Eiken Pre-2 Speaking

Hey there everyone. We have a fair number of students preparing for Eiken pre-2 at the moment and one of the things you need to be aware of is that the speaking section takes a bit of a jump from 3 to pre-2.  You will have to describe some everyday situations in English and a lot of the verbs may  be new to you such as “lay the table” “plant a flower” “get in/ out of a car” and so on so doing a lot of practice of past tests with your teacher is probably best or going through past tests by yourself using a dictionary to make sure you are using the correct English phrase. One thing I have noticed is that younger students try to translate directly from Japanese Into English in this section and that is not the best idea because the verbs or prepositions we use are sometimes very different.

みなさん、こんにちは。
現在、かなりの数の生徒さんが英検準2級の準備をしています。
ここで注意する必要があるのは、準2級のスピーキングセクションは3級と比べて少し難易度が上がるということです。
日常のできごとを英語で説明する必要があり、「lay the table（食卓の用意をする）」「plant a flower（花を植える）」「get in / out of a car（車に乗り込む／車から降りる）」など、あなたにとって初めての動詞が多くあるかもしれません。
そのため、講師と一緒に過去のテストを練習するか、もしくは自分で過去のテストをチェックして、辞書を使いながら自分が正しい英語フレーズを使っているか確認するのがおそらく最善です。
若い生徒さんで、日本語から英語に直訳しようとしている方がいらっしゃることに気づきましたが、日本語と英語では使用する動詞や前置詞が非常に異なることがあるため、直訳はあまり良いアイデアではありません。

Eiken Speaking Practice

Hello there everyone and good luck to all of you who took the Eiken test this month. I’m sure you will all pass with flying colours!  That being said, now is not the time to rest. The results of the previous test will be announced on the 24th of this month and if you have passed you only have a couple of weeks to prepare for the speaking part so I suggest you get started now. Basically even though the two parts of the test are held separately you should prepare for the speaking part as early as possible because the amount of time between the results from the first test and then taking the spoken part is very short.

基本的に、一次試験と二次試験は別日に行われますが、一次試験のテスト結果から二次試験を受けるまでの期間は非常に短いため、できるだけ早くスピーキングの準備に備える必要があります。

Hello there everyone

As you know eiken is just around the corner again and at the moment I have 3 of my guys studying for level pre 2 next January.  One thing to remember when moving up from level 3 to levels pre 2 is that the reading and writing section is slightly longer. It goes from 50 to 75 minutes. My advice is not to spend too much time on the vocabulary section. If you don’t know a word or phrase then you don’t know and there is no magical way for you to find the answer. You can of course improve your chances by doing lots of past test papers and making notes of all the new vocabulary. The reading sections however do contain the answers to your questions so take a bit more time and care with those, you can always go back to the vocab section if you have time leftover. I’d recommend splitting the sections up into about 15 mins for vocabulary, 40 mins for the reading, and 15-20 mins for the writing section. Please give that a try when studying for your test and see how it works for you. Remember that the writing section accounts for one third of your overall score.

ご存じのように、英検がまた間近に迫っています。
現在、来年 1 月にある英検2級に向けて勉強している生徒さんが3名います。
3級から準2級に上がるときに覚えておくべきことの一つは、一次試験の時間が少し長くなることです。
3級では50分だったのが、準2級では75分になります。
私からのアドバイスは、語彙のセクションにあまり時間をかけないことです。
単語やフレーズを知らない場合、答えを見つけるための魔法のような方法はありません。
もちろん、過去の試験問題をたくさんやり、新しい語彙をすべてメモすることで、チャンスを増やすことはできます。
ただし、リーディングセクションには質問への回答が含まれているため、もう少し時間をかけて注意してください。
時間が残っている場合は、いつでも語彙セクションに戻ることができます。
ボキャブラリーは約15分、リーディングは40分、ライティング セクションは15～20分にセクションを分割することをお勧めします。
試験勉強の際に試して、上手くいくか確認してみてください。
また、ライティングセクションが一次試験のスコアの三分の一を占めていることを忘れないでください。
ライティングが苦手な場合は、ライティングにもう少し時間を割いてください。

Eiken test level 3 (Speaking test)

When taking the speaking section of the test the questions you will be asked are almost always the same. You will be asked to read a short piece of writing and the question for that is always “Why” so when you read the text find the words “so” or “because” and that is where your answer will be. My students seem to get confused by texts like this. 

In Japan, fish is very popular. It is both healthy and delicious. Fish can be cooked in many ways so it is used by chefs in restaurants.

Q. Why is fish used by chefs in restaurants? 

A few of my students answered this as “because it is healthy and delicious” which is true but the question asks you about why it is used by chefs in restaurants so please be careful to make sure you are answering the right question. “It is both healthy and delicious” has no connection to why chefs use it in restaurants in this text. 

Also, when you are describing the picture you will often be asked about location. Where is the …?  so remember to practice things like on the/ under the/ next to the/ in front of the to make your life easier on test day. 

Congratulations to my guys who passed the level 3 speaking test by the way! I drilled you hard on it so test day seemed like a breeze for you! Well done!

テストでスピーキングを受験する時、出題される質問はだいたい同じです。
短い文章を読むように求められますが、それに対する質問は常に「Why」なので、文章を読むときには「so」または「because」という言葉を見つけてください。答えはそこにあります。
私の生徒さんたちは、このような文章に混乱しているようです。

In Japan, fish is very popular. It is both healthy and delicious. Fish can be cooked in many ways so it is used by chefs in restaurants.
(日本では、魚はとても人気があります。魚はヘルシーで美味しいです。魚はさまざまな方法で調理することができるため、レストランのシェフが魚を使用します。)

問題：Why is fish used by chefs in restaurants?
(なぜレストランのシェフは魚を使用しますか？)

私の生徒さんの何人かはこれを「because it is healthy and delicious（ヘルシーで美味しいから）」と答えました。
それは正しいことですが、問題はレストランのシェフがなぜそれを使用しているのかを尋ねています。
このように、質問に的確に答えているか注意して確認するようにしましょう。
「It is both healthy and delicious」という文の中には、シェフがレストランで魚を使う理由と関係するものは入っていません。

また、写真描写の問題では、場所についてよく尋ねられます。
「Where is the …?（…はどこですか？）」
そのため、テストを楽にするために、下記のフレーズを練習するようにしましょう。

・on the（〜の上に）
・under the（〜の下に）
・next to the（〜の隣に）
・in front of the（〜の前に）

ところで、3級のスピーキング テストに合格した方、おめでとうございます!

Hello there everyone! If you are one of our students who successfully passed the Eiken test in May ( congratulations everyone! ) then you may be taking the speaking test this weekend.You should have already received your scorecard and your second test admission card. On the day of your test please don’t forget to take your admission card, your I.D card from the first test, some form of identification with a photograph on it, and remember to please please switch off your phone before you enter the room! If you didn’t make it this time then the application period for the next test this year is from the 1st of August to the 8th of September.

Hello there everyone. As you know the first Eiken test of this year is coming up in under one month so here is a little advice for the guys studying with us that are taking level 3. Don’t forget that the first section of the test is 50 mins. My advice is to spend about 35-38 mins on the vocab and reading sections and about 12-15 mins on the writing section. This is because the writing section is pretty simple, it only requires a few sentences giving two different reasons to answer a question. It does count for one third of your overall score though so you should take time to check spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and most importantly if you have actually answered the question given to you.

そこで、英検３級に向けて学習している生徒さんたちへ、少しアドバイスがあります。

テストの最初のセクションは50分です。
そのため、リーディングのセクションに約35〜38分、ライティングのセクションに約12〜15分で解くことをおすすめします。
これは、ライティングセクションが非常に単純であり、質問に答えるのに2つの理由を含めるいくつかの文しか必要としないためです。
ただし、全体のスコアの3分の1に相当するため、スペル、句読点、大文字小文字の区別、そして最も重要なこととして、与えられた質問に対して適切に回答したかどうかを確認するために時間をかける必要があります。
