Describing things

Hey guys, 

Not many of our students practice describing things in our classes. It’s a really helpful skill to develop, as it’s often more useful in ‘real-life’ situations. Describing also allows you to practice speaking more English, it requires you to think more in English, and to remember extra words. The point is not to describe something perfectly, the point is to use the English you know to continue the conversation. Even hard words like ‘商工会議所’ can be described in part: ‘government’ ‘for money’ ‘big building’ ‘many people work there’. 

Here are some examples:
ムカデ “It’s a long, disgusting bug.” “It’s a tiny thing with lots of legs.”
港 “It’s a place for boats!”
首相 “He is the government leader” “He’s super important. Always on the TV, he talks about Japan a lot!”

やあ皆さん、

レッスン中に物の描写を練習をしている生徒さんはそう多くないと思いますが、これは英語の上達や、実際に生活する環境で本当に訳に立つスキルです！
描写することはあなたがより英語を話すことの練習にもなります。そのためには、もっと英語で考え、追加の単語を覚えることが必要です。

描写のポイントは何かを完璧に表現することではなく、知っている英語を使って会話を続けることです。
例えば、商工会議所の様な難しい単語でも、「お金のための政府」「大きな建物」「沢山の人々が働いている」の様に部分的に描写することができます。

いくつかの例を挙げてみましょう。
ムカデ…長くて、気持ち悪い昆虫。細くて沢山の足がある。
港…船のための場所！
首相…政府のリーダー　とても重要な人　いつもテレビに出ている　日本について沢山のことを話す。

Prediction

Hey guys, today I’d like to highlight the power of ‘prediction’, especially when preparing for lessons. 

Prediction is used in Education to help students make connections within any given subject.  A very simple example would be how students learn Maths. A student that learns 5+5=10 might predict how to get the answer to 10+10, even if they’ve never done it before, because they can make a connection between the numbers and the “+” sign. Students that make more, stronger connections can do harder sums. And students that are particularly good at Maths are the students that are able to more quickly ‘predict’ what method they need to solve a sum.

So how does this help you? Well, English is really no different, you get more knowledge as you study, but if your brain isn’t good at predicting what knowledge it needs, then it won’t be efficient, and you won’t be able to show how much you know. One way to improve this aspect is trying to practice prediction when you prepare for lessons. For example, if your next topic is Restaurants, try and predict how that topic might be expanded in the classroom. You could go even further and prepare some extra questions that you think would help expand the conversation naturally, i.e “what food do you like?” “Where else do you go with your spouse?”.

This will help you practice some additional English, connect topics together, and be better prepared for your lesson. Win win win! 🙂

推測する力

やあ皆さん、今日は特にレッスンの予習をする時の「推測」の持つ力に焦点を当ててみたいと思います。

教育においては、推測は生徒さんは与えられたサブジェクトを他の事と関連づけるのに役立ちます。
とてもシンプルな例としては、算数の学び方があります。彼らは5+5＝10という事から、10+10の答えを出す方法を学ぶでしょう。たとえ以前にやったことが無かったとしても。
なぜなら彼らは数字と数字の間にある「＋」という記号を応用できるからです。さらに関連付けて考えることで、もっと難しい計算の答えを出すこともできます。特に数学が得意な学生達は、解くために必要なメソッドをより早く推測することができるでしょう。

これはどの様に皆さんの役に立つのでしょうか？
英語もそう変わらないのです。学習してして知識を得る時、もしあなたの脳が、必要な知識を推測するのが苦手だったなら、効率が悪く、どのくらい知っているかを示すのも難しいでしょう。

この状態を改善するひとつの方法は、レッスンの予習をする時に、推測する訓練をすることです。
例えば次回のレッスントピックがレストランであれば、このトピックがどの様に広がる可能性があるかを推測してみてみましょう。

更に、教室で自然な会話を展開できるように、いくつかの追加の質問を準備しましょう。例えば、「what food do you like? / どんな食べ物が好きですか？」や「Where else do you go with your spouse? / あなたは夫や妻とどこへ行きますか？ 」など。
これはあなたの英語を上達させ、話題を繋げ、より良いレッスンの予習となるでしょう。
