Full sentences

Hey guys,

Something that can be a struggle for students, especially beginners, can be making full sentences. Here is an example:

Liam: “What did you do yesterday?”
Student: “I went to the cinema”
Liam: “Who did you go with?”
Student: “My daughter.”

This is actually an ok and fairly common thing to do. Like with Japanese, we can omit things that are obvious. But we encourage students to try and use full sentences when learning, as it is better for learning the language. Of course, it’s not a problem to do sometimes, but if you notice it becoming a habit, it’s a good thing to try and snap out of. 

A simple tip is to remember to start with the subject, followed by the verb. Here is the same example again:

Liam: “What did you do yesterday?”
Student: “I went to the cinema”
Liam: “Who did you go with?”
Student: “I went with my daughter.”

皆さんを、特に初心者の方を苦戦させる事として、省略せずに文章を作ることがあります。

例えば
Liam: “What did you do yesterday?”
（昨日何をしていましたか？）

Student: “I went to the cinema”
（映画に行きました。）

Liam: “Who did you go with?”
（誰と一緒に行きましたか？）

Student: “My daughter.”
（娘です）

実際にはこれでも大丈夫ですし、かなりよくあることです。
日本人同士なら、文の一部を省略しても意味が通じます。
しかし、学習中の生徒さんがより良く言語を学ぶためには、省略せずに文章を作ることをおススメします。
もちろん時々は問題ありません、でももし、それが癖になってしまっていると気づいたら、そこから切り替えてみるのはとても良いことです。

簡単なヒントとして、「最初に主語、その後に動詞を続ける」と覚えて下さい。
先ほどの例をもう一度。

Liam: “What did you do yesterday?”
（昨日何をしていましたか？）

Student: “I went to the cinema”
（映画に行きました。）

Liam: “Who did you go with?”
（誰と一緒に行きましたか？）

Student: “I went with my daughter.”
（娘と一緒に行きました。）

singing in the shower

This week’s topic is “Music” – so I thought I’d share a music related study tip. Many students feel they can’t practice speaking with the flashcards as much as they’d like to before class – because they don’t have a speaking partner at home. Well, with a little imagination I think you do have the perfect speaking partner – yourself! It’s a great idea to make role plays before class and to play both roles of the speakers in the role play. Essentially, you are having a conversation with yourself – both asking and answering the questions. 

If you want to make your conversations a little more interesting, you don’t need to just speak your role plays – you can sing them! I have a friend who does this when learning Japanese – in the shower every day! She says it’s a great way to build up her fluency – she doesn’t care if it’s 100% accurate – she just keeps singing! There is nobody there to judge her, so she says she can just relax and add new words to her favourite tunes. 

Why not give it a go, singing in the shower – in English!

今週のトピックは「音楽」、そこで私は、音楽と学習の繋がりについてシェアしたいと思います。生徒さんの多くは、レッスンの前にフラッシュカードを使ってやりたいできるだけたくさんスピーキングの練習ができないと感じている、なぜなら家にはスピーキングの相手がいないからです。でも、少し想像を働かせてみて下さい、私はあなたは完璧なスピーキングのパートナーを持てると思います、それは、あなた自身です！

レッスンの前に２人のスピーカー、どちらの役割も練習しておくことは素晴らしい考えです。自分自身に質問をし、答える。両方を行うことで自分と会話をするのです。

もし自分自身と会話をすることにもう少し興味があるのなら、ロールプレイで話すだけにとどめておく必要はありません、歌うことができるのです！毎日シャワーを浴びながら歌って日本語を勉強している友人がいますが、これは流暢に話せるようになるために素晴らしい方法だと言っていました。100%正確かどうかは気にせずに、ただ歌うだけ！そこには審査員はいません、だから彼女はリラックスして好きな曲に新しい単語を足すことができるのです。

試しにシャワーの中で歌ってみましょう、英語でね！

Expand more

Hi everyone,

One great way to improve your English and to best utilize our classes is to try and expand more. As you know our classes are focused on communication and trying to make an as natural as possible conversation about our subject while using the grammar and vocabulary you have pre-studied.

In order though to achieve more natural communication it’s important to challenge yourselves in class and try to expand more when asked a question or when talking about your news.. It can be pretty hard sometimes of course, especially in lower levels, but it’s very important to try. By trying we of course are going to fail a lot, make many mistakes but that is a crucial part of learning.

In my classes from now on, I’ll be asking you to  “Tell me more” so I can help you expand more,

ご存知の通り、私達のレッスンはコミュニケーションに特化していて、皆さんが予習した文法や単語を使いながら、できるだけ自然にサブジェクトについての会話ができる様にしています。

自然なコミュニケーションができる様になるためには、レッスンの中であなた自身がチャレンジすることと、質問されたりあなた自身のニュースについて話している時に、もっと話を広げられる様にトライすることが重要です。もちろん、かなり大変に感じることもあるかもしれません。しかし特に初級レベルにおいてはとても大切な試みです。たくさんミスをするのは当然です、でもこれは学習にとってとても大切なことなのです。

今後の私のレッスンでは、皆さんに「もっと話して」とお願いすることにします、きっと皆さんのお話を展開する手助けができることでしょう。

Challenge yourself to think in the target language 

Hello there, how’re you doing today? Are you taking it easy at home or you have some exciting plans?

My study advice and general language learning advice to you  today is...Challenge yourself to think in the target language. 
Thinking in the target language turns off our native language interference, so we can process information faster in the target language. In an English conversation, try not to think in Japanese and talk in English in an English conversation.

You can also try some fake conversations in your head in English. I do it in Japanese sometimes.

その言語で考えることで母国語に影響されるのを防げるので、学びたい言語の情報処理を早くすることができます。

英語の会話中は日本語で考えることを止めて話してみましょう。
頭の中でも英語で擬似会話してみましょう！私も時々日本語でやっていますよ。

Word families

Hey guys,

English can be a tricky language, and sometimes it doesn’t seem to make sense. But it also has little clues that – if you know how to identify them – can reveal meaning.

For example if a longer word ends in ‘ing’ (exciting, eating), then it probably can also function as a verb if you remove the ‘ing’ (excite, eat). Though, you might have to modify it a little bit, like adding the ‘e’ in ‘excite’, as I did.

Word families such as these can really help you get at the meaning of a word, even if you’ve never heard of it before. If you learn some word families yourself it can help you in many ways: understanding, pronunciation and spelling, to name a few.

Be careful though, guys. English has a complex History and some rules don’t always hold up in every situation. We gotta stay flexible! 🙂

英語はトリッキーな言語でもあり、つじつまが合わない様に見えることもあります。でもそれらを見分ける方法を知っていれば、そこには小さなてがかりがあり、意味を明らかにする事ができるのです。

例えば「ing」で終わる長めの単語( exitingやeating )は、「 ing 」を取る( excite,eat )とおそらく動詞として働くでしょう。私が「excite」に「 e 」を付け足した様に、少し修正しなくてはいけないかもしれませんが。

この様な「Word Family （品詞が違う単語のグループ）」は、例えあなたがその単語を以前に聞いた事が無かったとしても、その意味を知る為にとても役に立ちます。もしあなたがいくつかのWord Familyを学習すれば、少し例を挙げると、理解、発音、記述など、多くの面で助けになります。

でも皆さん、気を付けて下さい。英語は複雑な歴史を持っていて、いくつかのルールはどんな場合でも有効とは限りません。私達は柔軟に対応していかなければいけませんね！ 🙂

Study Advice How to make most of your lessons
learn about the culture

One of the best things about learning a foreign language is that you can also learn about the culture that comes with the language. Christmas in western culture is so different from how it is celebrated in Japan. If you have the chance before your Christmas classes, I recommend having a look online and trying to find out about some unfamiliar traditions that your teachers might often do at this time of year. Why not prepare some questions for your teacher, and ask them about their family home and traditions, or how they celebrated Christmas when they were young. For example, my mother has some very particular Christmas routines – she loves Christmas but my father doesn’t! Ask me in class and I’ll tell you all about it! And when I was young, I used to always go “sledging” with my friends in the park near my house. Have you heard of sledging?

I’ll be sure to give you all my sledging secrets in class!

ヨーロッパ文化と日本文化では、クリスマスのお祝い方法は大きく異なっています。もしクリスマスについてのレッスンを受ける前に、チャンスがあれば講師達がこの時期になるとやっているであろう、あなたにとっては身近ではない伝統をインターネットで探してみてください。講師に、いくつかの質問を用意しておいて、家族や家、伝統についてや、講師達が若かった時、どうやってクリスマスをお祝いしていたかについて質問してみてはいかがでしょうか。

例えば、私の母には特別なクリスマスの習慣がいくつかあります。母はクリスマスが好きですが、父はそうでもありません！これについてはレッスンの時に質問して下さい、全てをお話しできるでしょう！

そして、私が若い時にはよく、家の近くの公園に友達とスレッジングに行きました。スレッジングについて聞いたことがありますか？

レッスンの中で、私のスレッジングの秘密についても全てお話ししますよ！

Take your classes at the same time and day

Sometimes it’s really hard to find time for things we want to do because of our busy schedules. What I’ve found out this year is that having a fixed time and day to take your classes is an excellent way to make sure you always have time for them.

In Kensington we believe in providing you with as much flexibility as possible but sometimes too much flexibility is not the best thing. Having a fixed time and day you take your classes makes it much easier to plan your rest of your busy week around them. For example, after I decided that I’ll be going to the gym on Friday evening, I never under any circumstances arrange any work at that time. Please give it a try!

私達のスケジュールはとても忙しく、やりたい事のために時間を見つけるのは、時々本当に難しいものです。私は今年気が付きました、レッスンの日時を固定することは、レッスン時間を必ず確保するための素晴らしい方法です。

ケンジントンではできるだけ柔軟にレッスンを設けていると考えていますが、時に柔軟過ぎるのは最も良い方法ではないこともあります。決められた日時にレッスンを受けることで、忙しい週の中でもその前後に休息の計画を立てやすくなるでしょう。

例えば私は、金曜の夜はジムに行くことに決めました、その後はどんな状況下でもこの時間に仕事を入れなくなりました。

reuse what you have learned

Hi everyone,

I know I have told you many times to review review review and that is of course very important but it is even more important to use what you have learned.

My advice today would be to take what you have learned in a previous class and put it into practice in the next class.

For example, if your previous class was “Home and Neighbourhood” you can incorporate that into the small talk section at the beginning of the lesson by talking about something new you have bought for your house, your neighbours, or an event that has happened in your neighbourhood recently. At Kensington we feel that small talk is a very important skill that most Japanese students, low and high level, have difficulty with. This is sometimes connected to the fact that only a week has passed since the last class and there isn’t much to talk about so why not use this as an opportunity for review.

みなさんに何回も復習、復習、復習と言ってきました。もちろん復習はとても大切ですが、「学んだことを使うこと」がより重要なのです。

今日の私のアドバイスは、
前回のレッスンで学んだことを、次回のレッスンの中で練習する！

例えば、もし前回のレッスンが「家と隣人」なら、自宅や隣人用に買った新しいものや、最近近所で起こったイベントについてレッスンの最初のスモールトークのパートで話しを組み込むことができます。ケンジントンでは、スモールトークは初級、上級のレベルに関わらず、苦手意識を持つ日本人の生徒さんにとってとても重要だと感じています。
実際には、前回のレッスンからたった1週間が過ぎた時にはまだ十分に話すことができないかもしれません。だから次のレッスンを復習のための機会として使いましょう！

あなたはすぐに成果を得るでしょう！

I think you’ve heard this advice before. I’m emphasizing it again that learning a language makes more sense and it’s more fun and rewarding when it is tied to something you like to do. Speak about, listen, watch, read about fashion and beauty in English if that’s your passion.

Positive reflection

Hey guys, 

I’m here with another study tip. It’s super helpful to look back sometimes so that you can gauge how far you’ve come, and it helps to analyse what has worked well for you in building up your knowledge. And after that, you can start to focus on key areas of improvement in the future, making a goal is a good way to stay motivated. I recommend anyone who sets a big goal to also establish little ‘checkpoints’ along the way.

I’m always impressed with the progression that students demonstrate, especially if I haven’t seen them for a few weeks. Take that time now and then, if you can, to recognise your own brilliance!
