Going Out

Hey everyone,

This week’s subject will be Going Out and is a great class for basic grammar review. We are going to be practicing the 4 basic tenses (Present Simple, Past Simple, Future, Present Perfect) and use the verb “go” in a variety of expressions.

It’s a very useful class especially for our lower level students but also good grammar review for our more advanced speakers.

Hello everyone, since we are discussing the topic of luck this weekend I thought I’d introduce this very commonly used phrase. “As luck would have it” is just a different way of saying “luckily”.

Example

“I tried and tried to find my daughter’s birthday present online but it was completely sold out. As luck would have it though I managed to get what she wanted in our local supermarket so that’s one less thing to stress about.”

“I was really nervous before leaving for my homestay in Canada but as luck would have it one of my classmates is staying with the same family as me.”

「As luck would have it」

これは「luckily（運良く、幸運にも）」の別の言い方です。

[例文]

I tried and tried to find my daughter’s birthday present online but it was completely sold out. As luck would have it though I managed to get what she wanted in our local supermarket so that’s one less thing to stress about.
(娘の誕生日プレゼントをオンラインで探してみましたが、売り切れでした。しかし運良く彼女が欲しかったものを地元のスーパーマーケットで手に入れることができたので、ストレスを感じていることが一つ減りました。)

I was really nervous before leaving for my homestay in Canada but as luck would have it one of my classmates is staying with the same family as me.
(カナダへホームステイに行く前はとても緊張していましたが、幸運にもクラスメートの一人が私と同じ家族の家に滞在します。)

We will be talking about whether we consider ourselves to be lucky or not and why, talking about lucky or unlucky experiences we have had in the past and discussing superstitions. Sounds like an action packed class to me.

Hi everyone, any big plans for the weekend?

Sticking to the Halloween theme, our everyday English expression this week is a slang

“ghosted or be ghosted or ghost someone” To be ghosted is when your friend, acquaintance, lover etc suddenly cuts off communication with you. You can also be ghosted when you arrange to meet with someone somewhere and they don’t come and don’t communicate why.

A: Where’s the new receptionist?
B: He hasn’t showed up since we hired him last week. He hasn’t called or texted and he’s not answering my calls and texts!
A: I can’t believe he has ghosted us!

ハロウィンに関連して、今週の日常英会話表現はスラングである「ghosted」「be ghosted」「ghost someone」です。
「ghosted」とは、友人、知人、恋人などが突然あなたとの連絡を断つことです。
また、どこかで誰かと会う約束をしたのに、彼らが来ず、理由を話してくれない場合にも、「ghosted」となります。

A: Where’s the new receptionist?

「different ballpark」ってどういう意味？違う野球場？！ – まったく異なる【日常英会話】

“ballpark”

A word I used on Tuesday’s blog post is “ballpark”. What does it mean?

Basically, think of a baseball field, and someone hitting a ball out of the field. That means the ball is in a different “ballpark”.

Now imagine difficulty between Eiken 3 and Eiken 1. They are in totally different “ballparks” – as in, their difference in skill and difficulty are huge, and not comparable.

That’s what “ballpark” means. You can say “They are in the same ballpark”, which means similar – or you can say “In a different ballpark”, which means very different.

基本的には野球場を想像してみてください。そして、誰かが野球場の外へボールを打ったとします。これは、ボールが別の野球場(ballpark)にあることを意味します。

ここで、英検3級と英検1級の難易度を想像してみてください。
これらはまったく異なる「ballpark」にあります。
つまり、スキルと難易度の違いは非常に大きく、比較することはできません。

それが「ballpark」の意味です。
「They are in the same ballpark」と言うことができます。これは似ていることを意味します。
または、「In a different ballpark」と言うことができます。これは全く異なることを意味します。

Hi Everyone,

This week’s subject is “giving advice”, which is something I have many opinions on.

Honestly, I don’t really like to give advice and I never give advice unless I am asked. Likewise, I don’t like it when people give me advice when I never ask for it. It bothers me quite a lot.

That said, it’s sometimes important to do it and the way we do it is really vital. We have to choose our words carefully on some topics and be very mindful of the other person’s goals. When I studied counselling I learned a lot about it, but in counselling you aren’t supposed to give advice at all.

それは私をかなり困らせます。

とはいえ、それを行うことが重要な場合もあります。そして、その方法はきわめて重大です。
話題によっては慎重に言葉を選ぶ必要があり、相手の目標に非常に注意を払う必要があります。
カウンセリングを勉強したときは、いろいろなことを学びましたが、カウンセリングでは、アドバイスをしてはいけません。

Shoot the breeze

Hello there,

Since we are talking about making small talk in our classes this weekend, I thought I’d introduce this phrase to you. “Shoot the breeze” just means to make small talk or casual conversation.

Example.

“I was almost late for work yesterday!”

“What happened?”

“I met an old friend of mine in the supermarket and we spent a bit of time shooting the breeze. Before I knew it an hour had passed and I had to get a taxi into work!”

Hope that comes in handy.

Making Small Talk

Hi there

This weekend the topic for our classes is making small talk. This may sound like an easy class but I have found that it actually requires a fair bit of work so be ready! The aim of the classes this weekend is to keep a natural conversation going just like we would for example at work on a Monday morning. We will discuss the weather, complementing each other’s amazing fashion choices, chatting about the previous weekend’s events, and talking about upcoming plans. In part two we will need our imaginations switched on because we will be catching up with an old friend, discussing our lives in general, work, studies, and more!
