How to make most of your lessons

As you may have noticed recently teachers have started to assign personalised homework for many of our students. This is part of our general drive for classes more and more focused on each individual student’s needs and part of the complete customization we want to offer for our private courses. 

We currently don’t assign homework for every student and after every class but I think our personalised homework is an excellent way to focus on the language and grammar that you need in order to get better so please ask the teacher for homework!

How to ask? “I want to be more prepared for next class. Would you please assign me my personalized homework?”

Watching movies

Hey guys, 

Our subject this week is ‘Cinema’ which I think presents a good opportunity to encourage you all to keep watching/watch more English media. TV shows, films, news, whatever it is, it is so helpful to learning a second language. I don’t know a single high level student that hasn’t, at one point or another, consistently consumed media in the language they are learning. 

Learning a language is all about input(listening and reading) and output(writing and speaking), the more English movies you watch, the more ‘input’ you get. You don’t even have to treat it as study, just enjoy the movie for what it is. There are passive learning elements to listening to another language, and the more the better. 

I also recommend this to students; when you hear an expression in a movie that you like or sounds interesting, write it down, look it up, and use it in class. It’s a great way to learn new, natural expressions.

今週のサブジェクト『映画』です。今こそ皆さんに見て欲しい/もっと見て欲しい英語のメディアをお勧めする良いチャンスだと思います。
テレビ番組や映画、ニュース、天気予報…何であれあなたが第2言語を学ぶ大きな助けとなります。高いレベルの生徒さんで、学習している言語のメディアを1度も視聴したことがない人を知りません。

言語学習はインプット（聞く、読む）と、アウトプット（書く、話す）がすべてです。
英語の映画を観れば観るほど、さらにインプットすることができるでしょう。勉強と捉えなくても、ただ映画を楽しめば良いのです。
母国語以外の言語を聞くことには受動的な学習要素があり、これは多ければ多いほど良いでしょう。

また、勉強にはこんな方法もお勧めです。
映画の中で好きなフレーズや気になる表現を聞いたら、書き出して調べ、レッスンで使ってみましょう。新しく自然な表現を学ぶ素晴らしい方法です。

Relax


Hello there, hope you’re having a good weekend. Mine is not so eventful, but I’m happy to just chill (relax) at home with my family. This week, my advice to you and to myself as we practice or learn a foreign language is to try to relax in class when speaking to the teacher, classmates as well as in other settings. I find it easier to communicate and more adventurous with the language when I’m relaxed, than when I’m tense or nervous. Do you know any relaxing techniques? Try  them when you come to class and see if it makes any difference.

私はと言うと、特別なイベントはありませんが、家で家族とのんびりリラックスしているだけで幸せです。

緊張したり、神経質になっている時よりもリラックスしている時の方が、コミュニケーションを取るのが簡単に感じますし、より英語で冒険ができます。

Learning After Learning

Happy Sunday, Denny here.

Something that I try to emphasize with many students is that we tend to learn things after we have studied them, rather than when we study them.

This is a little confusing so I’ll try to explain.

When we are studying or in class, we are often focusing very hard and struggling to use the things we are learning. This is a good thing, and what it means is that you’re very aware of what you’re doing, so it’s a slow process.

You learn when you sleep and rest, though. For example, have you noticed when you clean the dishes or play a sport you know very well, you can notice yourself doing it, like it’s automatic?

That’s what happens after your brain “integrates” the things you have learned. The study process is always slow and stressful on the mind – but when you sleep and rest, it becomes “automatic” over time, and in the future you suddenly speak without thinking so hard. It’s when we learn new things, we become very aware and struggle. It means you’re taking the information in. Good!

学習に関して、多くの生徒さんに強調して来た事があります。
私達は「勉強している時」よりも、「勉強した後」に習得している傾向があります。

少し分かりづらいので、例を挙げましょう。

勉強している時やレッスン中は、とても集中していたり、学んでいる事を使おうと一生懸命に奮闘している事がよくあります。これはいい事です。どういう事かと言うと、今やっている事をじっくりと認識しようとしているのです。

私達は、眠ったり休んだりしいる時に習得することがあります。
例えばよくご存知だと思いますが、お皿を洗ったり、スポーツをしている時、気づいたら無意識でやっていたことはありませんか？

これは、あなたの脳が学んだことを吸収した後に起こることです。学習のプロセスは常にゆっくりとしていて、精神的なストレスもかかっています。しかしあなたが眠り、休んだ後では、段々と自動的にできる様になり、将来突然頭で難しく考える前に話せる様になったりするのです。
新しいことを学ぶ時はとても苦労しますが、あなたが情報を吸収しているということなのです、良いことですね！

IELTS Advice

Hello again everyone,

As you know by now we are going to be offering test preparation help and advice for IELTS, TOEIC, TOEFL, and EIKEN from this year. I will be focusing on teaching mostly IELTS and from now on will be giving you all hints and tips here on different parts of the test and what to expect on the day of your exam. 

Today we will start with an easy tip for part one of the speaking test.
You will be asked a number of simple questions about yourself, where you are from, and why you are studying English. This part of the test is a back and forth conversation between you and the examiner and lasts for about 4-5 minutes. It covers a range of different topics that will be covered in most IELTS textbooks. 

Tip: There is a lot of material available to prepare for this but try not to memorise each one. If the examiner feels that you are giving a memorised answer they will change the topic so by all means practice as many of the different topics that may come up but don’t commit them to memory, they are looking for English used fluently and naturally.

私は今後、 主にIELTS対策を行う予定で、皆さんにテストに関する様々なヒントやコツ、テスト当日に予測されることについてお伝えして行きます。

今日はスピーキングパートについての簡単なヒントをお伝えします。
あなたは、どこから来ましたか？なぜ英語を勉強しているのですか？などあなた自身についていくつかの簡単な質問をされるでしょう。
あなたと試験官の間で交わされる会話は4～５分続きます。ほとんどのIELTSテキストで取り上げられているであろう、様々なトピックをカバーしています。

ヒント: テスト対策に関する沢山の教材がありますが、ひとつひとつを記憶する必要はありません。試験官はあなたが答えを暗記していると感じたら、話題を変更するでしょう。
もちろん出てくる可能性のある様々なトピックをできるだけ多く練習していいですが、記憶はしないようにしましょう。彼らは流暢で自然な英語を望んでいるのです。

Request extra homework

Hello everyone,

This piece of advice is only for our private students or group students that would like to take extra private classes. If you have time and energy to study more, why don’t you ask your teacher at the end of each class what you can study for next lesson.

We can ask you to prepare something and talk about it at your next lesson. For example if your subject today was “Friends and Friendship”, you could start your next lesson with talking about your best friend or write a small passage about the most important things you are looking for in a friendship.

Basically we are always mindful of how busy our students are so we don’t assign homework (except from our flashcards for next class) but if you’d like to spend more time on English and progress even further please let us know and we can assign you things to do!

私達は、次回のレッスンについて話し、予習をお願いするでしょう。例えば今日のサブジェクトが “Friends and Friendship”だったなら、あなたは次回のレッスンの冒頭で親友について話したり、友情の中であなたが求める最も重要な事について、短い作文を書いて来る事ができます。

基本的に、いつもは生徒さんの忙しさを考慮して宿題をお願いすることはありません（次回のレッスンに向けたフラッシュカードを除いて）。しかしもしあなたがさらに多く英語に時間をかけ、上達したいなら、ぜひお知らせ下されば手配致します！

Hey guys, 

As this week’s lesson topic is ‘rules’, it got me thinking about the ‘rules’ we have to follow when speaking English. English is a very old and mixed up language, so sometimes there are some rules that we still follow today, but really there is no logical reason to. 

An easy example is spelling. Some words in English have letters that you wouldn’t expect. Any strange spelling you see probably used to make sense, when it was first spelt. But now it doesn’t, and we didn’t change it, so we have odd parts of the language that we just have to remember. 

The reason I bring this up is I want to encourage you to not worry too much over the rules of English. Of course they are important, but you will learn them in an organic way by taking in a lot of English material, and practicing as much as you can with speaking. This is particularly true of English, as there are a lot of weird, old rules that can actually trip you up, if you focus too much on them. 

Talk as much as you can in lessons, consume as much English material as you enjoy, and use the language that you hear or see(from your teacher, a movie, video game, book, etc).

英語はとても古く、様々な言語が混ざり合っているので、時には今でも守らなければいけないいくつかのルールがあります。しかし実際、そこには理論的な理由は無かったりするのです。

簡単な例としては、綴りがあります。
いくつかの英単語は予想もしないアルファベットを使用します。あなたが目にするどんな奇妙なスペルにも、おそらく一番最初に綴られた時の、何らかの理由があったのでしょう。
今となってはその理由は関係ありませんが、私達はそれを変えなかったので、言語の奇妙な部分をただ覚えなければいけないのです。

私がこの話題を選んだ理由は、皆さんが英語のルールを心配し過ぎないで欲しいからです。もちろんルールは大切ですが、皆さんは多くの英語の教材や、できるだけ多くの会話練習から、本質的に学ぶことができるはずです。
特に英語に関して、これは真実です。もしあなたがこれらを気にし過ぎていたら、沢山の奇妙で古いルールはあなたをつまづかせてしまうでしょう。

レッスンではできるだけたくさん話して下さい。あなたが楽しめる英語の教材をたくさん使って下さい。そして講師や映画、ビデオゲームや本などで見たり聞いたりした英語を使ってみましょう。

Like a child

No, I’m not saying that you should act like a kid in a language  class, but children tend to learn languages faster than we adults because they’re not afraid to make mistakes, they imitate, repeat phrases when corrected and they have fun while learning. They sing songs, chant, recite poems, rhymes  etc. Do you use any of that in your English study? I sometimes do, in Japanese.

Don’t Hesitate to Speak

Sometimes, students hesitate to say what they want to say because on some level, they’re unsure of whether their English is correct or not.

Ignore the idea that your English needs to be “correct”. There is no such thing as perfection, but there is competence, and competence is reached only when you speak and make a LOT of mistakes.

When you make mistakes, you’re learning about what is “wrong” – this means that you now understand what NOT to do, thus giving you the ability to figure out what is “right”.

Failure is the stepping stone to success. Perfection is a boring thing, in my opinion. The strangeness of people is what makes them beautiful.

生徒さん達は、何かを言いたいと思っても言うことをためらってしまうことがあります。なぜならいくつかのレベルでは、彼らは自分の英語が正しいかどうかの確信が持てないからです。

あなたの英語が「正しい」必要があるという考えは捨てて下さい。完璧なことなどありません。必要なのはただ十分な能力です。ここにはあなたが話し沢山のミスをすることによってのみ、達することができるのです。

ミスをすると、何が間違っていたかについて学ぶことができます。つまり、今やってはいけないことについて理解することは、あなたに正解を見極める力を与えるのです。

失敗は成功のための足がかりです。
完璧ではつまらないと私は思います。人々の奇妙さこそが美しいのですから。

Track your progress

Hello there everyone!

Last week I taught the learning English class, and one common theme I found from the students was that they had trouble recognising if they had made any progress or not. First of all let me reassure you that the Kensington style of lessons is perfect for beginners and I can’t think of any of our lower level students that has not made any progress, for higher level students it is more difficult to judge progress but it can still be done. Secondly, with language learning it is often the student that notices their improvement last, teachers see it and we will be more proactive in making sure you are aware of it from now on. 

One thing you can do if you aren’t feeling too sure about your progress is of course to ask your teacher about how you are doing and what you need to work on next. Another would be to take the occasional private class for a more personalised experience, you can also record the class if you like, take a look at the video, and try again  6 months later to see how much progress you have made. If you think back to your first classes with us, and how you are now, I’m sure you will find that you have indeed come a long way since then, and once again, if you need confirmation, please feel free to ask us for help anytime.

皆さん こんにちは！

先週レッスンで教えていた中で、生徒さんに共通することとして、自分が上達しているかどうかを認識するのが難しいということに気が付きました。
まず、ケンジントン英会話のレッスンスタイルは初心者の方にも完璧に最適ですので、安心して下さい。どんなに初心者生徒さんでも、上達していない方は一人もいません。
上級者の生徒さんは、上達したかどうかの判断は更に難しいかもしれませんが、可能です。
2つ目に、語学学習では、生徒さん自身が自分の成長に最後に気づくことが多いのですが、講師にはそれが見えているので、今後は更に積極的に成長に気づくように、確認して行きます。

自分が成長に確信が持てない時にできることのひとつはもちろん、あなたの成長ぶりや次に必要な事について講師に聞くことです。
他にも、たまにプライベートレッスンを受けてより個人的な経験をしたり、よろしければレッスンを記録することも可能です。ビデオを撮り、半年後にも再度行うと、成長に気づくことができるでしょう。

私達との最初のレッスンと、今を思い返してみて下さい。
長い道のりを歩んで来たことを改めて実感できるはずです。
