booking appointments, can be a bit tricky for second language learners, so here are some useful phrases if you ever need to do something health wise in English:

  • – I’d like to do some bloodwork – this is a way to say you want a blood test done.
  • – I’d like a general check up – this is just a general routine health check, includes many things!
  • – Can I get an X-ray on my ____? – This is requesting an x-ray for a specific part of your body.

There are many others, but these are some basic ones that you can use for common requests.

Hi Everyone,

This week’s subject is fashion and beauty, which for me is…not exactly an easy subject!

Fashion wise, I take care of myself and go for a simple, casual style – but according to many of my friends, I look great in formal wear. I really don’t like formal wear however, so I stick to my usual well fitted shirts, long sleeves, shorts, pants and dark colours, especially purple.

When it comes to beauty care, I just focus on eating good food, getting lots of sun, sleeping well and drinking a lot of water. I don’t think you need much else!

Hey everyone,

There are so many expressions using the word “go” in English and they come in many different patterns. One of them is “go on a …” 

Here are some expressions commonly used,
Go on a date, go on a trip, go on a diet, go on a picnic, go on a business trip, go on a hike etc……

Ex. I’m going on a date this weekend with my girlfriend. Do you know any good places in Tenjin?

Ex. Mr. Sonoda went on a business trip to Fukuoka for 3 days. He is looking for a good location for an English school.
