Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Prepare, practice, review

At Kensington we provide lots of materials to prepare for class: flashcards, videos, blogs, etc. Those materials all serve the lesson where we can practice what students have studied. After the lesson students take pictures of the whiteboard, or they get a document from online lessons, which outlines what we did in the lesson for future reference. And in all lessons there is a part for review of the previous lesson.

I wanted to outline the processes that we do in order to teach and learn English. It’s easy to forget about one aspect of learning, or to just focus on the lesson time, especially with our busy lives. But every part is very important for learning English. A student that thoroughly prepares for the lesson will have more time to practice using it in the lesson, a student that thoroughly reviews their lesson has a much better chance at retaining that information and using it properly in the future. 

Sometimes it’s good to take a moment to reflect on how much time we’re dedicating to each part, to see if we’re giving preparation, practice and review enough time.

ケンジントン英会話では、レッスンの予習のためにたくさんの教材を提供しています。フラッシュカード、ビデオ、ブログなどなど。生徒さんはこれらで学んだことを、レッスンで練習することができるのでとても役に立ちます。

レッスンで行ったことの概要を後から参照するために、レッスンの最後ではホワイトボードの写真を撮れますし、オンラインレッスンの場合は書類データを貰うこともできます。
そして、すべてのレッスンで、前回のレッスンの復習を行います。

英語を教え、学ぶために、その「過程」について大まかに述べたいと思います。
これは特に忙しい生活の中では、学習するうちに忘れてしまいやすく、レッスンの時間にだけ注目されてしまいがちな点でもあります。
しかし、英語学習にとっては全ての過程が大切なのです。
レッスンに向けて徹底的に予習する事で、レッスン中にそれを使う練習の時間をより多く取る事ができるでしょうし、徹底的に復習する事で、学んだ事を維持し将来きちんと使う事ができるでしょう。
時々は、予習、練習そして復習それぞれのパートにどの位の時間を費やしていて、十分な時間が取れているかどうかを検証してみる時間を取るといいでしょう。

Sharp Breath In!

Hey everyone, Denny here. Hope you’re having a great Sunday.
Today’s study advice is a method that I’ve learned from my studies in counseling and in neuroscience. People often think about how they can focus better when studying or doing something, and a way to get yourself into a focused mode is to learn to breathe in a certain way before you begin studying.
The trick is: take a sharp and fast breath in, then breathe out normally. Do this a few times. As you do it, you might notice you become more alert. Why?

Because when you do this, you trigger a “stress response”. Think about when you exercise: as you breathe in faster, you become more alert. It’s the same thing in studying. So if you want to focus, you can do this before you study to trigger alertness.

Once you want to relax, too, you breathe in normally, but breathe out slowly. This triggers a relaxation response.

本日の学習アドバイスでは、私が学習カウンセラーと脳(神経)科学から学んだメソッドをご紹介します。
人々は学習する際や何か物事を行う際、どうやったらもっと集中できるかを考える事があると思います。あなたをより集中した状態にする為には、勉強を始める前の呼吸について学ぶといいでしょう。
方法はこうです: 強く短く息を吸い、普通通りに吐く。これを数回行って下さい。おそらくより緊張感が高まった状態になっている事に気がつくでしょう。なぜでしょうか？

なぜなら、これを行う事でストレス反応を引き起こすからです。
エクササイズの時を考えてみて下さい。呼吸が早くなると、より集中した状態になるはずで、これは勉強においても同様です。
集中したい時は、勉強を始める前にこれを行って緊張感のある状態を引き起こして下さい。

リラックスしたい時には、普通通りに息を吸い、ゆっくりと吐いてください。これはリラックス反応を引き起こします。

How to make the most of your lessons
Pair Work

Hello there everyone.

As you know in Kensington we always use pair work in class to maximise student to student speaking time and minimize teacher talking time.
Since you already know that you will be speaking with a partner, it may be a good idea for the small talk section to think about what you would like to ask to

  1. someone you are meeting for the first time
  2. someone who you regularly meet in class

and for the lesson itself you can consider extra follow up questions on the theme of the day. For example the topic for this weekend’s class is British Pubs so you could ask about..

  • favourite drinks/ bar food
  • bars that you like in Fukuoka
  • Why people go to bars and what you can do in a bar
  • Have you been to a British bar?
  • What did you order?
  • How was it? 

The list can go on and on. Basically the better prepared you are for your class the more you will get out of it and the more time you will have to enjoy talking with your partner rather than considering what to talk about next.

皆さんこんにちは。

ご存知の様に、ケンジントン英会話のレッスンではではいつもペアワークを行い、講師が話すだけの時間を減らし、生徒さん同士の会話時間をできるだきるだけ増やすようにしています。

パートナーと話すと事前にわかっているので、スモールトークの時間に以下の人達に向けての質問を考えておくのは良いアイデアです。

  1. a) 初対面の人
  2. b) いつもレッスンで会う人

そしてレッスンに向け、その日のテーマに関連する質問を追加で考えておきましょう。
例えば、今週末のテーマ「ブリティッシュパブ」に向けては質問するなら、、、

  • 好きなパブ・居酒屋の飲み物 / 食べ物は？
  • 福岡で好きなバー・居酒屋は？
  • なぜバー・居酒屋に行きますか？バー・居酒屋で何ができますか？
  • ブリティッシュパブに行ったことがありますか？
  • 何を頼みましたか？
  • それはどうでしたか？

このリストは延々と続けることができます。

基本的には、レッスンに向けてよく準備をすればするほど、次に何を話そうかと（その場で）考えるよりも早く考える時間から脱し、パートナーとの会話時間をより多く楽しむことができるでしょう。

Study together with a friend

A great way to enjoy learning even more is doing it with a friend or another family member, that way you can get more speaking and practice time between the lessons.

For our group students introducing a friend to our classes is a great way to enjoy learning even more but also for our private students, having a friend in Kensington (even on a different course) is a great way to get more speaking reps.

If you do introduce one of your friends to Kensington, we’ll make sure to discount the entrance fee a bit to make it easier for them to join up!

Confirm that you understand

Hello there everyone

I’m pretty sure that I mentioned in an earlier blog about the regular adult teaching team meetings we hold which are proving very useful not only in giving each other opinions on how to teach and feedback on the lessons, but also in seeing what is happening in the class and how we can improve our service in the classroom too.

One thing I have noticed during the classes is that students may have missed the opportunity to confirm whether they understood what a phrase they were being taught was, understood the grammar, or even knew what to do next in the class especially in level 1 classes. 

Please don’t be afraid to speak out and ask the teacher when you aren’t quite sure. 

I’m sorry, can you repeat that please?

Excuse me, I don’t understand. 

Is this right? 

Is my English correct?

Who is my partner?

Excuse me but I don’t know what to do.

Am I pronouncing this right? 

These are just a few of the things you can use in class when you aren’t sure. We will make a set of flashcards for them in the near future and let you know when it is ready so watch this space.

理解できるまで確認しよう

皆さんこんにちは。

以前のブログで、定期的に大人のレッスンの講義内容に関してのチームミーティングを設けていることに触れました。そこではどうやって教え、フィードバックを貰うかについて意見を出し合うだけでなく、レッスンの中で起こったことを見て、どうやって私たちのサービスを向上させるかについても有益なミーテイングとなっています。

レッスンの中でひとつ気づいた事があります。特にレベル１のクラスでは、生徒さん達は教わったフレーズや文法、レッスンの中で次に行うことでさえも、理解できたかどうかの確認ができていないことがあったかもしれません。

よくわからないことがある時には、どうか恐れずに発言して、講師に質問して下さい。

I’m sorry, can you repeat that please?
（すみません、今のフレーズをもう一度言ってもらえますか？）

Excuse me, I don’t understand.
（すみません、よくわかりません。）

Is this right?
（これで合っていますか？）

Is my English correct?
（私の英語は正しいですか？）

Who is my partner?
（私のパートナーは誰ですか？）

Excuse me but I don’t know what to do.
（すみません、何をやればいいかわかりません。）

Am I pronouncing this right?
（私の発音は合っていますか？）

これらは、もしレッスン中によくわからない事があった時に使えるほんのいくつかの例です。

How to make most of your lessons

Hello there, how’s your weekend going? Mine is kind of low key. I’m chilling at home.

In our Study Advice blog, I have two simple pieces of advice to you, our students and to myself (I’m studying Japanese).


  1.  When listening to your teacher, classmate, TV show etc don’t worry about not understanding everything. Try to guess meaning through context. 

      Rumi: Any plans for the weekend Saki?
      Saki: Hmm…not much. I’m gonna just chill at home.

      In this context chill means relax.

  1. Use the language(words, expressions) you know, to communicate. That way, you can think in the target language (English for you and Japanese for me). Your sentences may sound too simple at times, but that’s ok. You’ll sound more sophisticated as you learn more words and expressions.

私はおとなしく、家でのんびりと過ごしています。

今回の英語の学習法のブログでは、あなたに、私たちの生徒さんに、そして私自身に向けて、シンプルな2つのアドバイスをしたいと思います（私は日本語の学習中です）。

1．講師やクラスメイト、テレビを聞いている時、全てを理解できなくても気にしないで下さい。文脈を通して意味を推測してみましょう。

Rumi: Any plans for the weekend Saki?
（サキ、週末は何か予定がある？）
Saki: Hmm…not much. I’m gonna just chill at home.
（うーん、特にない。家でただのんびりする予定。）

この文脈から、「Chill」はリラックスを意味するとわかります。

2．コミュニケーションを取るために、言語（単語や表現）を使いましょう。あなたの目的の言語（皆さんなら英語、私は日本語）で考えてみてください。
時にはあなたの文章はシンプル過ぎるように聞こえるかもしれませんが、それでもいいのです。あなたが単語や表現を学んで行くうちに、より洗練されていくはずです。

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Having fun

I started studying Japanese again last week as I took a break for a little while. I wasn’t enjoying it, it felt like a chore. I decided that I will try something different, so I started a new class and started playing a new video game in Japanese, now learning Japanese feels fun!

I know it sounds simple, and it is, but enjoying your studying is really important. Of course we hope you enjoy your lessons as much as we enjoy teaching them (which is a lot!), and if you can find extra things outside of that you enjoy (video games, books, music, movies, TV shows, YouTube, podcasts) then that will help a lot, too.

少しの間お休みしていたのですが、先週から日本語の学習を再開しました。

実は以前は、それを義務の様に感じてしまい、楽しめていませんでした。そこで私は少し変えてみる事にしました。新しいレッスンと、新しい日本語のゲーム始めて、今は日本語を学ぶことを楽しんでいます！

これはとても単純なことに聞こえるでしょう、でも学習を楽しむことをはとても大切なことなのです。
もちろん、私たちが教えるのを楽しんでいる(とっても！)のと同様に、皆さんがレッスンを楽しんで下さることを願っています。さらにレッスン以外でも楽しめる何か(ゲーム、本、音楽、映画、テレビ番組、ユーチューブやポッドキャストなど)を見つけられたら、それはすごくいい手助けになるでしょう。

 Jeopardy style learning!

My study tip for today is Jeopardy style learning! Do you know the famous game show in America called Jeopardy? The host gives the answer and the contestant provides the correct question – it’s like a back to front game show. Well, if you are preparing for, for example, this week’s Restaurants class you can use the same style to get ready for class. If you have a photo of a time you went to a restaurant, or a photo of your favourite restaurant/menu, you can share it in class. Before you go to class you can prepare a short speech to introduce the photo or restaurant. Then, think about what questions your statements answer. For example, if you say “This is a photo of me and my high school friend in a yakitori restaurant” – the question would be “Who are you with?” / “Who did you go with?” or “What kind of restaurant are you in?” Remember, you can ask the same questions to your classmates when they show you their photos or describe their favourite restaurant. This style of reverse learning is a great way to find out lots of information from your partner, show interest and continue the conversation. Try it in class and see if it helps to improve your fluency and ability to hold a more natural conversation.

今日の私からの学習アドバイスは「Jeopardy(ジェパディ) スタイルの学習」です！
アメリカの有名なゲームショウ「ジェパディ」をご存知ですか？

まず司会者が「答え」を提示し、解答者が「正しい質問」を答えるという、前後の順序が逆になったようなクイズ形式の番組です。

予習をするなら、例えば、今週の「レストラン」のレッスンに向けても同じ方法で準備をすることができます。もしあなたがレストランに行った時の写真や、お気に入りのレストランやメニューの写真を持っていたら、レッスンで共有して下さい。レッスンに行く前に、写真やレストランの短い紹介文を準備し、それから、あなたの答えに対する質問を考えましょう。

例えばもしあなたが、

「これは私と高校時代の友人が焼き鳥屋さんにいる写真です」と言ったら、
「あなたと一緒にいる人は誰ですか？/ あなたは誰と一緒にそこに行きましたか？」

または
「あなたはどんなレストランにいるのですか？/」などの質問になります。

クラスメイトが写真を見せてお気に入りのレストランについて説明した場合にも、あなたは同じ質問をすることができますね。

この逆転の学習はあなたがパートナーから沢山の情報を得て興味を示し、会話を続けるための素晴らしい学習方法です。

I’m sounding like a broken record on these blogs but please always come to our classes with a target to use as much English as possible. 

In Kensington we have a pre-study site with most of the vocab and grammar necessary for you to participate in our classes smoothly. Please come prepared and try to see each class as a conversation with your teacher about the subject of the day. If you come prepared with many things to say about our subject and many questions for your teachers, you’ll soon find out that you are improving at a higher rate than before!

Ask for feedback 

Hello again,

As you may have read in our news blogs recently one of the big themes for this year in Kensington is feedback. It has proved very useful amongst the staff and teachers alike and I think it is something we should be encouraging you all to do too. 

If you are unsure of what you should be focusing on, not sure of your strong points, weak points, feel a little unconfident about your grammar or really just anything at all related to your English, why not ask your teacher at the beginning of the class to give you feedback at the end? Of course we will always do our utmost to give you general advice anyway but if you ask for feedback on a specific part of your language learning it is easier for our teachers to help you with what you need. Please feel free to ask for the same feedback from different teachers too. It is always nice to hear different opinions so the more the merrier.

レッスンの前に講師に言って下されば、レッスンの最後にフィードバックを行います。もちろん、私たちはいつでも最善のアドバイスを行っています。でももし、語学学習の中の特に気になる部分について尋ねて下されば、必要なフィードバックをより簡単に行うことができます。
